I’m 18 now and it seems all my friends want in life is to make money. I understand that money is a necessity in today’s world but I don’t hold value to it in the way they do. While they dream about Wall Street, I dream about learning new skills and exploring the world. I’ve been called crazy but my utmost goal is to own a sailboat and take her around the world. Hopefully someday I’ll get it, hopefully someday soon.

This is AWESOME! And consider -- in living your dream, you will gain so much more of what we hope the money will bring us -- fulfillment, happiness, adventure. While others will get a feeling of adventure vicariously from watching the latest super hero movie, you'll get yours directly from actual experience. And in the end, you may write a book about your adventures that goes best-seller and make more money than all those who are striving for dollars =) By then, you will have learned to be happy without money, and money will be a wonderful benefit in your life, instead of something that you always strive for with hungry hands. You are on the right path my friend! =) Kenton

Fascinating! I love this idea of trees having a "song", and read an interesting book recently called "The Songs of Trees". As for the other subject, perhaps someday I'll look into such things, but right now I have no desire to grow. My goal is just to touch a few people deeply, and to keep my concentration on my family. With the devotion I give to family and students and the people I connect with through KZread and online, I really don't have even a spare moment =) The last thing I'd want is to fill my time with seeking something that would make me more mainstream or recognized. As it is, ReWildU is already sought out by people around the world, and we're getting featured more and more often in national publications (we were just in the Wall Street Journal, for instance). Besides, what we guide here probably fits under the umbrella of spirituality rather than education. Another aspect of what we do is that we don't have a curriculum or set teaching -- instead, we meet each person where they are, and create custom programming just for them. When working with someone struggling with addiction we customize a very different program than we do if someone is seeking a spiritual awakening, and again a very different program for the person who wants to learn "hard skills" to prepare for the future they fear will come. If a Christian comes, we help them connect more deeply with God. If a bushcrafter comes, we help them hone their skills under extreme conditions. If someone has social phobias, we help them to see other human beings in a new light. All the while, we ask people to softly explore their other boundaries. So the only reason I'm not responding is that is definitely not something I'm currently interested in. Perhaps the day will come when I'll look back over your comments and take some of your thoughts to heart! Thanks as always for your insight and humor! With love, Kenton =)

For myself it took getting a dog. I realized that my social programming was so very wrong. I got a dog. I put myself into my dogs head. Dogs do not dwell on past failures, Dogs do not plan for a future. Dogs live in the moment. That is when the adventures began for me. I let his natural instincts show me there was so much adventure all around me. I was an outdoors man, avid hunter and fisherman.I look back and see that, if I was successful at those things, it was based on showing off my catch or trophy to people. Now that I have found a new outlook.I only hunt for food, keep only the fish that I can eat and have no need to share my experiences with people, as like bragging. I think my ego is far less. I am a true adventurer and free from showing off what is my new life. Thanks Dude. I am happy that I am in good company with you and my fellow subscribers. Peace

Your presence here is incredibly appreciated. Each comment of yours that I read shares wisdom with everyone who reads it. This one was especially poignant for me. What a difference to hunt and fish for food and for the sheer experience, rather than that idea of showing things off. That you learned this in part from a non-human being, your marvelous canine friend, is even more inspiring for me. As someone who does his best to listen to nature's many voices, both human and non-human, it is super cool to connect with someone who can learn from a four-legged being! =) Kenton

I was in the Rockies, western slope , off grid and no cell phone service most of the time, with my dog, Jax, for 5 months straight. Summer 2017. We lived out of my truck and camper shell. My truck is my adventure vehicle. Where we stayed and got up into required massive 4X4 use many times.Only one night in a motel in Grand Junction( it is an open desert) I am 54 and was disabled by 49. and had some birth defects that qualified after 30 years working as a welder and at GE plastics. I am very fat, but lost 30 lbs. last summer living outdoors. I prefer over 9000' where it separates the RVs from the off road capable, and I can be temperature comfortable without AC or heat. Only 5 months, it is seasonal due to winter being brutal up there and the snow gets so, so very deep. That is my recent background. I am preparing to become a full time nomad. Peace

Too much uncertainty leads to anxiety, but too certainty leads to boredom. I think most people over compensate (including me). I need to change that because I crave adventure. When I was a child on an adventure my friends and I got lost a few time and I actually welcomed the challenge instead of fearing it. I have become to accustom to playing it safe and not "feeling alive". I remember well how alive I felt as a child and I want to feel like that again. It's not like I was a careless child, just carefree. I know the difference,I just need to realize it. Like you have said in pretty much every video and what I have known for a long time,it is all about mindset.I always thought I needed to change my mindset before I would be able to act,but watching your videos makes me realize that I just need to taking action to start to change that mindset. We are like Pavlov's dog,we are all about conditioning.

My first experience backpacking in the wilderness gave me a great sense of adventure. I was filled with this sense of letting go, a sort of awareness that I wasn't tied down by any social norms or safety nets. In many ways nature has become a place of comfort and relaxation for me, which is good, but I also think I need to make an effort to put myself in situations where I take one more step and do things outside of my comfort zone. Thanks for all these inspirational videos.

This just made me realise that it's maybe only natural that young kids get addicted to video games after sitting all day long on your ass at school only to come home to repeat the same stuff you heared all day for a test then to go to bed and the only time off you have is usually filled with memorizing what you have learned at school. So basically you have no adventure and you get bored, but when you play a video game it opens ways to adventure you are not expierencing in your life and you get addicted. At the same time this video is also a very good example of helping people who are addicted to movies or games to show them you can create your adventure yourself. Again you have done a great job here and your imagination reminds me of peter pan for some reason . Think happy thoughts :D!

I'm 37 years old (nearly 38 now) and I have fought in Iraq, I have deployed to Bosnia to help keep peace, I have hunted both bow and rifle. I have ALWAYS been drawn to the woods and mountains, in fact even though I lived in the city for long periods as a kid I ALWAYS found myself taking myself to the woods... ANY woods. And I'd be out there from daylight until dusk when there wasn't school, chores, or other things to be done. I have been an Infantryman, and it's taken it's toll on me. My mind isn't as it used to be, lots of demons now. My heart doesn't sing much anymore, not even for my wonderful wife and children. My body creaks and snaps and pops, little pains happen all over, and yet I'm not ready to give up. These days I again have been looking toward the mountains and the woods. Just for the want to explore if nothing else. I've been working toward learning some more primitive means of doing things and teaching my kids how to... Spot animals, interpret animal (and human) tracks, SHOOTING (very important) with a firearm (and all safety that goes with it), how to see the natural world as a wonderful place to visit if one can't live there. I'm not ready to give up fighting. ;) In fact, I'm just getting started!! Thank you for posting your video's. A sense of adventure in all things is something we all need.

I'm really inspired by what you've written, StonedPatriot. With what you've experienced, it would be easy to give up to those demons, to those aches that are infiltrating your body at what seems like too young an age. Yet I hear you being active in making a shift. A powerful shift. Your family needs you, and the world needs you -- needs that kind of inspiration, that can see a human beaten down by things we shouldn't have to see or experience, yet not give up. I hope that everyone around you can see what you're doing, can acknowledge both your pain and your courage to meet that pain. I know I'm inspired. Kenton

I think everyone is surrounded by virtual limits established by education and society. People uses alcoholic drinks (some even worst use drugs) to feel themselves free of those limits (or even actually brake them - which ends up in trouble). I agree that 'exploring adventure' can give us the same confidence and freedom feeling without the need of alcohol or drugs but even better with the compensation of true-happiness feelings. Thanks man I really needed this video to help me out of this situation I find myself in where I'm really doing nothing just mindlessly seeking comfort and I've realized that I need to just let go do things that I want to do like going outside going on hikes and the such. Also thanks for the video on how to acclimate to the cold since I'm moving to a cold state in the US.

I like it! I think there's great wisdom in that quote. So often people think survival is about toughing it out, but we're so much better able to function when we can actually shift our underlying definitions of comfort, so that even if we're cold, hungry, etc. we don't interpret it as discomfort that we have to fight through. Students at ReWildU often start to say that they even begin to enjoy sensations such as hunger -- it actually makes food taste better! =)

As listeners to a certain right-wing radio guy might say, "Long time viewer, first time commenter". Love the concept. My outdoor adventuring days are pretty much behind me, as age & health issues continue to mount. But you have reminded me that "adventure" is as much a state of mind as it is an activity. For the first time in a long time, my mind is perking up with some ideas to try out. Hope my wife likes some of the stuff I'm gonna try in the kitchen LOL! Thanks and God bless Ron

Very interesting! I was already coming to the role play idea already. The best thing about realizing this is that now you can start to choose your own role rather than one the society handed you. I've seen videos by a bunch of people who /choose/ to live in their vans and RV's. They stepped outside of the role of "renter" or "homeowner" to seek their own role to play. Excellent video.

I am now back from my adventure and I shall tell how you it went! Since I'm going to work tomorrow and have to get up early I wasn't about to go on a super long adventure, just wanted to go for a short hike in the wood and explore. I live in Sweden and the forrests are beauitufl in autumn, and it was about 15 degrees celcius. I was instantly drawn deeper and deeper into the forrest and before I knew it I was climbing mountains and jumping over creeks. I also found a walking stick which was extremly useful. About 2 hours into my adventure I found a pretty large river, and I wanted to get to the other side of it. There was some logs going over to the other side but they were very slippery and narrow. I got about halfway just fine but then I slipped a little bit and lost my footing and fell (on my feet though) into the river. I was completely soaked from feet up to my chest. At the instance of falling I kind of panicked, a lot of thoughts went through my head at once. Things like "I have my cellphone in my pocket" and "now my nice forest clothes will get all wet and muddy" and "It will be freezing in the water!". But when I actually fell into the water I actually fell a sense of releif. All my fears kind of vanished, and now I REALLY was free to explore without being afraid of getting dirty or muddy or "destroy my clothes" or anything like that (P.S my cellphone survived!). So I actually made a small fire and hung my clothes to dry there while I kept exploring in my underwear! I found that beeing barefoot really gives you great footing, and now I could cross the river on the logs without any probelms at all! Strangely enough I didn't feel cold at all, even though I usually feels cold in those sorts of temperatues even when wearing clothes! Overall I think the adventure went great and I am actcually glad that I fell in the water. It gave me perspective on some things. I know that this might not seem like a big deal to you but to me this was a big eye opener. Can't wait for my next adventure next weekend!

This is AWESOME James! Crossing rivers brings back so many good memories -- there is something so adventurous about standing on one side and trying to plot one's way to the other! What I especially love is that you fell in but turned it into such a positive experience. That's the true adventure spirit! And oddly, it's those "bad things" that we end up remembering most fondly and talking about around the campfire. I love that you found the "stickiness" of bare feet! So many times I have found the same -- the shoes come off, and suddenly I'm WAY more grippy! Wow, thanks for taking the time to share with me. I really appreciate it! With love, Kenton =)

Hey Mister! This is a really great video and can relate to quite a few points- I always wanted to get into Reenacting but never could find a group- and I’m really shy and sort of a recluse, but I have my uniform and flintlock I made myself I make my own clothes as well. When I get out in the woods in my full uniform and cloak during a snowstorm- I feel like I’m out on patrol or marching through the woods ready for a ambush or keeping low and quiet to observe the woods as if I was really back then. It always makes a trip to the woods all the more memorable! Thank you for the absolutely outstanding video!

When I was a kid, the cars my parents owned were seldom reliable. Being stranded on the side of the road because the engine's boiling over and having to scramble down a bank to get water from a creek was not, according to my mum, a "setback" or a "problem", it was an "adventure". Now I'm grown, my kids and I have had similar adventures...

Okay, to have a parent like that -- awesome! And now you're following in her example, inspiring your children to the same spirit. I think that's so valuable -- instead of seeing every setback as a reason to complain or give up, setbacks become welcome challenges that we meet with a spirit of creativity. I'd like to see every child getting that message from their parents. Way to go!

Great tips! My plan is to go in the forest and pretend that it's just me and the wilderness. I will have to rely on myself because there is nobody else who can help me survive. This will allow me/force me improve my skills and go through some pains without being tempted to quit when I encounter the smallest thing that would be an inconvenience to my usually regular life, or any other danger that takes me out of my comfort zone. It's scary but also exciting because it allows me to put myself in a frame of mind that would help me improve, nevertheless.

@@ReWildUniversity Oh, you can be sure I will! Atm we're trying to save money to buy land. We've been looking for a piece of land for a while but we haven't found it yet (plus we need more savings). We want more land in one place, with spring and forest on the land, so we can grow our own food, etc. I was planning to go hiking more and hopefully later this year or early next spring we would buy some land and expand our knowledge and skills, but who knows what will happen with this virus. Atm, I'm working on getting my first kids picture book published (Pash and the Blue Bicycle). Trying to focus on positive things. I've had this particular story/book in the works for ~5 years and I really hope and try my best to make it this year. My illustrator is currently working on the watercolors.🤗 Yesterday we picked the colors for the main characters (well, we're pretty close on deciding on all of the colors for the two of them😅). So adventures can have different shapes. But about the forest adventure - I really feel like the call of the wild is taking over me. I've been binging on bush craft videos in the last few days. I'm not the most crafty and resourceful person, but I would love to be able to focus on that more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! I love the wild drums and other instruments as you open this video! So many times I try to do the safe thing and stay comfortable. I'm sure I've seen this before but to me it's worth checking out again. I see the grandkids trying things that I wouldn't. And then we tell them to be careful or show them some of the things that can go wrong and scare them back into being "safe." Like an eight year old loving a small battery CHAIN SAW. He loved it until he got it on a bind and then watched his uncle getting shaken all over by the much bigger heavier "real" chain saw. Suddenly a game on a screen was enough adventure! I think I am more adventurous than many little old ladies dealing with all of my everyday stuff which is now including do I call in hospice to help care for mom. Seems like there's never an end. I claim I don't have time for adventure but I think that's why I have to get out in my garden every day and interact with my cats who refuse to follow my script for them! Love as always!

I've already share this as a tool for tree people that agreed with you. I like your work. Soon there will be more people that wish to rewild ther life, and this will be thank's to you. Great video as always bro. Very helpful. Shared! I actually emulated your FireSteel test by sitting out in the snow and striking while freezing. Gives you a new perspective and helps prepare for when the SHTF. I have 3 bulging herniated discs, have had 400 kidney stones or so in 6 years, and a lot of other problems and weight gain that came from being incapacitated. In physical therapy now for many hours a week, working in the gym a minimum of 10 hours a week, and slowly getting back to where I want to be. My goal has been to go camping, survival gear testing, and just "adventuring" I suppose in the Paris Mountain State park here in Greenville, SC this summer. You are right that goals really help. Thanks for this video. It helps fortify my thoughts on proceeding through the pain. I use this poem written by a Navy SEAL to also inspire me: “Fighting On” I see no gleam of victory alluring No chance of splendid booty or of gain If I endure - I must go on enduring And my reward for bearing pain - is pain Yet, though the thrill, the zest, the hope are gone Something within me keeps me fighting on

Such an inspiring story, my friend. This is EXACTLY the adventurer spirit. It can be so easy, especially when we're confronted with a suite of obstacles such as the ones you're describing, that leave us with chronic pain, to just give up. I hope others read this and are inspired by your situation and your spirit. There are so many of us who feel that it would be easier to just surrender, and even if we go on, the best we can do is to just "stick it out" and suffer through. But to find that spark, to move forward with zest even though there is no promise of an end to the pain -- that is the beauty of the human spirit, and the essence of adventure. You have my deep respect, and it's my belief that you'll be surprised at the difference it makes to get out and do the things you're speaking of. Bravo!

Learning is a great way to overcome physical and mental pain. Thanks again for your reply, kind words, and excellent videos! You have a great message and I think this is the path I want to walk. Well, my adventure has been slowed a bit. A recent CATSCAN showed a mass on one if my kidneys and lesions on both..and two kidney stones in both. That said, I found a good doctor I think who said something pretty profound, " worrying won't help at all, nor add one day to your life. Whatever we find, I will fix it." So, while pain and certain issues have debilitated me a bit, I intend to get back to it next week. Might have to go slower than planned, but no point worrying or stopping completely. Besides, as you pointed out, I can still do daily challenges. Mundane things even such as cleaning a room that I've put off cleaning, talking to someone I try to avoid, or going places I normally avoid. Those things will require little physical energy. Thanks again! -Jon

Bro, now your talking about d&d? Your becoming one of my favorites, it sounds nuts but you asking to become a ranger is exactly what I do, I often think I'm on these huge fantasy treks & at any moment I might see a gnome or a elf. I really think people that are into rpg's would love this sport, you get an inventory full of cool items to take with you it's really like a lot of the survival games they play. Not sure if you still into d&d but my best buddy irl is WASD20, if your ever up to a d&d survival game I'm sure I could get him to toss something together some kind of survival focused one shot. Cheers for the videos, right now I'm just trying to watch as much as I can from you. My plan I think is to slowly start a series of overnights where each overnight I take one less item to where I get to nothing, your winter no clothes video was just nuts man, seeing you literally on top of the fire like a cave man trying to get warm was mind blowing. Love to see you do a video on how to stay warm without a fire, were moving into a burn ban season here so the plan would be once it goes away this fall I could then have shed tons of items and possibly be able to do a 0 gear overnight. Thank you so much man, I watch a lot of youtube but only once in a while do I truly learn & leave being inspired to do more.

OK, my Friend, this is as much as I have found. Just signed up for your newsletter but since I'm on a ReWildUniversity binge I'm putting it in my comments here in case this reaches you sooner. I'm a bit of an adventurer . . . just a bit! Saturday, November 11, 2006 Pema Chodron on Barriers vs. Boundaries I think that I have been given faulty information on what constitutes good boundaries over the years, so it's refreshing to read Pema Chodron's take on it. Too often, "having good boundaries" is about closing oneself off to alternate or conflicting information. Chodron sees this as setting up barriers rather than having healthy boundaries. BOUNDARIES VERSUS BARRIERS Pema ChödrönTransforming Confusion into Wisdom City Retreat | Berkeley Shambhala Center Fall 1999 Let me address this question of: What's the difference between dissolving the barriers and setting good boundaries? This came up in some of the discussion groups, and this question also comes up -you won't be surprised- in many of the places where I do this teaching. I've given this some thought -and I've heard a lot of other people's views on this too, so I've been educated by other people's thinking on this. Currently, this is my answer, and I'm sure it's a work in process. I feel that setting boundaries, good boundaries -the intention of that- is to allow for communication to happen. And, barriers are shutting down communication. To set good boundaries takes a lot of courage. And you have to be going through this process of acknowledging your pain, and also what triggers you, and acknowledging how much you can handle and how much you can't handle. Theres already a lot of courage that's gone on in coming to the place of setting boundaries. But, the intention is to make communication clearer. *** A barrier is this turning away and staying stuck. There's ignorance involved in barriers. Maybe that's one of the main ingredients of the ego and the self-centeredness, or the barriers, cocoon- however you say it- is ignorance: not really looking at what's going on. When we set a clear boundary, we are clear within ourselves on where we stand. We can hear conflicting information, opposing points of view, and not feel threatened or shaken. We feel centered. But many of us confuse clear boundaries with setting up barriers, with just saying, "This is what I believe, so leave me alone." This position is closed to new information, new perspectives, or to the natural flow of change. If feels safe because it protects the ego from having to risk exposure to a different way of being. But if we are truly centered in what we know and believe, we do not feel threatened by alternate views. We may even be open to hearing what others think with the stance that maybe there is something to learn. I have found myself setting up barriers in some parts of life, and I have struggled with others who confuse barriers for clear boundaries. While I try to maintain an open mind, there are still things my ego doesn't want to hear. And this is why I meditate, so that I can see those moments when my ego is feeling threatened while they are happening instead of allowing myself to get defensive and fall into barrier creation.

Just finished my first outdoor night experience alone in the woods and it was really annoying. Due to lack of preparation I had a hammock with mosquito net with me, but no chord to tie it to the trees. It was very dark already, so I looked for the next even space and lay down in my bivi bag with some sleeping bag inlet, using my backpack for a pillow. Of course I didn´t lite any fire, so the mosquitos were really pestering me, but that got better when light faded completely. Unfortunately I wasn´t far enough away from town and still heard the noise of traffic. But there was very much noise in the woods as well. Squirrels crying all the time, mice, birds, the quick steps of some black bugs and some constant noise that sounded like small raindrops - - it took until 3 a. m. till I noticed, an ants´ strait led some inches past my feet. So I moved backwards a bit, lying even more uncomfortable than before. I wanted to drink some water and realized that the bottle must have opened somehow. There was not a single drop in it and the backpack - my pillow - was wet. I got some headache, because I had been sweating a lot. I was just lying there, desperately waiting for the dawn. But it was all worth it when hearing the awakening of the wood. Never in my life I had heard so many different bird voices, although it sometimes seemed, all the noise came from the same singer. That was really fascinating. I will do this again - take some rope with me next time and some other bottle and all will be perfect :D Gonna get some sleep now...bye

Another great video! Thanks! I admire and respect what you are doing here. I think there is a childlike sense of wonder and curiosity that keeps us exploring, and that the idea of "growing up" often entails leaving those things behind, but I believe growth and maturity and wisdom Require the constant renewal and enrichment and expansion of our awareness and understanding, which can only be achieved with the openness of mind and heart that comes With that curiosity and wonder, and that sense of adventure!! Within, we are all trees, and the truth we find through our experience of life is like the sun; it is the light by which we grow. Life itself is a grand and wonderful adventure, and so many uncharted places await within us. To never grow up just means to never stop growing! keep up the good work. :) Gabriel

:)! Its just about the connection isn't it? Hunter-gatherers never thought negatively about the wilderness, and in most cases never even had a word for it! Only with the emergence of agriculturally based societies has wilderness gotten a bad wrap. We definitely need to revive the connection between man and nature, and stop stigmatizing the wild places. We need to return to the sacred cycles, and to being a part of rather than apart from the natural ecology. We are losing so much cultural and biological diversity in a kind of mass homogenization, and it breaks my heart to think of all the ecosystems, traditions, skills, and practices which developed over thousands of years being lost. Thank you for what you do. the world needs more people like you my friend. Gabriel

Awesome!! mid-14c., enspiren, "to fill (the mind, heart, etc., with grace, etc.);" also "to prompt or induce (someone to do something)," from Old French enspirer (13c.), from Latin inspirare "inflame; blow into" (see inspiration), a loan-translation of Greek pnein in the Bible.
