How to build a metal high top on a van - DIY

Whether you'd like a walk-in closet for your weekend glamping trips, a dance club on wheels , or getting ready for the apocalypse, a high top van will maximize your space while giving you the ability to stand. I made this high top out of 22 gauge sheet metal and 16 gauge 1" x 1.5" steel tubing in December 2020. It was my first welding job and a damn good one if you ask me, "Welders" feel free to leave my score in the comments below. After driving around an old 95' Dodge Ram 3500 extended van with the top cut off in Los Angeles for a year, it was time. No more beautiful palm trees, getting my stereo stolen, or the occasional fast food drink thrown in by my favorite road rager. This van needs a top, this van needs a top now!

What do you think, it is possible to use spare van and cut off 3feet from him to make extension

Good looking shop, hey do you think this van will be kinda top-heavy?

  • @palemoonart

Good question! The existing roof weighed about 200 pounds. This roof weighs around 425 pounds. I believe the little bit of extra weight still makes it safe, and the tapered sides may help shift the weight to the center of the van.

I haven't noticed much change in the handling except when driving through desert high winds! I have been weaving through Los Angeles traffic for the last 2 years with no problems at all. I'd say the biggest issue is not being able to drive into parking garages. Lol

Do you think someone could build a hightop with wood❔

  • @palemoonart

You can totally build a van top out of wood. I would construct it similar to old-school wooden planes. Thin ribs and lots of glue to keep the weight down.

Hi, I would charge $3000 for labor + materials. At the time, materials cost around $500. Somewhere between $3500 - $4000 total
