How To Build a Silent Pellet Trap

Спорт

Quick and simple way to eliminate lead dust indoors while using your pellet gun.
Okay, this is not rocket science, but sometimes simple is not obvious.

I use a cardboard box stuff full of junk mail. It's silent, doesn't fragment pellets, and best of all free. I can check how far the pellets are going, and when it hits about 4 inches from back, I replace worn junk mail with fresh ones. There's never shortage of junk mail!

Similar i cut up all my cardboard boxes into 4x4 ish squares. Fill a large box with the pieces. Hundreds of pellets and never had one make it through.

I used to use a Large tray with 1/4" of lead melted into the bottom of it. When cool stand upright and shoot, the pellets "stick to it" and it is virtually silent. After considerable use just remelt and it reforms again ready for use.

I've been using an electrical box with duct seal on the back (vertical) surface for years, and it works very well. I use a tweezers to pull the pellets from the duct seal and then smash the duct seal down with my hands and it's ready to go again. I don't shoot high power guns into the trap. You have to keep an eye on duct seal and move the target around so you don't blow a hole in the seal and start having results you don't like.

another product i use is wall tack, its that blue or yellow stuff for hanging posters found at any hardware store, a golf ball size can take a 30 ft/lbs pellet hit from a 25 cal air riffle, but this stuff is for maybe small wood box traps because price is higher, but good thing is its not as sticky as duct seal and easy to take off and recover pellets

Interesting, I have been considering building a Steel Trap like that. And, have experience .25 cal pellets from my Marauder nearly turning into powder when hitting steel at close range. I have mulled over using an absorbing wall prior to the Steel Backdrop. I like your suggestions, thanks for your Post. I also noticed an image in the Background CG-57 and had to back it up several times to be certain that what I thought I saw, was in fact the Hull Number for a US Navy Cruiser. I notice things like that, I am a former US Navy Sailor from the early 70's. I was in Amphibious Expeditionary Task Force 76 aboard the Flag Ship USS Denver for three years including the 1975 Vietnam Evacuation of Saigon....... Operation Frequent Wind. Don

I see a video here on youtube "Best Way to Set-up Air Rifle Indoor Range? : Round Table " where they suggested a setup just like this, except they also spread out a layer of some sand on the bottom. So duct seal on back like this video and then an inch of sand on the bottom. You can buy large bags of sand cheap at lowes if your local dirt isn't sandy.

Although you would think Duct Seal would be in the heating and ventilating department (DUCT seal, duh) it is not. The people in that dept at Home Depot did not know what I was talking about either. I had to take the info from the HD web site (Model # DS-110, Store SKU # 593567) to the store where I found that it is actually stocked in the ELECTRICAL department at Home Depot. It is used to seal openings around conduit and wire penetrations through walls, etc. My local HD had lots of it in stock.

I tried a similar trap and those same duct seal packets. When the weather turned cooler, the duct seal started to slump and detach from the back of the sloped back plate of the trap. I haven't found a solution. I may switch to the rubber mulch type of storage bin trap.

Get the metal Trap. But what I do is go to Home Depot. Buy a role of Screen mesh you use to redo your screens in your windows. Get the heaviest one you can buy. I forgot which I buy. But it's the strongest one. Also get the Styrofoam 1 inch think isolation. They sell them I think 2'X2'. Cut the screen mesh into squares. Do layers of the screen mesh. But also cut them in different angles so that nothing (holes) matches up. Cut Styrofoam as well. Than put the Styrofoam behind your creative Screen mesh. Attach however you wish in your project. Just put the layers of screen mesh in front of the Styrofoam. The screen mesh layers acts similar to Kevlar. It slows down the pellet, BB or Airsoft BB.(those airsoft bounce off)..And the foam catches what goes through. Also, a role of Roofing flashing can work the same way as the screen mesh. And cheaper.

How long did it take for the PCP to shred that putty stuff? My .22 in 44 ft/lb (Walther MaximaThor) would blow a 1 1/2 inch hole into that stuff - with one shot. Putting ten on target and you´re gonna breathe duct seal particulate matter and have to renew it,, I suppose.

Just use that small brown bowx you have, buy a 200 sheet pack of lined paper (looseleaf) 99 cents and fold it in half then stick it in the box, the pellet is completely silent when it hits, the pellet deforms but doesnt brake apart and leave small airborn pieces.

Wow, so many comments on one man’s method for controlling the lead fragments in this bullet/pellet trap! As Clark G said “With a good airplane, you can fly into Reno from anywhere”. One man’s roof is another man’s floor... . There may be “better” ways to contain, control pellet particles, but this looks like a method that will work. Heavy, yes, expensive... ? well, having health issues from lead poisoning or something like that could be way more costly. Me ? I’m shooting into a small shop vac turned on it’s side into the opening filled with old bath towels. It works, but not a solution that works really well (hard to attach a target) I’m going to upgrade to a similar “bullet” trap that cost less, you bolt it together (instead of it being welded together like the Champion model) I’m going to hang cloth, towels, or old denim jean material across the back a few inches behind where the targets are attached in the front. 3-5 layers of material might be enough to slow it down, and/or stop the pellets so they don’t break apart. The bigger concern is the surrounding area behind and to the sides of the trap. Already put two holes in closet door - one penetrated completely, the other didn’t go through all the way. Misses happen, but until I come up with a solution for a proper backstop, I’m not shooting CO2 pellet pistol inside. Thinking of polycarbonate sheet (Lexan) but the bigger and thicker is not an inexpensive proposition... how thick does Lexan have to be to stop a .177 cal. pellet @max 430 ish FPS?

I watched this video, and *still* forgot to put on some latex/vinyl gloves before getting my hands sticky with this stuff. Nothing worked at first to clean it off: soap, iso alcohol, nope. Then I put 3 drops of Goo-Gone on my palm, rubbed them together over the sink, and BAM. It completely dissolves the goo off your hands. Remember that when you do this. Goo-Gone... (I still don't know what they put in that stuff. Eucalyptus oil, petroleum solvents? Something like that)

A pellet trap isn't for keeping the pellets. It's for "trapping" them from ricocheting or otherwise going somewhere you don't want. This particular trap is meant for .22 rimfire. Your cooler idea might be cheaper upfront, but you'll have to keep replacing the paper and eventually the cooler. I've had this exact trap for about 5 years and it's still working like a champ.
