How to Build a Bird House DIY - Great for Chickadees and Swallows
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is a very edited video on how I build my bird houses. It is based on a design called the "the Chalet" by www.realbirdhomes.com (no longer online). I make mine from a single piece of 8' x 6" x 1" Maine pine and using a 1-1/4" hole opening for small birds like Chickadees. I modify the design by using 10" roof over hangs instead of 12" since my houses are usually wall/tree/decorative mounted.
This house is going on ebay and this is house number #54 I've made using this an other designs.
Any questions please ask. The video was good at 20 minutes, making into 10 minutes forced a lot of removal of footage.

I build a birdhouse few years ago and completely forgot about it. Yesterday I noticed that happy chickadee lives there. So it really works. I will build few more of those real soon. Very easy and fun project!
You are an incredible speaker! Your soothing tone, cadence and genuine care is palpable. Listening to your story was both heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I wish you kindness and love.

Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks for the very useful video with a good way to hang. I built one 2 years ago and a pair of Bewick's wren raised 6 babies this year. I've built 4 more a month ago with lots of hope for next season.
Well, I used this video to make my version of the house with a mini camera inside the roof cavity looking down into the house. I erected the house into the crown of a tree outisde my house in November. Good news a small blue tit has taken up residence and sleeps through the night every night from dusk till dawn. He hasn't put any bedding inside even though we have had heavy snow and temp has been -4 which is pretty cold for south UK. Looking fwd to the spring. Thanks for the design, gr8 vid.
Great video! Can't wait to make this in the next few weeks here. 11 years later and your video is still being watched! ;)

Yes, it’s pretty crazy but I still build them this way today. Recently I used this design for a 4H woodworking project:
BLU-MOL hole saws are really good. I bought a nice set on sale at Home Depot many years ago, most are unused, but for $60 and a nice case I didn't go wrong. Great items to hand down to the grand kids.
You’re one of my best friend for this project... Tks my friend.
the secondary hole idea is the best part.
Great video! Thanks for taking your time and explaining so throughly!
I couldn't read your dimensions but still managed to throw one together that looks pretty good. Thanks.
excellent explained, well done. but the cat at the end is the most happy about bird house is finished :)
Well done! I will try this as a hobby and get better at it over time. I am not so well organised just yet but You show the way, Thank you!
Thank you for making this "how to" video. It inspired me to make one today and can say that your instructions were perfect and so was your birdhouse. I need much more practice to do as well.
Very nice, I cannot wait to get started... I love how you roughed up the inner front instead of having to attach a screen!! Irony that there is a cat litter box in the back ground too. LOL.
I saw this video and ran out to Lowe's to buy some wood. I got one cedar 1*6*8' and one white pine. Cedar will be as is whereas I made the pine so the young ones can decorate. I did think of an easier way to attach the roof. Use a couple square clamps and attach the two roof boards together first. I used two screws and some wood glue. That way it's more secure and easier to attach to the birdhouse frame. Nice video.
Like the way you use the speed square. Thanks for the video
Thanks for video. I like that plan easy to do and simple. Plan on making one this spring.
Nicely done instructions! Thank you
By far the best video I've seen for building bird houses, keep up the good work. Very professional an you explained every thing so nicely.
Hello, this is a great video. I've never made anything(!) and I made this birdhouse in July, just by following your video. I'm about to make another one as a Christmas present. Thanks so much :-)
cool video. very clear directions. Love it!
That is a very good design!!
Thanks for sharing your video. I picked up some good points
Excellent design!
And a fine job too!! After a little thought i managed to get it together. (you really have to watch the video in full, ((plus use a little common sense XD)) to make sure you get it right!) turned out great, although I didn't have a palm sander at the time ( i did six) and took a lot of time sanding, (rounded edges and smooth like scrabble pieces) but worth every muscle ache lol. good show turbo! nice upload
Good job nice bird house and also very clear to understandard nice job remember me old school time keep up the good job nice
Thanks for the helpful vid!👍

Hi
@heat1912 Thank you so much for the nice note. :) Glad you liked it.
Yes, I've made a few for my aunt who lives in the city... squirrels were crazy! To fix that, I took sheet metal and created a metal surround on the front of the hole. Worked quite well, kept the hole the same size, but kept the squirrels at bay...they tried though.
This is a nice and simple idea, but I'd use my pin nailer. I also live in a very wet climate, so I'd add furniture tacks to hold down a tin dollar store turkey pan roof.
Use a brass wire brush on your drill if you want a rough finish on pine, pulls out the grain without chewing up the board
Great video!
Well done!
@logos2600 The birdhouses has been great. The pine does very well. Digging around, some people say that cedar isn't good for baby birds, I personally don't know but pine is cheap and very easy to work with. All of my houses are still in service, although they are no longer pretty as they weather differently, they are all quite functional. Have stained and painted quite a few decorative ones, sure the same could be done to one for in-use.
Thx for this video. I did this project.
Yes, I use a drill press and it is using a hole saw for larger size holes.
good video my man thank you i have just set up my new workshop and i build them and toyes to
Yes, I had made several single slanting roof bird houses, extremely functional but not as pleasing to the eye. This design covers most of the functionality and looks more like a traditional house.
Yes, they do. I've seen it first hand as I've had a birdhouse like this outside my bedroom window. I used to use just a decorative bark on the front...but predator birds use it to gain access to the entry. No perch and the problem is greatly reduced. Same reasons as found on most birdhouse sites on the internet.
Yes, birds have lived in these houses. Generally, placement with a large opening near the front of the house is good, but luck is also involved. Don't have feeders near the birdhouse, they prefer some distance between their home and where they feed.
Yes...this house was built in the fall...most houses are used in the spring/summer, but thise design has been very successful with the birds.
i am trying to make nest for the birds and getting help from this video. thanks a lot.
Thank you! Very clear instructions...You do go work! Going to have my husband make this house. Couldnt help notice the Cat in the background..he's probally thinking" why are you building a nest box?", what about building something for me? Thanks :)
great video and explanation. Only thing I would do differntly is use screws and not nails. Untreated pine with nails will eventually warp and pull apart badly. I had that happen with a planter I made
lol i woke up today and thought why not build a birdhouse. ive never done anything like this so lets hope i can pull it off. this one looks easy enough, never know might become a intresting hobbie for me.
Nice video, just wondering how has this held up since you've put it up? I have built a birdhouse and other things for the outdoors and I've been using all cedar so far, but I'm considering changing to pine because its less expensive and easy to work with.
i wish you were my woodwork teacher!
Nice nesting box. I see the beneficiary walks through the back ground at 933.
I'm liking this design very much. I'm wondering if I can use them at the top of my fence posts? Will that be high enough for the chickadees?
@davidgrgic Probably...you can pick your bird by the side of the entry hole. Lots of info on the internet about that.
@c1nicolei Yes...had a pair of indoor cats converted to outside cats...think Rusty even makes a Cameo near the end.
Thanks. Nice to see someone else who still uses a hammer. ☺️
Very good video - do you have any for purple martins?
Very good video; thank you. :)
Nice work table. And workshop. I need to make a workbench. Any suggestions?
@TheVicksta1 Thank you for the nice post. :)
nice i like birds thanx for showing
Did you have any birds come to that house? Oh and I was wondering will birds just find the house and start using it or do you have to attract them to the house, how does that work? If there is a bird feeder in the area, would that be good enough?
@Turbo231 Alright thanks, glad your houses are doing well.
Unsanded is fine. Cutting groves up to the hole is plenty.
Ok thanks. Oh and I meant like was there one living in that one that you built on the video.
Hi the measurements for the with of the board all the same or is it all different? Please let me know ASAP thanks so much btw very nice!
@Turbo231

The board width is the same at 5-1/2 inches.
Good video with some good pointers, I really like at the end where the kitty kat was wondering thru, cracked me up, birdhouse...cat.. get it?, still a good video tho.
perches seem to be a standard in old style birdhouses. do perches attract predators? very nice birdhouse video-
Yes, that would be plenty high.
The house is so pleasing to look at! But how do you discourage it from becoming a house for wasps?
@Turbo231

I don’t. You would need to keep an eye on the house to see if it was being used correctly. I have seen them used as a house for mice.
Nice work. Can you please share the plan? I am hoping to make this myself as well. Thanks :)
i wish i had that workshop
@Turbo231 Do you think this would work for House Sparrows as well?
Hello does the hole needs to be always central and circular ?
@Turbo231

Technically no but I’d do additional research on the Internet to see if would be ok, whatever shape and location you pick. For decorative houses it wouldn’t matter.

hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to build a birdhouse try Panlarko Expert Aviary Planner (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
The hole entry size is how you determine what bird lives in the house. That's all you can do besides removing nests when the wrong birds move in.
hi turbo i was wondering if you could be so kind and post a link or write in the comments of all the dimensions for the bird house thx.
Nice small birds will use 1-1/4" hole. Larger then that gets you larger birds.
The cat is checking out the progress on his take out lunch trap....
@ustfu Doesn't take fancy tools. A hand saw, drill, and hammer will do just fine Those fancy tools just make it faster and easier, but are certainly not required. :-)
Nice job :) GOD BLESS all :)
awesome video but i ask myself, isn't it a bit too much ventilation? like i think a birdhouse is for keeping the birds a little warmer but isn't it gonna be cold with so uch ventilation?
@pershop4950

i've seen some designs that just cut 2 corners, rather than 4. However, think of the shade. Even in the shade, with the wind blowing, it's not like you're actually cold. You're still just somewhat comfortable when the warm weather is here. I think of it like that. Also, the bird's feathers and nesting material will also help keep it warmer, if for some reason it's really cold outside.
That's quite a saw!!
@BDavisOutdoors You work in industry long enough, it's a no brainer.
go to 9:21 because in the baskround to the right theres a bucket that say scoop away
Made one today out of some scrap wood vary easy thanks now the wife wants more for her sisters did I say thanks lol
great
Any way you could the bright out the dimensions or post a copy of your Plans
Nice video. The front overhang on the roof is especially nice. Please use a light colored paint on outside if boxes will be in open sun. See my channel for details. I have done testing on how colors and heat shields affect interior box temperatures. At ambient temperature of only 87°F my dark colored test box was 108°F inside which is enough to kill baby birds.
We need to cut one piece of roof smaller than the other. Cut should be the thickness of the piece.

If you wanted it the same, yes. It’s an adjustment in design for ease of construction.
Not yet but maybe in a few years.
How much did it cost to make this birdhouse? How much did you sell it for?
Where could I get that paper of the birdhouse since the website closed down?
What is the name of that tool that cuts? Thanks.
compound miter saw
Can you please provide the scheme with the dimensions Please?. I cannot see them through the video. Thnx in advanced
Convince me.. How should this be a DYI video when the saw itself which is the most important part is something that i only need to have working as a carpenter or if i cut wood for dinner.. -_-! Simple tools?, cheap tools? for regular house holds? please?
@Turbo231

Um...a saw is a saw...a drill is a drill. Use a $300 one or a $30, same result. I use a chop saw because it's fast, you could use a hand saw in the same manner. Ditto with the drill.

It's still DIY. The difference is the tools uses. As long as the cut can be made with a saw, then you can substitute a saw. Same for the drill press. That drill bit that makes the hole, can actually just be used by a regular hand drill.
Hi everyone, very easiest process is elaborately given in this video to make a Bird House.
What was the width of the board you used?
@Turbo231

6”, so it measures 5.5”
did he account for 1/8 of inch loss from the blade when measuring?
@rayatlast

I though about that too.

isn’t that what the loose end of the measuring tape is for? to compensate?

He cut the middle of the line . Bush league
ive made quite a few, the reason for quite a few is because the squirls eat the wood!!!!!
fence post would be 6 feet at the highest point.
lol i am a dumbass.. hahaha looked like something else was going on there... hahah. Now it all makes sense. good stuff!
