Philippines: Plastic Bottles go Solar | Global 3000

In the Philippines' urban slums, families are unable to afford electricity and often have no access to the grid anyway. But Filipino actor Illac Diaz is looking to change that. With his organization My Shelter Foundation, he's come up with an innovative idea: turning empty plastic bottles into lamps.

Suggestion: don't get stuck in dumb sniping at people who think outside the box. Illac Diaz has devised a wonderful eco friendly solution to the problem of lack of electricity in many regions. He has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands in the developing world. Kids can read and do homework, mothers can cook and do chores, people are safer in their homes, there are far less accidental fires. Hey, sounds good to me. You naysayers - y'all got a better idea?

solving problems themselves with materials at hand = independence and growth and evolution of new ideas...this is how it should be... people solving problems at the micro-level can become a macro-level solution free of giant corporate influence...This is like 150 years ago here, when people were inventing things because they needed to...this is good... this is organic

In my opinion, it doesn't matter who discovered or invented it. What matters most, it is shared to our less fortunate "kababayan" that might help them a little bit on their daily lives on such living condition. I hope our government can do more to improve their situation not only with them in the slums but to all Filipinos. (not mentioning corruption, etc.)

ha ha funny. lets see,, if a five gallon plasticwater jug weights 40-42 lbs, and my roof can support eight roofers at onetime, and each roofer weighs about 190 lbs, uh,, no no if my roof is supporting eight inches of snow and that snow weighs ,,,wait. if my old house has 2x4 rafters 0n 16 " centers, 1/2 inch plywood sheathing and a single layer of 3 tab, what is the safe amount of extra weight i can add to the roof for x number of years before it sags more than it is now and collaspes? gee, i really don't know exactly. i need to get some books on constuction and look up roof load. too bad we don't have a library in town anymore.

you don't live in a shanty with no built to no building regs though and maybe it does not produce that much more light, and the world has way too many of theses bottles. this is part of a solution.

Why don't they use a hole they make for bottles to shine directly from roof without installation of bottles.??
