How to Build a Brick Patio | This Old House

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook shows how to build a brick patio. (See below for a shopping list, tools, and steps.)
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Cost: $1,000 to $2,000, for an average-size patio
Time: Two to three days for an average-size patio
Skill level: Moderate. Prepping the site can be exhausting, but laying the brick pavers goes pretty quickly
Shopping List for How to Build a Brick Patio:
- Brick pavers [amzn.to/2MRsgXe], used to create patio surface
- Graded base [amzn.to/2MP1tek], for forming sub-base for patio
- Sand [amzn.to/31v0R0C], is spread over sub-base and on top of patio
- Plastic edging [amzn.to/2Ig56W4], used to create border around brick patio
Tools for How to Build a Brick Patio:
- Shovel [amzn.to/31Isofg], used to excavate the site
- Nylon mason's line [amzn.to/31x0N0n] and stakes [amzn.to/2MOHc8v], for stretching layout lines across patio
- Plate compactor [amzn.to/2XbaOB7], used to tamp down soil, sub-base and brick pavers
- Garden rake [amzn.to/2Ihd41k], for spreading sand
- Hammer [amzn.to/2KhAu95], used to tap in spikes that hold down the edging
- Masonry saw [amzn.to/2IghKEy], used to cut brick pavers
- -Screed and screed rails [amzn.to/2XdUTBU], for establishing proper screed height of sand base
- Wheelbarrow [amzn.to/31v0vat], used to transport material
- Push broom [amzn.to/2MOCRT3], for sweeping excess sand from patio
Steps:
Take up all old bricks and paving stones from the patio, then use a shovel to remove 7 inches of soil from the area.
Run a gas-powered plate compactor over the area to tamp down the ground.
Spread out 2 inches of graded base, then compact the area.
Stretch nylon lines across the patio 3 inches above graded base.
Lay steel pipes, known as screed rails, in place 2 inches below nylon line.
Spread sand over the entire area.
Pull a screed along the rails to remove excess sand.
Fill in low spots with more sand and screed the area again.
Start setting pavers in one corner of the patio. Drop pavers into place, don't slide them.
Continue installing pavers, making sure to stagger the joints between courses.
Install plastic edging around the perimeter of the patio.
Spread ½ inch of sand over the bricks.
Run the plate compactor over the patio to vibrate the sand deep into the joints between the pavers.
Use a push broom to sweep excess sand from the patio.

When hammering in the spikes into the retaining edge, angle it so that you're pressing the edge towards the pavers instead of pulling it away.

Um, no, you _want_ a coarser sand because its job is to act like little sharp wedges that lodge in and stick to the sides of the pavers with plenty of locking friction. Also: "way to thick to fill..."? Oops, didn't you mean "way toO thick to fill..."?

There are NO videos of laying a brick floor over a cement walkway. whats up with that? I am about to wash down the walk way, brush some concrete glue on, mix my mortar with a little additive and lay the brick down like pavers, maybe I will butter the edges of each brick or maybe I will just lay the brick down and grout it like tile, idk. does that sound good to you?
