How To BRUSH & Detangle Your Hair (WITHOUT DAMAGING IT)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Most men brush their hair wrong. When it comes to brushing hair, guys tend to start at the scalp and force their way through all the knots and tangles until they reach the end. This is the perfect storm for breakage and damage.
In this video, I go over the main cause of hair breakage (hint: brushing your hair wrong), if you should brush your hair wet or dry, and several hair brushing mistakes I see many men make and how to prevent them.

So I realize I forgot to mention how OFTEN to brush. For straight/wavy hair, I would say twice a day is best. Detangle once in the morning and once before bed. If you have curly hair it’s probably best to only brush on wash days to maintain the integrity of the curls longer. And it’s already wet from washing which reduces damage.

My hair goes way down my back, about 24 inches from scalp to end and I found my hair gets more damage when dry brushing and I find wet brushing/detangling. I never took care of my hair until it reached that arm pit length you got and I realized the longer it got the harder it was to maintain. That's why long hair takes so much haircare throughout the day.

Hey I'm gonna drop some of what I learned with my own hair and hopefully it can help anyone who reads this. So on my wash days I take my brush into the shower and use is to detangle hair with conditioner in it to help me run through it. I go from tip to root and anytime I encounter a tangle I give back down and attack it from below. I also noticed that if I cup the hair in my palm and comb it from the other side against my palm, it instantly provides me with some kind of leverage to unlock the tangle without resistance. I then towel dry my hair after rinsing and comb it again before it fully dries. That way when I go to style it, it is tangle free. Lastly I found that Ausse leave in conditioner works for detangling hair on the go even better than my Redkin leave in conditioner. And as far as keeping it frizz free which turns into tangles during the day. I use a tiny bit of argan oil. Just enough to lubricate it without making it greasy.

Hey man, thanks for the tip. I've been trying to take care of my hair without damaging my hair, especially, when it came to combing, and since my hair is a bit waivy and somewhat straight, I tend to comb my hair in and out of the shower and only used conditioner for the routine, and also rough drying my hair alot which is a big no no. Now I might have to change up the routine which would take some getting used too in the meantime. Again, thank you

I think its been acknowledged by most curly hair people, including myself, that wet brushing prevents alot of breakage for us. I use a 'Wet Brush'. the bristiles are thin, flexible, short and they sit on a flexible cushion. I brush thru with a slippery detangler/conditioner. Wet curly hair straightens out and doesn't stick to each other as much imho. The Tek brush looks better than most, but the larger bristles would cause more friction and pull on hair imho. I can see why Trav is ok with it, fine straight hair is miles easier to brush/comb thru. I think the mildest brush would be a boar bristle brush, it just won't detangle very well as the bristles won't be able to go too deep, imho.

For me it's harder to start combing/brushing from the ends which is the thickest and messiest part. I'm a guy thats always liked to wear my hair long. However, the problem I've always had is mine is curly and when long it tangles so bad with rats to comb through. Which many times in the past has kept me from keeping it long. When mine is wet like after a bath, it's tangle city. And it sucks getting into the 50s now as I feel sometimes too old and not youthfully attractive to do this style although I like it. In my family thinning hair has also been an issue, my older brother is almost bald. I've been fairly lucky so far although it is thinning in the front which is frustrating. But will try these techniques combing wet next time.

Hey Trav, I found your channel watching Beard Brand and have a question. I'm a competitive swimmer so I'm in chlorinated water daily, but I am also trying to grow my hair out healthily. I have been growing it out for roughly 10 months with the same routine of washing and conditioning it nearly everyday and my hair just feels tired. What could I change about the way I care for my hair to make it look less dry and flat but more lively?

You don’t wanna wash it too much, prob anywhere from 1-3 times a week is good, 1-2 if you have more dry hair naturally and 2-3 if you have oily hair naturally, also avoid shampoos with sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate

I've been needing to get into brushing my longer hair now for a minute but I like my hair wavier than straight and don't want to lose my curls by combing. What's the best approach for this?

Brush your hair in the shower when it has conditioner, scrunch hair after microfiber towel for 25 min. As for brushing during the week, finger detangle until your waves fall naturally after a day or two - then brush. Scalp health is important.

How is your facial hair growth progression? The video about growing facial hair without Minoxidil was posted three months ago, and I have been waiting to see how it is going for you before purchasing the product you advertised. Can you post a video? I have been watching your content regularly since I decided to let my hair grow since September 2019.

So a quick question. If I'm not trying to strip the oils on my hair, what are your thoughts on using a beard wash for your hair? I'm using johnny slicks beard wash and beard washes are meant to clean without stripping oils. I'm just curious of what your thoughts are

I have fine medium-length hair. A "Tangle Teezer" brand of brush really makes detangling a lot easier. Even especially knotted, tangled hair just resolves itself with minimal tugging.

Stylists have told me not to brush hair when wet, only use a comb and gently. A round brush is OK if you take your time.
