How To Begin Liberty Training Gently Through Subtle Communication

This video shows what a typical first liberty session looks like for me. Many people expect the first session to be in a round-pen, however, I like to begin with gentle, subtle communication in a space that is large enough for the horse to get away from me if he feels the need to 🕊
I begin by showing the horse that I am aware of him- that I see him and respond to his small signals. This can be done at a distance, it is not necessary to be right next to the horse. Ensuring that the horse feels seen and heard is the beginning of building a connection as this promotes a feeling of safety. A feeling of safety opens up the doors to social engagement, curiosity and learning 😇
I show him that everything he does influences my responses in a subtle but consistent way. This helps him feel more in control and gives him an even stronger sense of safety. As the horse grows in confidence and curiosity, he will approach to investigate further!
When the horse approaches and engages, it is the prime opportunity to show him what a nice place it is to be together. I want to share space and stillness, and give him something nice like a scratch if he likes that. This beautiful gelding was hesitant to let me scratch at first, but when I showed him that I saw his concern, he was happy to position himself for a scratch.
In future sessions, I always want the horse to be the one to approach and initiate training. That is the beginning to this form of liberty training where the horse truly feels like he has a choice, rather than performing through obedience.
