Gonna be honest I didn't expect such a good video from a dude in flip flops and capris but I'll be bookmarking this for my future lean to project because there's a lot of good info to take in and I'll need to watch it more than once.

Great work man. Looks great. I love seeing how you interact with your employees. I’m so used to seeing the boss yelling and cursing at his employees. You speak to them calm and with respect and did a heck of a job. Keep up the good work. Love the video.

This is the kind of video I wish I could find all the time. When I thought "I wonder what it takes to build a lean-to onto my shop" and find a video of this quality. Perfect length, perfectly explained, great quality. No life story, no long dumb introduction, just the good stuff. Thanks!

Great instructional step by step with material list! It might be a good idea to fill the holes in the ground with a layer of large gravel rocks so the posts can shed any water that can accumulate in the posts over the years and cause rotten posts. I built huge deck when I was 22 and thanks to Bob Villa lol... showing this method, it still stands today and I'm 58. No rotten posts. This is the best video out there today sir. Thank you!
How did you attach the ledger board. Im wanting to install a lean to on my building. The frame of my building is 2 ¹/² " square tubing. Im unsure on the best was to tie into it. My tin on the side wall is running horizontal like this one.
Great video! Definitely saving this one for my summer project.

Thank you Chris for watching and commenting!!! when i started this company i wanted to do things a little differently than how i was done by other bosses. that was to include pay,saying thank you for their time away from their families and vactaion pay(which is un heard of for construction workers where im from). i think we are accomplishing those things and thats why i have such good people working with me. One of the hardest things to do we've dicovered is being a consistent part of all the crews day each day as we grow. Filming a complete video without interference is also super hard. I do love building and actually being with the guys lets them know that i know what they go through and lets us connect on a level much more personal than if you are making money or not! Hopefully we can continue to grow in experience and execution to bring quality videos on a regular schedule. Thanks again for watching

1:30 Are the 4x4s the only lumber that needs to be treated?
I’m thinking about doing this above my deck and was curious if it’s loud underneath the metal roof and if so what can I do to lessen the sound? Best video I’ve seen on a lean to. Great freakin job man.

One more question. Do you recommend some type of moisture tape when attaching a lean to roof to the shed? I'll be using treated 4x4 post that will run along side the shed as close as i can get them. I am wondering about putting moisture construction tape in between the post and the shed? Also, would I be better off having a metal roof with just framed in roof or using OSB and putting shingles? On the other roof I recently built I used plywood and shingled the roof. I am wondering which is more cost effective? I'm also thinking just putting up a metal roof will cut down on the amount of time
Great video you’re gonna blow up
WOW!! I love videos like this and have not seen one give so much explanation of details. Wonderful!!! I am wanting to do something on a little smaller scale to the side of my house...one story, asbestos roofing. My question is...should the pitch of the lean-to be equal to the pitch of the roof in order for water run-off from the roof to not wash backwards onto the wall of the house during a downpour if the lean-to roof pitch is too shallow? That was pretty horrible stated and hope you can decipher what in the world I just asked. Thanks so much. Jesus bless.
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
thank you for watching Miss Sandra!!!! you do not have to make your new roof the same pitch as the house. You pitch should ideally be steeper than 12 degrees. A 4/12 pitch which is close to 19 degrees is required if using asphalt shingles. As far as the blowing rain, there is a way to cut Z flashing against the existing structure along with silicone that will protect you from blowing rain!!!
It’s best to stack all sheets together on saw horses . Measure your screw hole marks and pre drill all sheets in one pass together . Your screw holes will always line up this way and be perfectly uniform once installed
I'm trying to decide between doing a lean to like this or having a separate structure built. What was your cost on materials for this?
I got a build for ya. Tri-level home’s basement side door (sub level) with concrete exterior staircase. I’m building a lean-to greenhouse to cover and enclose the staircase. I like to see your take on it. Good video.
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
my mom lives in a house with that exact scenario! and the drain is in the center at the bottom of the stairs. i think thats a great idea, you'll be rerouting the rain entirely and not even letting it get to that area.. As a matter of fact the house we built the lean-to on has that situation as well. except its not a tri-level home. i built a roof over that for him when i built his addition! I'll see if i can show it to you! thanks for watching and commenting as well!!!
Great job easy to follow step by step and well detailed instructions

How does one match what you built here but on a higher barn? The client only wants it half of the hiegh of the existing barn. How do i flash the ledger board to prevent wayer from running down the walls to the interior? This eill be installed onto western metal ehich has a higjer rib than standard pro rib metal. Also, do i install a double ledger, one on the interior and one on the exterior? Last question, where you bird mouth notched your rafters, can one skip the notching and make the end of the rafter where it meets the beam board flush at the top and still have an effective install? Thank you for the awesome video. Well wxecuted and explained Honestly, probably the best i have ever seen!

Rockin the flippy floppy’s, safety first lol
Great video!! Thanks for sharing. Is there a certain pitch or angle that the lean to has to have?? The ledger board is higher up than the exterior braces. How do you figure that height?? Sorry for the question, but I don't know how that part works when building one of these.
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
Thank you Coplock for watching!!! And for the comment. I would recommend at least a 12°-15° pitch. That would also depend on where you live as well. As far as beam height relative to the ledger can be seen by using a line level,a level with a straight board the length of the building or a transom. Ideally you would have 3inches of fall per foot of length. You can work from the beam or the legder whichever of the two you are most confident in, install that first. If you install the ledger first, multiply 3 inches times the length of the span. So let's say your span is 12 feet long. You would then hook the top of the ledger and mark down 36" and place a nail or screw or a mark with your pencil is fine as well. Then from that mark use a string line or chalk line with a three inch line level attached to it from your mark towards the posts. Pull the line tight and mark one post when the level is centered. From there you can then run the same line level from that post to the other posts. That mark would then be the top of your beam minus the thickness of your rafter. So if your rafter was a 2x6 you would subtract and additional 5 inches or 4 1/2 (to leave a nice bird's mouth). And then make your notches for you beam from there downwards..... If you have your beam set first because thats more comfortable for you, then run a stringline towards the building from the top of your beam and when level place a mark on the existing structure.from there measure upwards the 36 inches plus the thickness of you rafter and mark that as the top of you ledger, and pop a line across the direction of your ledger. Sorry for the long response but im glad you asked, thats what we are here for!!! If you have any more queztions feel free to ask anytime. Thank you for taking your time to write us. Make sure to check oit our DIY deck video and DIY ceramic tile as well. Have a great day sir!!!
Great video! You explain it so well. How deep did you set the posts? Do you prefer dry concrete mix, then add water, or mix then pour?
@heymakerphd1982
Жыл бұрын
I'm curious, how do you keep yellowjackets from building nests under the original eaves and the new roof? How long does it take for the concrete mix to be totally activated?
@firstnforemost7283
11 ай бұрын
thanks Don! 1. we set the posts 24 inches deep. 2. i prefer mixed concrete if strength is my main priority, however dry packed is easier and all that was necessary for this job!!! @heymaker thanks for the comment and questions!!! 1. bees and wasps are definitely a battle, especially where a building is barely used. but the best way is to completely close off the fascia. i actually did a newsletter on this exact problem that goes up on my community tab this friday the 9th of june 2. the concrete will be cured in approximately 24 hours
what methods are used to set the height of the 6x6 post. Or should i ask how to know at what depth to make the hole
I'm getting ready to do this on my pole barn. Question: What do you do when the steel siding is oriented the other direction (ribs vertical)? I was thinking of using 3/4 plywood spacers between the ribs to set the ledger on top of the ribs so there's no gap.
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
Thank you, sir!!! Yes, I would fill in between the ribs to prevent bending the current sheets inwards for sure. Thank you for watching. And if you run into any trouble during your build feel free to reach out i would love to see photos too!!!

I've started my Lean To addition, 15 x 30, to my existing pole barn. I'm using spacers, as you mentioned, and my ledger board is bolted to the existing 6"x6" barn posts while using lag bolts between the post. (so far, so good)
It will never pass inspection in Canada you have to add 2. Pieces of 2x6 post against the wall to carry the load and four 1 inch thread rods with nuts between the 2x8 and wall
Got to ask at the middle 6x6 post. Why does it look like only one of the 2x8's is bolted and not the otherside? That's my only question because I'm building one myself and your video is so far the best video to watch and learn
Just subscribe to you You did a nice job on that Enjoy it and I'll be watching more have a good and safe day

The flip flops are killing me 😂
Wouldn't it be better to put the post on concrete blocks instead burying them in the ground to prevent the wood from rotting? Nice video btw.
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
yes it definitely would be better. i built this lean-to for a builder i work for and he couldnt decide on what type of floor he was going to lay i.e stamped concrete or pavers. so he told me to do it as i did!!! ideally a metal bracket attached to concrete or anything keeping the post at least 1 in above the surface would be great!
Great video! Wish I could find lumber that looked that good around me! Did you only put two screws per metal stud for the ledger board? What do you mean "screw on both sides of the ledger break? I thought I should drill and bolt the ledger threw each metal stud but rather not! I'm building 50'x12'
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Ed! yes i did add two screws per metal stud. the ledger break was the 2x6 against the existing metal building. The studs on the metal building were 2 1/2" wide, so i marked 1 1/4" to find the center of the stud, and cut the board to that mark. then continued to the end with the next piece. Being that the both boards now "shared" the stud and the joint it allowed me two install two screws into the same stud and thus supporting where the first ledger stopped and the second ledger started. A 50'x12' building is big building, if you have any questions during your build feel free to send an email with pictures and I'd be glad to help at anytime!!!!
I’m building a roof of the shed like you are, but it’s for a chicken run. Now I planned on taking it from the shed and attaching it to the privacy fence instead of installing post like you did. Our shed is a big shed that anchored with large augers, the kind you might find single or double wide trailers. Now is that a bad idea, should I run a couple of post up against the fence to where the roof isn’t attached to the fence?
@firstnforemost7283
10 ай бұрын
great question!! depending on the spacing between the posts of your fence, you may be able install a beam from post to post on your existing fence that could suffice just fine. these typs of roof designs with metal panels have a very low weight per sq. foot . thank you for the comment and for watching!!! have a great day.

My father in law had a concrete business that all he could find to work was Mexicans… he taught them the trade, then they left and started competing against him on bids😂. @firstnforemost7283

This guy wanted a real flat roof because thats where he plans to hang deer for skinning and park his side-by-side. ideally you would need a pitch of atleast 15 degrees.
That wood beam should be insulated with some old oil at least... It will be rooten...
Step one: hire a construction crew.
Great info and video!! Let me ask instead of pouring concrete around the 6x6 post could not just dig a two by two foot by 2 ft hole. Fill it full of concrete and then put the post on top of it after the concrete drys? That away the concrete don't eat the post away?
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely you can, you could also wrap the post in vynil at the bottom and the concrete will not eat through the vynil. Thank you for watching!!!!
I like the video I do a lot of this work but was seeing if there was new or different ways of doing this for at home but man… put some shoes/boots on 😂 I almost couldn’t keep watching seeing those Sandals lol
Nice video, but why have an entire team, and use so much material just to build such a simple shed? To me 2 to 3 persons was enough to build this.
What screws did you use going into the ledger and how do you know what to go into?
I need to build something like this over my patio and deck that run together but I need to attach from the slope side, only have 8' in height to the overhang and told I need to go up on the roof and attach above the outside wall to make sure I have enough room for the proper slop and plenty of head room on the outside beam. Going out 20' running 50'. Any insight would be appreciated!
@firstnforemost7283
Жыл бұрын
You were told correctly. Going up the roof a little ways will provide you with a better slope while being able to raise the beam up high enough to not feel crowded. being that you are going 20' out i would recommend you go 6 feet up the roof to get at least a 3/12 pitch. you will have to flash the gables to ensure no water enters but i think you will appreciate the look you end up with. if you want send me some pictures of your area or any questions and I'll do what i can to help. Ask anything at all, I'd be glad to help!!! we are on facebook as well @firstnforemost and my email is firstnforemost2022@gmail.com. Thank you for watching

great question and thank you for watching. the metal roof panels were purchased at a local hardware store and are consistent in thickness with normal building materials if not thicker than most metal roofing on new residential homes in my area. Being that you have expected snow load i would pour concrete footings to about 4 inches above ground and "beef" up the sub-frame of the roof to help with the potential load. the metal will withstand the snow load but a subframe built at 16" on center with 2 foot on center spacing on perlin blocking will give you all the strength you need to build a long lasting lean-to, even in New Jersey!!!!
Thanks for great video as I plan to do the same thing for my carport. Please help me to calculate the tilt of the carport's roof, I need it has tilt of 28 degree with the high end is 8 feet high so what is the height of lower end to get 28 degree tilt with the 7"6' span between the posts. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Glad it helped, thank you for watching!!
Thanks for showing the video. I see that you screwed the header over the metal in the outside. It will be difficult down the road to remove in case of damage, or putting in a window or door. I have this same issue, so I’ll be cutting the metal and adding flashing for rain and moisture.

@@firstnforemost7283 Excellent video, detail, and interaction with the guys! My question or concern is also with attaching the ledger board to the exterior metal of the existing structure. Is there any concern about moisture getting trapped or getting into the existing structure? I live in the upper mid-west with rain, snow, and all sorts of freezing moisture, is there a need to somehow seal between the ledger board and the exterior siding of the existing structure? Thank You!
Bushradical is pretty good for idea's.
