HOW to become a world class goalkeeper
Спорт
Is there such a thing as the perfect goalkeeper DNA? A set of characteristics that make the man and woman between the posts perfect? Yes, if you believe the German FA DFB and its experts. They are fighting to ensure that Germany remains the country of goalkeepers.

As a shorter than average GK who made it to the starting XI, for those who are like me you need to perfect your positioning. Granted it will be very hard to reach the top level of football without being a tall goalkeeper, you can still become an intermediate goalkeeper and enjoy a starting position in a national league if your positioning is correct. Reflexes, passing, and other attributes are important of course but to make up for your height disadvantage positioning is key followed closely by athletecism (especially jumping and diving). Most importantly believe in yourself and don't let others tell you what's possible. I've had 2 coaches advise me to switch to midfield as a young kid as they believed I could not become a goalkeeper at my height. I went on to make the starting team, win national tournaments and leagues, and even finish top 3 in regional tournaments. Good luck. I believe in you.

I'm reminded of Anna Maria Picarelli (5-4 / 1.63 m). Of course, height helps in this position, but being shorter should not cause coaches to not even consider goalkeepers solely for that reason. There are other factors that play pivotal roles in making a good goalkeeper, such as everything that you said.

You're making an excellent point, because as far as I know, goalkeepers need to be at least 6 feet (roughly 182 cm) tall. My height is approximately 172 cm, yet I did not let this hold me back from playing in the position. The attributes that make an excellent keeper in my opinion (regardless of height) are: [A] Athleticism (explosiveness and strength mainly), reflex swiftness, distribution and [B] positioning, communication, leadership, authority, decisiveness, courage and resilience. Playing as a goalkeeper is definitely not for the faint hearted because the majority simply won't feel comfortable with the idea of deliberately hitting the ground and standing in front of a 50 mph flying projectile and stopping it with their hands. Goalkeepers are underrated till this day, but there is a change in the wind I sense. Cheers and to all of those who play or even aspire to stand in goal, raise up your chin and BE PROUD because you're EXCEPTIONAL!

I never had the chance to join a football academy but from the age of 8 to 14 played like neymar and Messi combined age then didn't play football for 7yrs straight if I get the chance I should try to be a keeper cuz I'm better than neuer with my feet. Maybe I should be a keeper than a winger
As a short (173cm / 5'7) male GK, I found that develop a strong flexible "click" with my CBs, LB, and RB are the key of success for bastion-fort building.

Same height. You to short to make it. Be a left or right back
Speed, reaction time and managing your defenders.

To say that Neuer change the game with his ball skill is such and overstament. Look at Higuita from Colombia in the 90's, or the Mexican goalie Campos or even Chilavert from Paraguay.
