How to Build a Handpan in 5 Minutes

Музыка

Here is a quick overview of nearly every step in creating a Iskra Handpan. If you watch closely there is much to learn here. Clearly it takes more than 5 min to build a handpan. Regardless I hope you enjoy. This video was shot before I could afford a gimbal or IBS camera, I did the best I could. Hope you enjoy :)

You may want to consider taking off both links. The first link has some kind of link to something that makes it look like you want some kind of contest, but it doesn’t even want you to exit out of it as it’s almost holding you hostage I had to do a hard close just to get out of it, it almost looks like some kind of sick adware. The second link you have for someone interested in buying that brand of handpan can’t buy anything because the company is completely shut down so I just wanted to bring it to your attention so you don’t waste peoples time clicking on either one of those links because it’s just a big waste of time

The original steel drums were hammered by hand. It's unlikely that the original Hang was made by hammer as the company PANArt was experimenting with tuned steel and had experience in forming, so likely they produced them as in this video. Copycats may have reverted to the hammer method. I was looking into this recently, hence I am here. I was surprised by the hydro forming as I had expected both sides to be simply pressed therefore giving a consistent product that (if the stock steel was consistent enough) could require little to no tuning.

most of the process is still done by hammers, deep draw and hydroform only form the shell, all architecture, shaping, and tuning is still done with hammers.

@@meditationdrumartprojectca4835 I am making Steel Pans (sometimes known as Steel Drum). The community has been a lot more open (not always though) but because I am not stepping on any business toes where I am. When u make hang however, you can literally take orders from anywhere in the world - and the more makers there are, the more the price will be driven down and they don't want that. At the moment it's 3 times the price of a Steel Pan and 1/5 the work (a goodSteel pan can have 32 notes on it). It's all about the business and keeping the Monopoly so if you wanna do it, you gotta teach yourself I guess.

  • @Handpan360

so far it hasn't been done well, anything pressed tends to sound bad and not stay in tune. The shells are often deep drawn or hydroformed, but the rest is very fine work and every choice greatly effects the end sound and stability of the instrument. Doesn't matter how good it sounds either, if it doesnt stay in tune, which sadly many of the pans on the market are like, going out of tune very quickly

I have seen and played hundreds of fine and poor quality instruments made from both total hand, and with the aid of tools and computers. its a funny thing our biasis with "handmade". If people understands how complicated the process of building a instrument like this really is, I think they would appreciate all aspects of the craft more. That is part of the reason for this video. I don't think people realize that the builders build almost all of their tools themselves also, and the incredible attention, skill and craft that that requires. I also know some of the best builders who don't even use pneumatic hammers and are in incredible pain in their 40's or 50's, and perhaps the world will lose another 20-30 years of great instruments had they used some tools to help. In this case it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference to the sound. in fact having the right tool for the job creates consistencies that most often produce better instruments. Where do we draw the line? Some of the best instruments are made by a process of nitriding, which is a specialized heat treatment process which involves a ton of chemistry, math, computers, and tech. What about how the sheets of steel are produced. Tons of computation goes into that as well. Would you have them forge there steel as well? Craftsmanship isn't defined by which tools are used, it is defined by the character and skill of the builders and the quality of the sound produced by the finished instrument. Durability and stability of the note is also important. I can tell you that from the inventors of this instrument to some of the best builders today who have been assisted by computer aided tech, there is still a insane level of love and care that goes into the instrument. This is not true for all producers, there are skilled and unskilled people everywhere. Thats just people, not tools.

The fine tuning is all done by hand. When you see all aspects of the business and build it’s in insane amount of work with a fair bit of overhead. To me it’s amazing that anyone builds these well. There is a lot of low quality builders with high margins, but most of the builders I know are working very hard for a pretty modest income that is incredibly hard on the body. It’s not nearly as profitable as people think. It’s is most definitely most often a la our of love. This is one style of building shown here. Often there is also a lot of shaping and hammering in addition to everything shown hear.

there is labor behind it and tuning, but you are correct, the metal is extremely cheap, the machien they use not so much. But at more, the instrument should be in the 500, the reason why they go for 4 times the price is because of howi trending it is and all the cool kids want one. even a RTX 2080 have more valuable component, more workforce, and hundreds of engineers behind it, and cost half the price of two sheet of metals tuned up :D
