**DISCLAIMER** PLEASE DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE. Dr. Greenway references the use of toothpaste but does not specify the type that should be used. DO NOT use human toothpaste as the the fluoride is toxic to cats and dogs. Instead we recommend an enzymatic toothpaste for cats with a VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal as they have been rigorously tested and are proven to be effective.

    All vets train with Tibetan monks, using the most rabid tigers from Siberia and Bengal. All cats are given at birth a record of the vets in their area that have survived the gruelling training so it's futile for them to put up a fight. You have not received anything close to that so to your cat you're fair game.

    Maybe because with you ans at home they feel safe in their environment so they react in the way they feel while at the vet they are unfamiliar with their surroundings and therefore maybe are sort of assessing how to react by not really reacting at all...just my thoughts

    It took some time before Kiwi warmed up to having her teeth brushed. Try rubbing your fingers inside of the mouth to get your cat used to having an object there (if you're concerned about being bitten wrap gauze around your finger) until you notice your cat is more open to this exercise and then go in with the brush! I had no idea that rescued kittens/from shelters have a high rate of periodontal disease. I thought their breath smelled bad because they were losing their teeth but they get "juvenile gingivitis" so then one of my cats started sneezing a lot and it was because the inflammation went up to her nasal passages. That's when I found out she and her brother both have gingivitis and have already lost 2 of the their teeth. Biggest shock ever, I've had 3 other cats that weren't adopted from a shelter and no such thing like that ever happened only 1 was starting to have dental problems a few years before she passed. So now I'm trying to get them comfortable with getting their teeth brushed and giving them immunity support and omega vitamins to see if that can also help their gum health. I was told it can settle down by the time they hit 2-3 years or be permanent. Completely new experience for me, I hope this information will be of use to someone in the future that's considering adopting a rescued kitten so that they can do things to take care of their gum health right away.

    I got my cat used to getting his teeth brushed since he was young every morning and right after he gets his daily brush and play time. He's gotten to enjoy the routine and purrs like mad the entire time. If I'm having a slow start to the morning he'll get next to his cat box where he knows I keep all his things and starts rubbing up against it and meowing at me. The whole routine (minus the play time) with the teeth and coat brushing takes less than 10 minutes. Hes never had teeth issues and he has yet to spew up a hair ball. This video helped a lot when I first got started caring for him, thank you!

    If you start to notice your cat being in pain when you touch around their mouth or that they snap at you when you try to pet them near their mouth, try to do a grain-free diet. My cat had issues with her gums when she was a kitten and no one could figure out the problem. We were told that she was allergic to her own teeth and we would have to remove all her teeth and possibly put her down. We tried a grain-free diet and she’s doing much better. The redness in her gums went away and she’s no longer in pain. If you haven’t tried grain-free, I would try it. I hope your cat is doing well:)

    Worth noting is to actually talk to your cat gently, soothingly and quietly... if you get mad/animated it will trigger a fight/flight reaction... also important to do on those rare occasions you need to bath or shave a cat. Also, grip a cat FIRMLY... obviously don’t hurt it, but don’t give it any wiggle room either... it just works against you...when they know they can’t move they don’t freak out nearly as much... When they sense wiggle room, they will try to break free. Between a firm grip and a calm voice, they tend to be much more calm/restrained... As with anything, work up to it slowly (over days/weeks) if you cat is high strung...

    I knew that I was brushing my cat's teeth in the right motion. Thanks for posting this!

  • @daviddavidson2357
    @daviddavidson23574 ай бұрын

    Started brushing recently because of this. Cat is only coming on 4 years old, was using my finger to brush her teeth when she was a kitten to try and get her used to it but never started daily brushing. Her gums looked a bit inflamed last year and her mood completely changed, getting much more defensive so I took her to the vet, was told she had "really mild" gingivitis and was given some dentisept (chlorhexidine in paste that acts like glue almost and sticks to teeth, skin and gums) and told to use it "about once a week to once a fortnight." Honestly he seemed more intent on that being used, then frequent cleaning under general anaesthetic and extractions "when necessary" rather than being preventative. I kept doing that but her gums have gotten worse, seems like she's lost a few premolars (possibly from tooth resorption as there's a tiny nub of a tooth left, about 2.5mm diameter by 1mm depth that moves freely but isn't broken, or maybe a retained milk tooth) so I started brushing just over a week ago, starting with a wet cotton bud with 1% peroxide solution on it, then Virbac toothpaste (no more peroxide, but when I out a bit of the paste on my finger she took off running, so she must hate the smell) with the CET toothbrush. There's some bleeding (enough to stain the brush red) from her gums and when getting along/under the gum line she usually jumps in pain, though hopefully daily brushing will help reverse the gingivitis and there'll be no bleeding after a few months. She has to be held to get her teeth brushed, I'll try brushing her teeth while sitting behind her while she's facing a corner, but holding her and brushing seems to work well enough. She'll yowl and complain but won't claw or bite. Hopefully she'll get used to it.

    Honestly, my Max was a nightmare with this at first, and with my busy schedule, I don't have the time or life-organization to introduce him to it over the course of many weeks, so I sort of dove right in an expedited way from day 1: introduce the paste, day 2: introduce the brush, day 3: brush with paste. Thankfully, he was never a biter, and when he "play-nibbles," as I call it, it doesn't even kill the little bugs he likes to play with around the house (was rejected by mother, so he didn't even get the few weeks of rough play with his littermates that lots of kittens get even though they get adopted out at ~2 months). He is an escape artist, though, and no matter how firmly I held him, he managed to wriggle out of my arms (pretty amazing, as I'm a relatively strong and healthy 30 year old man). But I can say, if you commit to regular brushing ,somehow cats seem to become aware that not only is it going to be a regular part of their lives but also that it is somehow something that might be good for them (who knows, it surely seems that way with Max now, as he now seems to welcome and, dare I say, even look forward to the free, gentle, TLC). I believe if you one sticks with it, one's cat will start to become MUCH easier to brush over a time period that is a lot shorter than you'd expect. Either that or Max is just a special case and it might take a tad longer.

    It gets easier with practice! Things that help are soft bristle toothbrushes which is softer on their gums and always use enzymatic toothpaste that is safe for cats, most like the flavour of pet toothpastes. You've got this!

    To everyone screaming cat more behaved at vet than at home: try using a little catnip! I noticed my loud unruly cat actuality purring and calmly allowing the vet to examine him. Right before this I also noticed them spread a little dry herb on the table(catnip) It really mellows them out and makes them euphoric lol be warned to not use too much though or they'll be over stimulated! 😂

    Great video. Unfortunately, I did not know you could do this for your cat as my Vet never told me to do this with her until much later in my cat's life and by that point in time, it was too difficult for me to try this with her as she was always fiesty and so, her teeth ended up having a lot tarter. Getting her teeth cleaned earlier was not an option as it was very expensive. So I had to leave it. Still, my cat lived a long life to 18 years, and just recently had to be put to sleep as her health had deteriorated significantly. It was very hard to let her go but had to do it to end her suffering.

    I just successfully brushed my 10 week old male kitten's teeth. First, I gently rubbed cat toothpaste on Maxie Drew's teeth, I held him gently and praised his calm, willing demeanor in a soft kind voice. Then, I gently brushed his teeth with his toothbrush. It had a little toothpaste on it as well. The whole time I spoke to him kindly, let him know how proud I am of him. Then when we were finished he got down gently from my lap. I clapped softly for him and praised his conduct. Fun and rewarding experience! Maxie Drew and I are victorious! I pray for this same victory with your cat(s) as well. Cheers! 💯☺🌟😻💛

    Great video. I just started and am getting my cat used to it. She is 2, and she doesn't eat wet food anymore. Her sister lives with her, and seems to have strong teeth and eat wet food. I should have started this years ago when she had an ear infection, and the vet told me she was getting tarter. She has the "sweeter" personality (the one with bad teeth) of the two. The other one is nice, but I would lose a finger tip.
