How to Build a GLASS DOOR CABINET with DRAWER

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey friends! I'm back with a fun new furniture build to share...this time, it's a Display Cabinet with Drawer!
I built a glass door cabinet a few years ago that I LOVED. However, when we moved from our last house, it stayed with it and I've wanted to build another one for our new house since we moved in almost a year ago!
So, I'm excited this build has finally come to life.
A huge thank you to @Weaber Lumber supplying the white oak for this build! Check out Weaber Lumber products here: www.weaberlumber.com/hardwood...
Check out the step by step tutorial plus project details on the blog here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/diy-d...
Grab the printable plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
While being a content creator is fun, there are a lot of things going on at all times that sometimes cause you to have to rush to get things done. This build is a prime example of that. Too many deadlines on too many platforms plus trying to keep fresh content and videos coming out caused me to cut some corners I otherwise wouldn't have just to stay on schedule.
Nonetheless, I'm really happy with how this came out and I plan to revisit the doors at a later time to "touch up" the things I'm just not 100% happy with. All in all, it's a solid build I'm proud to put to good use.
Hope you enjoy watching!

Hey Shara! Nice job! For the past 40 years I've been a solid wood project builder. Thanks to your inspiration and easy to follow plans, my current project is mostly birch plywood. I do not miss all the messy glue-ups, trying to keep panels straight, sanding, not having to worry so much about wood movement! Thanks for showing an "old dog" new tricks. As always, have a great weekend Shara!

RIGHT?! People always ask why I use so much plywood and look down on it for some reason, but, while I love the look of the solid oak here, I could have built this from plywood in less than half the time avoiding glue ups and sanding. I highly doubt I have anything to teach you with 40 years of experience, but I'm glad I inspired you to give the plywood a go on your latest project :) I really appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend as well!

@14:55 : "...it turned out nice..." = understatement. That turned out fantastic. An experienced craftsperson overcomes "unplanned design changes" so that they are not noticeable, and I'd say this was an inspiring success. Thanks for posting, and thumbs up.

It seems like most of my builds don’t go as planned and part of being a woodworker is learning how to work around the unexpected problems, and also not focusing as much on the small imperfections that got noticed during the build. Love your channel.

The creative process is organic. When you're making something new, you're always going to have to figure some things out as you go along. You overcame each challenge and it came out fantastic. I get grief from my friends sometimes for being a hoarder but I buy large amounts of items I tend to use in every project. If I see something on sale or have a coupon, I just pick some up whether I need it or not at that moment. It's cut down on a lot of those interruptions. The curse of people who make things is that we always know what we envisioned and then see all the little things that didn't fit that vision. But know one else knows that. Thank you for bringing us along and showing your process.

You are so incredibly productive, and have the ability to make all your work appealing. I am one who encouraged you to branch out and include more solid wood and other joinery in your projects. I didn’t imagine you would be able to keep to the same schedule with that sort of project, though it sounds as if you would have had little trouble doing even that if you could have gotten supplies fast enough. It always takes me a while to appreciate what I’ve done because on completion of a project I focus on what I could have done differently. You have plenty to appreciate now.

Shara, I really enjoy seeing a new project from you on Saturday morning. I really appreciate the effort you put into the project and also into the video including the many links and indexes. I've built about six bookshelves following plans from New Yankee Workshop, none of which came out perfect, but the one we appreciate the most has glass doors on it. I built the door frames and my Wife took them down to the glass shop where they cut the glass to fit perfectly. We've enjoyed that cabinet for a very long time. Your video has brought back warm memories for us as well as adding some inspiration for some projects moving forward, Yours turned out very nice. Thanks for Sharing!

The cabinet turned out great Shara! You should be very happy with this, especially since you didn't have all the supplies you wanted. You made do with what you had and created something beautiful. I've been so inspired by your projects that I ordered an 18 volt circular saw and the Kreg cutting guides. I will get them next week and am excited to build some bigger projects. I have a nice SawStop cabinet saw but don't have the desire to wrestle with big sheets of plywood. The circular saw will come in so handy!

You know, as problem after problem kept creeping up, and most of them unforeseen, I felt so bad for you. I kept thinking of how something reminded me of myself, how that’s something I would do, or “been there, done that”! It was only as the video was nearing its end that I realized that this must be how people always see me, like I’m an affable nitwit!! (Just me, not you…you are allowed one really rough build…all of mine are really rough on me! 😊). Keep your head up Shara, I think that even though it’s not up to your normal standards, you are going to do whatever you can to fix that. Then this piece will always hold a special place in your heart…maybe a ‘specially dark place! But a special place nonetheless! 😉

Nice job! Love the look of that cabinet. If you ever run out of dowels again you could try a loose mortise and tenon.

Great video...as always! I really like the decision to change the back panel. Plus, I'm sorry your project did not go more smoothly but, it is a little comforting knowing that I'm not the only one that runs into issues during a build. I'm already looking forward to your next project! 👍 👍

Thanks so much! The back panel looks SO much better being oak. That was definitely the right call...I just wish I had done it from the beginning haha. Mistakes and problems are always part of the process for everyone--and if anyone claims they aren't, they're lying ha. You just learn how to recover from them and keep going. I appreciate you watching and have a great weekend!

Hi Shara! How are you? I love this project, but again what project have you done that I didn't love, LOL! And I totally agree with Joe Cahill in that you are the BEST woodworker on KZread! I have subscribed to your website and I'm doing a work bench so that I may finish organizing my garage so I can get started on doing your woodwork projects! I'm so excited to get started with your projects and send you pics of them! Question, I have a miter saw but looking into buying a table saw, what essentials do you think I should look for when purchasing a table saw? I use Ryobi tools. Thank you so much Shara, and keep those videos coming since I look forward to them each week!! LOL! Your number one fan in Huntsville, Al, Candy!

Great video, and congrats on figuring out how to work around your issues. How did you like working with solid wood over plywood? This is one of those projects, where no one will see any issues when they look at it, only you know about the problems. It looks good.

I don't know why but I usually prefer woodworking videos where the worker goes through difficult times and teach us how to overcome the issues. Seems more real to me since I also struggle a lot while building things. Really good video and thank you for sharing. One question, how do you handle wood flatness and squareness?, do you buy S4S wood or always work these details with an orbital sander?!

Hey Shara, really nice build and nice job on explaining your process. I'm curious. Did you (or have you since the build) have any issues with the long doors warping at all? Please let me know, as I'm thinking of building something similar in size and have some concerns about creating stiles that long... Thanks again! Scott

Yes, I used a rabbeting bit to cut the rabbets. A rabbeting bit has a bushing that runs along the edge of the piece so that you cut a consistent rabbet. So no other guides are needed.
