How to Break an Unknown Cipher

In this video, we show how you can analyze and break a ciphertext, which was encrypted with an unknown type of cipher. Clearly, we use CrypTool 2 for that :-)
We show, how a cryptanalyst would analyze the cipher by:
1) Creating a transcription
2) Analyzing the type of cipher
3) Breaking the cipher
For that purpose, we use an original historical encrypted letter, which was sent in a bottle during the US civil war. The message was probably sent from John Grimes Walker. The receiver was Confederate general John Pemberton. The message is kept at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond and its content was unknown until a CIA code breaker broke it in 2010.

Thanks for this informative video. I cracked the message using the Vigenere Cipher square which I have, along with the Key: Manchesterbluff. I didn't use any special software, just good old fashioned paper & pen!
Great video. Today I learned that John S Pemberton, inventor of Coca Cola, was a Confederate officer but NOT the recipient of this letter.
Nice video. Kryptos K0 has all the keys and second layer checks. Replace Q with illusion, O with underground, EX a layer 2 and X to ? Layer 2. The E's and X's get Ted off when solving. The EEE invisable keep the placements when solving for a check. It's wild he could put so much in it with directions. The order of K3 from steps learned in K0. E,X a check. Also links to layer 2 Position E, X abiscissa. For meaning. Multiple checks when done right. Just add the X's they left out. You add a ? To the end of position E when it becomes a question. You will need to X a few spots after T'ing the E,X's. The solo E becomes EX as one of many checks. Just fallow the rules/instructions.
