True love it too
I built a very similar pen based off your pen. I used plank board on the inside of the post and hog panel inside of the plank boards. Really like your videos.i also put metal on the sides and it covered the same area as my roof.
Cleanest pen and pigs I’ve ever seen lol
I appreciate your teachings...we are getting ready to build a pen and this is the design we will use. Thank you for sharing.
Nice pen, great information. Thank you for the video, keep up the solid work!
it is so good that I can not even believe it. you are so good that it just blew my mind you guys are so good. you guys are so amazing and truly fantastic and fun.
As a fellow hog farmer, I appreciate your design. I'm going to incorporate some of your ideas in my birthing pens. Recently moving to the Southeast, I realize I have to change my concepts I had in CA. I will still keep them in soil pen areas, but shelters and birthing pens must be on concrete.
I'm about to build one just like yours. Exactly what I want.
Love this set up ! Love your videos and everything you show us!! I am going to be giving this a try this year! Thanks again for a great job !
It's truly encouraging.
Thank you for sharing your great video....
Nice work, I will design something similar in the future although I question the use of a concrete floor. Do you let them out to mud bath and forage or do you keep them penned up for the most part? I would prefer to have a dirt floor although I know that makes clean up 50% harder.
How about a follow up Video on how your own is holding up. Well done
Nice pen area. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching!
Pretty cool. Is it possible to have parallelogram design fencing of this size hole?
Think the concept is what is demonstrated so individuals can customise.
I think if we keep/nailed the fence inside it will become more lasting even though the space will become a little less for them.. Anyways the concrete floor is done like a step right..? to avoid them slipping ..
iwould like to say thank you for giving me this wonderful idea I didn't know what I was going to do for the pics that I was going to get I have 40 acres of land and I just didn't know how I was going to start with my pigs now you gave me an idea for a feeding station thank you for the idea
Thank you
Love this setup, I built one very similar to this by watching your video.
I have pigs...couple suggestions...#1Pen is nice but they will start having hip issues if on pad long. I prefer dirt. #2 pig nipple needs be attached with galvanized pipe not pic, plus water cut off in ground to fix and freezing weather.

Greg Roberts by the time these pigs will have hip issues they will be in the freezer. And as far at the water goes I don’t believe has pigs in the winter.
Do they stay in there all the time or do you let them out into the yard?
This looks good but for the pigs they hate it, they will freeze so much, need a proper wind break or place for them to sleep

He buy's them in the spring they weigh about 30 pounds or so !!! He then fattens them up in 4 months then they are slaughtered for meat !!! So even if he started in late spring by the end of August they are already in the freezer and being eaten !!! This pen is for short term only !!!

You might want to put the hog panels to the inside of the post
Looks like it might be hard on their feet? Definitely easier.
How do pigs respond to bad weather? Like thunder and lightning?
Thank you very much for this great idea. But, one thing I want to know will it be possible or comfortable for the pigs to stay openly like this during winter?
@dontfit6380

Absolutely not this isn’t acceptable there’s no place for them to get out of the weather. I’ve worked at massive hog confinement’s and the pigs are much better taken care of. There’s too many pigs for the small area with no entertainment pigs are the smartest domesticated animal they are smarter then a 3 year old imagine putting four 3 year olds in that little pen with nothing to do. Miserable!

You could add plywood around the three sides under where the roof is and add bedding and they should be fine

I’m assuming these pigs will be processed before winter.
Hey mate, just a question what's the weather like where you are? Does the pigs sleep exposed to the weather? I'm from nz and thinking of starting a small scale pig farm. Advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Howdy! The climate here is mild for most of the year. We live in the southern part of the U.S. so Our winters are not very harsh. But you can certainly raise them in colder climates too, but will need to offer them some ort of shelter with a bedding like straw for example. Good luck on your farm. Wish you great success.

We have coyote's. Has anybody had issues with coyote's? Do they even bother pigs? What could you add to this pen to protect them from predators?
Enjoyed the video. Would like to know how the meat turned out on the feed you fed them?

Meat was great. We also feed them scraps as much as possible when we had it. The more variety you can give them, the better the meat will taste in my opinion.

I have heard that some types of hogs have a better taste. I want to try and find the best. I only plan on putting up one hog and probably little late this year put if nothing down happen might try one in the spring. Thank you for your response.
Noticed they are on concrete. Is that better than dirt? How is the mess with their urine and poop?
The hog panels are on the wrong side of the posts.!

That was the way I wanted it to give them more room, 4 inches all the way around. There are plenty of fencing u-nail to hold it place. That's not a mistake. Thanks for the comment.
No drainage or sewerage? im from ph and my grandfather has piggry and i knw when you have pigs u need sewerage for there waste and for smelly poop..
Like it . Try giving the pigs some mineral salt
How big is this pen? Thank you! Looks great!

It is 16' x 8' The long side is an entire hog panel which is 16' and for the shorter ends I cut a 16' hog panel in half, so those are 8'

@AJ-ox8xy

I assume he either cleans it daily or weekly and uses it for compost or just disposes it some how. Something I do is use it for compost. Make sure to throw in some of your native dirt and untreated sawdust/ wood chips over everything after you put it in and that cuts the smell to basically nothing, plus gives you some excellent mulch to grow quality crops over the planting season.
@figgawhoable

I mix mine with the wood shaving bedding from my chicken coop. Makes for great compost.
And what are the floor dimensions?
You mind sharing what you do with all the waste? How often do you clean the pen?
@ShrimpOutdoors
5 ай бұрын
Clean as needed depending on number and size of pigs. We simply scoop the waste in a wheel barrow, and dump it in the garden area and simply take dirt next to the dump site and cover it up. Never had a smell problem at ALL!
how old are the pigs in the pen?
If you did it over again, would you put hog panels on the inside of posts? And what else would you do different?
@joshuagarner6981

Yes because it is the only correct way to build a fence!
Farmer/Butcher from Haiti. That's not a bad pen, but you must thing of managing the wast now you only have 4 pigs to take care of so its no big deal but something you should think about.
How many months those pigs?
Apologies if i missed it, but how many pigs can you keep in there at once?
@ShrimpOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
I had up to 4 at once, and I would say that would be the max limit I would put that space.
An you an all so pot zink on the border to keep the water off, cut it to fit around bord
Nex time you can put the mesh on the inside, so when they push on it, it will stay up

Seems rather small for four pigs. I thought the minimum recommended space was 80 sq ft per hog.

Kaylee Shares this is like confined hog farms, concrete floor is hard on their feet. Not sure it's entitled organic ?
@LionsLamb79
4 жыл бұрын
by definition it is "organic" he's not feeding them any GMO feed and not giving them hormones or other injections to fatten them up. sure it's not ideal "dirty pig" conditions but it's still way better than industrial pig farming, at least they're outside. not everyone has the space or ability to pasture raise pigs but some people would say " then you shouldn't raise pigs" to that person I say, lot's of people have children because they want them but fail to provide stellar or even ideal conditions for the child to grow up. just saying. those pigs are loved and provided for, maybe a little cramped but he obviously cares enough for them to hose their shit out everyday, I've heard of parents who let their babies sit in shitty diapers till they get rash and infections.
I thought pigs liked mud? Concrete pad is definitely cleaner but seems unnatural?
@ShrimpOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Yes, pig do love mud and to naturally forage. However, since we did not have the space, a pen like this works great. They were only in the pen for about 4 months, before going to the processor.
How did you deal with the waste and smell
@ShrimpOutdoors
Жыл бұрын
Shoveled the solids in a wheel barrow, and dumped it in my garden and simply threw dirt over it with a shovel. No smell at all. Then rinsed the pen with a water hose.

Pigs eat wood
Not so good design too wet around pen, swampy for pest and mosquitos to breed.
I don’t know what state you are in but to be certified organic in Ohio you can’t use or expose your animals to treated lumber
Those hogs will rip those u nails out. Better two double up some tie wire.

what is the point of this? you don’t have to eat pigs...and they don’t want to die...what a waste
@aus71383

Pigs exist because they were domesticated as a source of meat. If you don't raise them as meat, they don't have a reason to exist. If you release them into the wild, they will destroy farm land. So....if you don't want to eat pigs, don't. But if you do, then you are part of the reason why pigs exist. If it weren't for people eating pork, pigs would cease to exist.
