    The chemical engineer in me gets very scared when I see a PRD/PRV being used as a control valve you should always have a separate control system. You could argue that it fails safe ( if the spring fails it will open) but regular lifting of the pressure relief valve could have unforeseen results for example wort could splash dry and accumulate on the valve or hop pieces. It is quite conceivable that failure would occur resulting in the fermenter exceeding its design pressure. They make control valves for these called spunding valves they are a simple regulator that maintains a set pressure, if that valve fails then you can rely on your PRV doing its job and preventing the system from exceeding its design pressure. *This is not my professional opinion running a safe system is your responsibility and you should follow all manufacturers guidelines *

    My thoughts exactly, there are warnings and disclaimers in the instructions that state it is safe to do but I am not taking any chances with it in future. I will be putting a secondary safety valve like a blowtie to relieve pressure that may occur as a result of excess krausen from rich brews. Thanks for the great piece of information @Ralphgtx280 this is why I do KZread.

    @@SimpleHomeBrew sweet , big advantage of the blowtie is you can ajust the pressure to any pressure you want typically people are pressure fermenting in the 4-10 PSI range

    Enjoyed video, I’m yet to try pressure ferment, others suggest best to use a bow tie pressure arrangement as the safety valve may get clogged up and cause over pressure and, worse case, blow up fermenter. Started my journey 4 years, extract with bottling now all grain with the mono Kegs. Having fun, love the mystery and the journey. Keep the videos coming.

    I think the snobbery about kit yeast stems from the early days of homebrew when you were just supplied with a generic ale yeast. So it made no difference whether you bought a lager, a bitter or a pale ale you just got the same yeast with the kit. I believe things have advanced a lot since those days.

  • @SimpleHomeBrew

    You are so right. I have had mostly good results with my brews using kit yeasts. If I need to change the profile of the beer I will throw in something that suits it.

    Does adding Campden tablets kill you yeast?

  • @SimpleHomeBrew

    @SimpleHomeBrew

    Hi @mikelloyd9934, no not at all. you only add Half a tablet for around 20 litres. This will neutralize the chorine and chloramine but not harm your yeast the dose is very low.
