He couldn’t Believe this tiny PIG PEN Didn't Stink

Visitor thought this tiny Pig Pin would stink, then he quickly changed his mind once he Got close enough to smell. I showed him the secret… Wood Chips. But, we’ve got to do a better job of keeping them dry, so we’re reworking the PigPort design to help make that happen. Check out Ken’s Channel (Island Homesteader): bit.ly/IslandHomesteader

Thank you Justin, loved the video, but I definitely liked spending the time with you guys the most! Chores were fun, even the work you "made" me do (ha ha!) and Madison really had a good time as well, and that is saying a lot from a teenager who is not at all used to doing chores like that! Jonah is by far the hardest working 11 year old I have ever known - that boy is a beast! Can't wait to see you guys again.

You would not *believe* the number of times friends of mine have commented that, "Oh, well all farms stink." This idea that someone can start and hold a farm steady without it smelling bad is a revelation to them--usually as I start explaining intensive grazing or grass based farming they either somehow connect it back to industrial farming or zone out: educating the consumer and future farmers is the next step, I feel, to a Stewardship Farm backed America.

My dad had a concrete feeding floor where our pigs were. It smelled and every so often we had to scrape off the dried manure and bedding, scraping the slop. Your way is so so so much better than concrete. The flies were terrible.

I can promise you that we didn't stage any of that for the video - there was absolutely no smell, my daughter even commented on that, and I didn't see a single fly!! This is a truly revolutionary way to be able to keep pigs in a small space.

It depends on the farm. Here, we accept volunteers upon request. We might get one every other week for three hours. We as a family put in about 25 hours a week.
