    We are going to be doing the same, but only one kiddo. We do not know anyone else who has done this. A bit of a lonely process along with all the sideways glances when you announce your plans. It can be done, that I know from all I've read and watched. Good on you Bella.

    You guys are smart with your money. I knew a person that lived in their car for a bit because they had goals to not be a victim of debt. I've learned you don't have to live they way people expect you to, just do you and they will see your great success. I think these are wonderful ideas.

    I bought a reefer and started to convert it into a living space. I moved onto the property with my stuff in it and built a small porch, put in a door with a couple windows and the wood stove. Instant house. Insulated better than most homes. I'm now living in it and working on the cabin. I will be using this space as a office or what ever later, it's paid for. But it works. I totally understand and appreciate what you are saying.

    I honestly know someone who had four kids too. started off camping in a RV put up four walls then a roof. a year later had a 2 bedroom 1 bath home on a big plot of land. waited 5 years and started a 2nd home ....4 bedroom 2 bath ...then rented the old place. then started a 3 level house in 86 and had it done in 2 yrs. basically used the money from renting out other places and let people rent out lots for there trailers till they had the house done. this man was 37 when he started . now he is well into his 70's kids are grown has great grand kids and still is living debt free cause he paid cash for it all .I also should state he has a 6th grade education. worked hard at life and what he didnt know he read and just did it. One of my personal hero's. I find it funny when someone whines to him about money and cost of things that they cant afford. He says comfortable costs but work dont. I got hammers I got tools whatever you need I got. you get the land and the permits. The rest is just funding for building materials. Im also proud to say that man is my kids great grandfather and he too has took to him and showed him the ways of earning your keep and keeping cost down. My son is nine and has more knowledge then I did at his age. Reading tape measures and running equipment . He has even rebuilt a motor to his go kart. with the help of grandpa....Still I will give up my comfort to avoid the costs of paying someone elses backbreaking work if I can do it myself and avoid debt

    That's the difference between our generation and older compared to gen X, Y & Z is that the latter want it all now and brand new. My first house was a one bedroom converted shed that I extended too three times as an owner builder as money allowed and needs arose. That was the first and only mortgage and paid out in five years and every house since i have purchased outright. But I do admit the younger generation have got a greater challenge. Governments are allowing jobs to go off shore all too soon and only look after their own selfish interest, cost of education is ridiculously expensive putting the young at a disadvantage and again the fault of politicians past and present. As I grew up education and health where free or at least only required minimal personal contribution and jobs were plentiful but it all started changing in the 80's.

Currently we are at a near by camp ground due to not having utilities yet. I’m 43 and plan on being debt free in couple yrs. I plan to sell off my home remodeling business to my younger partner and enjoy my kids growing up . It’s tuff and hard to get there but can be done .

    Parker Jones, You are so right! I often see life through a lens. Using these words: "Pay now and play later, or, play now and pay later" I calibrate my next moves! I might even say that I have taught myself to have good habits by the way I choose to frame things: That tall glass of bourbon on ice that once seemed wonderful now looks like pain instead. I've redefined 'comfort' in order to get the things that bring real and lasting pleasure to me and my wife. Houses, real estate in general (outside of family, health, etc) are the only thing I seek and develop for wealth.

    Kevin, Just today I found this 'single' video of yours above and I enjoyed listening to you tell your story. It seems that the key thing that's required, more than any other one particular thing, is a change in one's thinking. Too many people it seems think that they cannot do something and so they close their mind instead of saying something like, "I don't know how to do this right NOW but I am going to find a way, learning bit by bit from many different sources". Thanks for making this and sharing it. You are likely building your own 'little' industry. I highly admire the common sense approach that you and your wife have combined with the work you guys put out. As I write to you here (October 2017) I fear that the future is going to be terribly rough for folks who cannot figure out how to get things done with whatever resources they have. Take care. See you out there.

    2 years ago we cashed out hubs' 401k after hubs' longtime employer laid him off, and bought land. We'd planned to sell the old house, but ended up foreclosing because we couldn't find a buyer in time. We have spent the last 2 years in 6 different friend's homes while we try to work (and change jobs every time we move) and save to get the new house built, with 7 kiddos in tow. We have only now gotten enough savings to begin construction, and it was because of inheritances and tax refunds! With this many children, we were told it had to be finished to a certain point to be able to sleep in it, and once we start building, we will have no back up place to live, so we needed enough lump cash to get to that nearly-done point before winter. We are persistent, though. We are headed to the property to start this summer, and plan to work as hard as we can before winter. Fingers crossed we make it, or we'll be sleeping in tents in 3 feet of snow!

And I’m getting my own project on the way now and I’m doing it in stages like yourself. One question that I had is did you have any problems or restrictions on how long you could live in your camper in your state on your lot ?

    The area I live in does not allow R.V. living. That being said it is complaint drivin so they only inforce if someone complains. But with a building permit I can live in an R.V. onsite while building. We did for a 2 1/2 years before moving into the house.

  • @LetscampingwithTara
    @LetscampingwithTara4 жыл бұрын

    question do we need a LISENSED contractor and inspector etc if we build our new little house if we build our house our self? another thing it's a growing trend for counties to restrict living in RV'S! 2 weeks every 6 months so if you plan on living in one while you build make sure you have it built in 2 weeks or face a hefty fine and cabins are also considered RV'S or camping so check with the county so you won't buy land where they do that .

  • @KevinCoyaselfreliantlife

    @KevinCoyaselfreliantlife

    4 жыл бұрын

    You will need to check with the building department in the area you want to build. I was legally allowed to build my own house without a contractors license. I was also allowed to live in my RV for up to two years on site during construction as long as I had a building permit. Normally no RV living in my area. And no I won't build in an area where I can't do that.

    Again here in CA one can only stay in an RV for up to 120 days a year on ones property, so the build would have to be completed with in 4 months. Ca doesn't seem to make things very easy to live cheaply. BTW what are those measurements drawn on outside of house there?(Must have missed that video.) If recall correctly you are also a general contractor as well, so ya that better "qualifies" you to build your own home in city inspectors eye than the most of us who have just a passion and book knowledge. They don't let just anyone throw a hammer around. Thx Kevin for the video, hope, and insight!

    Hi Allen, That's very exciting! so start with picking your building site. In doing so take into consideration how you will bring water power and sewer to that site as well as a driveway. Then prep the site for your foundation. You may want to hire someone to do some of these things. water power and sewer (septic) need to be roughed into the foundation at this time before concrete. Be sure to consider orientation to southern exposure as well.

    I sent you guys an email over a month ago and have yet to get a response. Your vids, one, in particular, was geared toward "encouraging people." My email asked for nothing but a few words of encouragement. A short email in reply would have been great. Given how nice you guys seem I'm just wondering if somehow my email got overlooked. You provided your email on the blog for a reason I thought so I hope it was ok to email you. Just curious as to what happened to it. On a different note....I'm glad you clarified the fact that you do not include your lot cost (which in your beach area is astronomical) in your $30k build estimate. Thanks for making that clear.

    Hi Wayne,Not sure what happened but I hope you are doing ok. As far as lot prices here they are all over the place price wise. You can start a $7k and go up to $100k and more. I would not include the lot because you can find a lot in your area to fit your budget. Thanks for watching.

    I have a program you can buy that goes into great detail about buying property and developing it (clearing ,water,power and sewer)and the process of building your own house.And I also have a series of videos here that show the progress as well.
