Hi Dustin, the gate brace needs to come from the outer top corner down to the inside bottom corner at the bottom hinge. This is the strongest part of the fence post. By doing it this way you transfer the weight of the gate down to the bottom hinge where you have the strongest support to help hold it up for the long haul. You do great videos keep up the good work.

Any excuse I can use to not use a table saw, I take. They’re more dangerous imo. Especially with framing lumber.

Hey gate builders! Got a few people on here saying the brace is backwards. Hmm. I guess some may think so but if it prevents the gate from sagging and keeps it square, it works for me. Glad the video is helping people. Thanks for watching everyone.

Home Mender Inc I suppose it's only backwards if the initial weight of the gate is to be held by the bottom hinge. Either way it should stop any shape change/sag. I always wondered about direction but a crossbrace is a brace! thanks for the freehand vid. I just don't know if I have the kahunas to do it on hardcore lol.

Depending on the direction you go with the cross brace it will either be in tension or compression. Wood is good in both so it really shouldn't matter.

Greetings from North Pole Alaska! Planning on replacing the existing "Box Store Fence in a Box" set up with a fence made of White Spruce (stain/ paint of course). Your video on building a gate has answered many questions I had, was easy to understand and to the point. Since our construction season is very short (It starts to snow in Sept and doesn't go away until Apr/ May) I want to make sure I know what needs to be done early so I can hit the ground running. Keep up the great work and know that your videos make a difference! Thanks a bunch!

Nice video Dustin! When i build a garden gate I like to use redwood or cedar instead of fir for the frame work since they are more stable. Fir tends to warp and twist when it gets dried out by the sun. Also the diagonal brace on the gate is a great idea but i would flip it around having it run from the top latch side to the bottom hinge side and put 2 screws on every board into the brace. Gravity is pulling down on the gate and there is more strength when it wants to drop and push against the hinge post.

hi miguel, thanks for the compliments. IF you do a double gate heres a few suggestions. You should be able to build them the same way however i would make sure you have a 4x6 or 6x6 post for your hinges and also throw a wheel on the bottom of the gate so they have something to rest on. I hope this helps.thanks for watching!

Dustin, Great job on the fence gate. What is your thoughts on using metal brackets on the gate frame at all 4 corners and the brace to make the gate even stronger?

Yep. That brace is bass ackwards. As a custom gate builder in OKC I see this mistake made time and time again perhaps run a turnbuckle along it and act as if you meant to do it!
