How to Build a Bird House DIY - Great for Chickadees and Swallows

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a very edited video on how I build my bird houses. It is based on a design called the "the Chalet" by www.realbirdhomes.com (no longer online). I make mine from a single piece of 8' x 6" x 1" Maine pine and using a 1-1/4" hole opening for small birds like Chickadees. I modify the design by using 10" roof over hangs instead of 12" since my houses are usually wall/tree/decorative mounted.
This house is going on ebay and this is house number #54 I've made using this an other designs.
Any questions please ask. The video was good at 20 minutes, making into 10 minutes forced a lot of removal of footage.

    I build a birdhouse few years ago and completely forgot about it. Yesterday I noticed that happy chickadee lives there. So it really works. I will build few more of those real soon. Very easy and fun project!

    Well, I used this video to make my version of the house with a mini camera inside the roof cavity looking down into the house. I erected the house into the crown of a tree outisde my house in November. Good news a small blue tit has taken up residence and sleeps through the night every night from dusk till dawn. He hasn't put any bedding inside even though we have had heavy snow and temp has been -4 which is pretty cold for south UK. Looking fwd to the spring. Thanks for the design, gr8 vid.

    BLU-MOL hole saws are really good. I bought a nice set on sale at Home Depot many years ago, most are unused, but for $60 and a nice case I didn't go wrong. Great items to hand down to the grand kids.

    I saw this video and ran out to Lowe's to buy some wood. I got one cedar 1*6*8' and one white pine. Cedar will be as is whereas I made the pine so the young ones can decorate. I did think of an easier way to attach the roof. Use a couple square clamps and attach the two roof boards together first. I used two screws and some wood glue. That way it's more secure and easier to attach to the birdhouse frame. Nice video.

(you really have to watch the video in full, ((plus use a little common sense XD)) to make sure you get it right!) turned out great, although I didn't have a palm sander at the time ( i did six) and took a lot of time sanding, (rounded edges and smooth like scrabble pieces) but worth every muscle ache lol. good show turbo! nice upload

    Yes, I've made a few for my aunt who lives in the city... squirrels were crazy! To fix that, I took sheet metal and created a metal surround on the front of the hole. Worked quite well, kept the hole the same size, but kept the squirrels at bay...they tried though.

    @logos2600 The birdhouses has been great. The pine does very well. Digging around, some people say that cedar isn't good for baby birds, I personally don't know but pine is cheap and very easy to work with. All of my houses are still in service, although they are no longer pretty as they weather differently, they are all quite functional. Have stained and painted quite a few decorative ones, sure the same could be done to one for in-use.

    Yes, they do. I've seen it first hand as I've had a birdhouse like this outside my bedroom window. I used to use just a decorative bark on the front...but predator birds use it to gain access to the entry. No perch and the problem is greatly reduced. Same reasons as found on most birdhouse sites on the internet.

  • @Turbo231
    @Turbo23114 жыл бұрын

    Yes, birds have lived in these houses. Generally, placement with a large opening near the front of the house is good, but luck is also involved. Don't have feeders near the birdhouse, they prefer some distance between their home and where they feed.

    i've seen some designs that just cut 2 corners, rather than 4. However, think of the shade. Even in the shade, with the wind blowing, it's not like you're actually cold. You're still just somewhat comfortable when the warm weather is here. I think of it like that. Also, the bird's feathers and nesting material will also help keep it warmer, if for some reason it's really cold outside.

    Nice video. The front overhang on the roof is especially nice. Please use a light colored paint on outside if boxes will be in open sun. See my channel for details. I have done testing on how colors and heat shields affect interior box temperatures. At ambient temperature of only 87°F my dark colored test box was 108°F inside which is enough to kill baby birds.

    Um...a saw is a saw...a drill is a drill. Use a $300 one or a $30, same result. I use a chop saw because it's fast, you could use a hand saw in the same manner. Ditto with the drill.

    It's still DIY. The difference is the tools uses. As long as the cut can be made with a saw, then you can substitute a saw. Same for the drill press. That drill bit that makes the hole, can actually just be used by a regular hand drill.
