HOW TO BECOME AN EXCHANGE STUDENT // How to Study Abroad in High School
Ойын-сауық
So How exactly do you Become a Foreign Exchange Student in High school? How to Study Abroad as a high school student? Well in this video I give a general overview and I spill some details and steps of the process, including:
1. Research
2. Convince the Parents
3. Choose Organization/ Program
4. Apply
5. Accepted or Declined
6. Prepare to Go!
The organization that made my exchange to Italy possible was RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) and I (HIGHLY) recommend:
www.rotary.org/en/our-program...
Other organizations that are credible to look at:
EF (Education First) www.ef.edu/pg/student-exchange/
AFS www.afsusa.org/study-abroad/

Ahh! That's awesome especially because a lot of parents will completely blow off the idea. If you aren't sure what the next step is, I would go to your counselor if anyone has already done exchange in your school and what they did. If no one has gone well there will be more planning but thats the fun part ;)

Selah Grace That’s actually really cool since you are only a freshman. Did you do it this school year? Me and my cousin want to do it since we are already in high school, but our parents aren’t totally on board with the idea. 😕 They are 50/50. We plan on going next year, because of covid-19. But do you have any suggestions for us?

Things to look into when choosing a country to live in or visit 1. Does the country allow Dual Citizenship? 2. What is the crime rate of that country? 3. Is there any conflict in that country? 4. Is that country exceptionally poor? 5. Is there any dangerous weather conditions? 6. What is the climate of that country? 7. Is the water in that country safe to drink? Is there famine? Is there an ongoing crisis? 8. Do the people of that country speak a different language(s)? 9. Do the people of that country believe in a different religion(s)? 10. What are the customs and culture of that country? 11. What is the political status of that country? 12. What is the cost(s)/expenses of living in that country? 13. How well is the technology in that country? 14. How well is the medical care in that country?

I'm going into high school soon and through out my six and seventh grade years I have considered becoming an exchange student. This would definitely be something out of my comfort zone but it would be enlightening. I was thinking about exchanging to either Japan, Korea or France. Your tutorial was extremely helpful and I'm sure I will be able to follow these steps but my only problem will be convincing my parents. We haven't been out of the country before so it would be a new experience for them to let me travel to a whole other country, Alone! I'm worried that I won't be convincing enough or that they will just be too paranoid to let me go..any advice?
@KennaBurke
5 жыл бұрын
Flower 花 Funny you should ask! I just made a video about this with my dad so he shares the parent’s perspective and maybe ideas for you to mention when you talk to them. I had never been out of the country either before so I understand how it seems a little far fetched... don’t be fooled it is totally possible. You just have to prove you’re serious and willing to work for it. I got a job for example and went and talked to my counselor to figure out how I would graduate on time. Doing all of this shows how it is REALISTIC.

Sick video, cleared up a lot of stuff. I’ve applied to rotary to become an exchange student (I’d like to go to South Korea or Japan). I was wondering though, how has your year in exchange effected your school life? What did your senior year look like course wise? And if you went to college, did being an exchange student effect applying to college in any way?
@KennaBurke
4 жыл бұрын
Ok so I took some classes over the summer before leaving for my exchange year and then my senior year I got a credit for an Italian exam I took (I worked with my school and counselor to transfer the credit so it would be accepted). I also had no blow off classes senior year so it was definitely a grind, but absolutely worth it and it taught me that hard work and a challenge makes you realize we're capable of so much more than we originally thought. Having exchange on a college application is a huge plus and will set you apart. You would apply the same way as anyone else though if you are going your junior year.

Hi! I have a question. I want to study abroad in France as I adore the language and culture, but if I am enrolled in a French school I’m worried about how I will understand French classes if I’m not fluent enough! I don’t want to do terrible in school just because I don’t understand the language but I also want to be immersed and have lots of practice time... Also, I’m really worried about how things will transfer back here. I am scared of leaving my home and my classes that I already have.

I'm 13 and I would love to be in Exchange student in Japan. Though i feel like Korean would be easier to learn considering my sister is fluent and lives there! Honestly I never really realized how much work goes into being and exchange student. Cause my dad is in the military so I had the privilege of geting to travel the world with him and not have to fill out days worth of paperwork. I realized a lot about the work and mental stability needed to be away for a whole year in a different country. I hoping my sister can help me out in that perspective considering she's been abroad for nearly 3 years now! Doing research now is super time consuming and learning Japanese is hard. But hopefully I can persevere through it and manage to convince my parents to let me try and do a exchange program.

Well if you can work that out with them and the school or you could go through the organization (they have paperwork and what not that allows you to get a visa and enroll in a school abroad). Anything is possible although this is the advantage of going through Rotary or EF.
Thank you for this video! I really want to be an exchange student in another country but I just started to the language and I want to graduate from my home school. I am considering it for my junior year
Im 5 years late but i love your editing sm
Hey so I’m interested in being a exchange student, I have some questions, how do you get money to buy things on your own and how would I be able to understand the teacher or write if I cant understand the language? Or use transport etc
@KennaBurke

Hi!! So with rotary we are given an allowance every month and can have a personal account which you can fund before or while abroad. In the beginning you won’t understand the language 😂😂 this is the hilarious part, and this is why we all end up learning the language so well is because were completely immersed into it. A lot of independent study and with rotary we had a weekly language course!

Kenna Burke thank you, helped a lot!
i got here after watching 3 of your videos in italian, it's so strange when you speak in eng, looks like another person ahahah
Thank you very much for this, Dove Camryn

How well do you have to know the language? Would completing the Duolingo thing be enough to get by when you first arrive?
@KennaBurke

Yes. You are not required to know the language when you arrive, but it will help you a lot in making friends
I have a question can you be an exchange student for more than a year?

Kenna Burke maybe more about the full Rotary experience, that it the organization I am most likely going to go with so I am interested in the little details that I may have to go through, thank you for replying! Edit: also maybe what it was like going to a country that spoke a whole other language! I am considering France but I’m a little concerned about the language barrier. Also, what factors impact the top 5 list, if any?
@KennaBurke
5 жыл бұрын
risa cantu RISA, Thank you for being so specific! Anyways the language barrier you can easily break down through the willingness to learn the language and culture. The top 5 list will be impacted by your choice and experience. You choose the top 5 list, although ultimately the Rotary club has the final say in where you go.
to be a exchange student, do u have to learn a language before highschool? (I didnt watch the whole video 😅)

Do grades play a big part in foreign exchange because as someone with adhd I have a hard time paying attention.
@KennaBurke

caio braga Your grades do not play as big a role as your character and willingness to be open. I knew a girl who made Cs and Ds and went on exchange. In short not so much. :)

I was celebrating when I heard you say you’re from Houston because I live there
Hi! Thanks so much for this video. It was really helpful! I was just wondering if you learned Italian before you went to Italy. And if you did, how you learned it? Also, how did you get you not lose credits from you American high school? I’m worried that if I did an exchange program I would have to re-do a semester or a year at my high school.
I know the question is weird, but I do have a lot of questions. First of all, Id love to thank you for your hard work and appreciate your efforts

山杜結城 Are you an American citizen as well? As long as you are, you just have to apply for a visa to stay in the country that you would exchange to! In regards to paying, everyone pays before going on exchange. Although many Rotary clubs do offer paying in segments before leaving! What you pay will cover your flight and insurance, this is why you have to pay before! And thank you very much I’m glad I was able to help you out in better understanding the process🤩

@@raidengamer1193 Ah, I must've read that wrong. Rotary is active in Egypt and I believe they have youth exchange as well. Do you know if there is a rotary club near you? This is what you would need to find out and if there is, contact them and ask for information about youth exchange. They could give you all of the details that are unique to their club!

How does this work with high school credit requirements?
@KennaBurke
5 жыл бұрын
Swervo This will be unique to everyone. Although most likely you will not get any credit for the year abroad. You might be able to get a language credit through an exam, which I did. You’ll have to talk to a counselor to figure out what credits you still require in order to graduate. For some this may mean an extra year of highschool to finish, for others you might be ahead in credits so you can still graduate on time. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

I wanna go to Korea cause I love the culture. I’ve love the food, the music, the education, the language, and EVERYTHING. I promise I’m not some obsessed koreaboo, I just admire the country even with all it’s flaws.
