How to Build a HOME POWER RACK | CHEAP HOMEMADE SQUAT RACK FROM WOOD | DIY

Hello and welcome to the channel! We've been had two national lock downs in the UK this year which includes the gyms. The first lasted 4/5 months and we've just come out of the second which was throughout November. I thought that if this is the new normal then I needed a piece of equipment that I could train on and this was the result.
Shout out the The Buff Dude Video that I followed. Very happy with how it turned out, the link to their video is below:

    Great result man. When you were connecting the cross members you asked how to make it easier to square the beam and screw it in without having a helper to hold it together, best way I found was to use ratchet straps to tighten the frame around the crossmember, and it will keep everything upright and away from windows haha

    Nice build. I've been contemplating building something at my house. I would suggest you pick up the gas line pipes for the safety. It looks like you have the much thinner electrical conduit pipes that will bend very easily. Personally, I will likely add rebar into the gas pipe for additional support in the chance that I have to drop the bar.

    Thanks Joe. It’s a good design if you’re thinking of doing it. Bit bigger than I expected though I have to admit. Yes completely agree. I test them out and realised they weren’t strong enough when loading a lot of weight. Looking at getting some pipe!

    That tri-fluted bit is aggressive. I actually wound up buying two because one of them caught a knot in the wood and bent the bit. I’d also suggest a powerful drill. I initially was using a 5 amp drill and it did nothing but bog down on each hole. A complete pain! I bought a 10 amp drill on Amazon and it plows through the wood almost instantaneously. Also, for others watching, mark where your holes are going, then use a a screw or punch to start a small hole. This way the bit doesn’t dance around on you 👍

  • @JoshMcCallion

    Yeah the fluted bit really did bite when you put it into the wood! We bought two as well just in case but thankfully only needed one. Our drill wasn't up to much either. And we did do the small hole...thanks to my Dad's advice!

  • @JoshMcCallion

    @JoshMcCallion

    Thanks JC. I did pilot holes through the diagonals to stop them from splitting when I put the screw through. But I didn't pre drill holes on the uprights or cross struts. But after speaking to my Dad he said that I should have done really as it would have made my life easier. Some of the screws were pretty difficult to get in so pre drilling would have helped!

    Thanks Amaan. To be honest I haven't really tested them with any heavy weight, I have relied solely on the racking pins. That being said, I would opt for the black pipe that the Buff Dudes used, I don't think the metal that I used would be sufficient if you are planning to really load weight and rely on them as safety bars!

    Hi Josh, I am doing this project right now. I did your suggestion of two half holes to meet in the middle so the back of the hole isn't way off center. I have run into a problem where the two holes meet, since they are off by a touch, the drill bit binds and violently whips me around (and I'm a big guy). Do you have a trick for that or did your two holes meet perfectly in the middle? Thanks!

  • @JoshMcCallion

    @JoshMcCallion

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Chad, glad to hear you are mid build! We didn't actually have this issue so can only speculate on what will help. But I've spoken with my Dad just to see if we can help as much as possible and the suggestions are to make sure the drill is perfectly vertical down both planes. If you can get a 2nd pair of eyes to watch from the other angle while you are doing it, that can help a lot (that is what we did). They can say 'towards you' or 'away from you' whilst you make sure it is aligned from your perspective. General suggestions, make sure the drill is on the highest speed setting and gradually ease the teeth past the mis-aligned section. The holes were the biggest challenge for us also so you're not alone. I hope that helps, if you have any other queries fire away!
