How to Blur Backgrounds in GIMP 2.10 - Shallow Depth of Field Effect

In this tutorial, I show you how to blur the background in your photos to make it appear as if you used an expensive lens with a shallow depth of field to take the image. This is a fairly simple effect to create using the foreground select tool and the resynthesizer plugin (i.e. Heal Selection).

    So in the current versions of gimp, these things are done very easily. But ya, you have shown what was good at that version, so no complains for that 🙂👍. So after you have made the selection of model using select tool, you can go to select > invert. Then simply filters > blur > gaussian blur and set the blur value to a desirable one, that's it 👍

    Thank you this worked great! I also found when you're refining the mask around soft edges (like hair or a fuzzy sweater) if you use a soft edge brush (like brush 2 with a hardness set at 25) and you make the brush larger (I used 50) you can soften the mask edges to make it look more natural.

    I've tried this method and the easy method with just cutting out the model and blurring the background directly. I find this method (around 20 steps, yes, but doable) so much more natural! I have made a note of the steps and am altering now a lot of my recent photos from Venice carnival. (After 5 photos I know what to do without checking my list, so it's definitely not overly complicated.) Thanks for this tutorial.

    Is there a technique to gaussian blur gradually? i.e. From clear to a little blur to a lot of blur? Maybe with the gradient tool and/or grey-ish brush + opacity over non-masked background?

    how do i get the foreground select "mode options" to appear on the left side because I dont see that tool option on my gimp. I have to go to tools-selection tools-foreground select then I see a small window on the right says preview mask underneath but on my left side it just shows the different pic layers and not the tool options that you have.

    I've been currently looking for a more efficient method of blurring background, I guess I'm a Hands-On person, but does this produce a more quality image than just duplicate your layer, use a blur tool on the entire image and use opacity to get the desired level of blur and sharpness and then use your eraser tool at various opacities to bring your foreground back into Focus, I found this method although time consuming and tedious to be effective, correct me if I'm wrong?

    Sorry for the dumb question, but when I use the lasso tool, it selects from both my layers and therefore when I do Filter>Enhance>Heal Selection, the heal affects both of my layers. I would assume there is quite an easy fix for this but I have yet to find it on my own. Thanks for all the very helpful videos !

    I think the important thing is the process what you do with the Resynthesizer Plugin, I mean as you said you need to "replicate" the pixels around the girl. I was testing with other suggestions in these same comments, but I realized at the end if I do not "clone" the around pixels, the blur effect distorts the contour. Many thanks for the tutorial.

    I usually use the right lens to get an blurred background and there are fundamental differences between blurred background between real and fake. First, the parts deeper in the background are more out of focus than parts close to the subject. Blurring whole background will make it very unnatural looking. I am still not sure how to solve this right and was not able to reproduce this effect with GIMP. The second thing is, based on the lens, you can get in example rings or "bokeh" effects on spotlights and such. This is also hard to cover.

  • @Patrick-vr2hb

    You might want to try Zoom Motion Blur if you haven't already, and you can also find some Bokeh brushes for GIMP.

  • @thingsiplay

    @thingsiplay

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Patrick-vr2hb That is an entirely different effect. What I mean is, blur needs to take the third dimension into account, which is quite not possible with 2D images. Maybe in the future with the help of some AI this can be achieved in a more natural looking way.

    Or we can Just take a picture of the background and then your picture and add the background picture and then open as layers and add the other pic and resize it then take the earse tool and then don't earse the subject earse the background 😁

    This is certainly a cleaner way to do it, but there are honestly a lot faster ways to do it. The way I like to do it is to use the path tool in place of the lasso to select the model, invert and erase the background, use the filter on the background layer, then paste the model down onto it. From there you can fine tune it and do very minor transforms to hide mistakes.
