How to breathe from diaphragm

Whether you are a public speaker, singer or even an athlete, it is useful to know how breath can affect the quality of your craft.
In this video voice coach Darren McStay offers some insight into our most valuable breathing muscle 'The Diaphragm' and how we might better utilise it to speak and sing.
Some times called, belly breathing or how to sing from the stomach; diaphragmatic breathing is a natural occurrence which we can train to improve our voice.

Just got my first 100 subscribers about a week ago, and I found your tips and insights highly helpful! Now, that part of my story didn’t have too many places where I could make use of your advice, but I’ll add in more diverse speaking parts as I keep writing. You’re a genuine inspiration. 😃

This is exactly the thought process I had whilst watching one of your other videos yesterday. When you've just done something that makes you get out of breath your body tries to get in as much air as possible, so surely that same process should help when trying to project your voice

When i was a teen i used to speak very low to have a deeper voice in a forced way (looking at it now, it was a ridicolous error lol), now growing up i have a very deep and resonant voice but I've noticed that everytime i speak my Adam Apple drops a little bit down than is original position, i don't know if this always happened, i just noticed that some week ago, does that mean that i am speaking in a lower tone than my "original"? Everybody keeps compliment with me for my voice on a daily basis, but i'm afraid that's not my " Real voice"

Your Adam’s apple is the front of your thyroid cartilage that’s part of your larynx which houses your vocal folds. The whole mechanism moves in various ways to enable speech! In short… that’s normal!

The best video on this topic I've ever seen. And for the first time I've had the chance to finally feel the diaphragm really working! I would also like to know, when a person need work to get a more varied tone in their voices, is it always important to go over singing concepts? Does it help? Thanks a lot.

Question: Being that speaking and body language is most of the time done unconsciously, it makes sense that to change these things you would use subconscious techniques like visualization, affirmations or hypnotherapy. Do you agree and how would you practically use these techniques to alter ones normal speaking voice?

Can I ask you something? I have Muscle Tension Dysphonia for 8 years now because of chronic emotional stress. When I talk, I immediately get a burning, tired pain in my throat. If I stop talking, the pain slowly goes away. However, the last 10 days I experience a different kind of pain in my throat muscles: a heavy pain with hoarseness. I get this pain out of the nothing when being silent. This kind of pain has nothing to do with speaking. Its a pain that comes and goes everyday. In the morning its almost gone, but during the day it gets worse/heavier/hoarser and in the evening it's the worst heaviest hoarse pain. The next day in the morning it is almost gone. But then it comes up again No one talks about this kind of pain I feel. It's like something is pulling on the throat muscles and it's giving a real heavy and hoarse feeling. I can also point exactly the place where it is: it is below the thyroid cartilage, more on the level where the cricothyroid muscles are, and then exactly in the middle of it. What is this weird heavy pain I experience? Is it (emotional) stress or is it something worse like laryngeal cancer? I've never experienced this heavy hoarse pain before in my 8 years of MTD. Also, this heavy hoarse pain occurs when I'm NOT speaking. Do you have any idea of what this can be because you're an expert in voice? My doctor doesn't know what this is that I experience.

I am not qualified to answer this I’m afraid. Might I suggest you visit a speech pathologist. So sorry this sounds very uncomfortable. I hope you can find someone who will help guide you. In person will always be most effective. 💪

@@ImproveYourVoice my speech pathologist doesnt know it either. She said 'i think its stress but i dont know for sure go to the doctor' but the doctor doesn't know it either. I think its the chronic stress or thyroid problems. But yes its below my thyroid cartilage, its around the cricothyroid muscles exactly in the middle of the throat. But no one knows. Thank you for your answer!

I know that it is a term that people use, but technically you can’t speak from the diaphragm. I guess people might refer to speaking from the diaphragm as breath support. What I am trying to figure out is what can I do to achieve a smooth flowing speaking voice? In my perspective, having a smooth flowing speaking voice sounds pleasant to the ear and can be effective in your personal and business life. Please let me know your perspective on this.

Without using your diaphragm you would not breathe and therefore die! Stop trying to focus on it and try to connect your words instead! The diaphragm will just do it’s thing. However training it is still possible.?
