    Thank you for watching, and for your comments! Yes, the majority of FULL TIME racers - those who compete for the FULL SCHEDULE each year - like I did, tend to be self employed because yes, it requires a lot of freedom over your time, and money. But ANYONE can go through the steps to obtain a Race License, and most organizations only require you do a minimum of 2 races a year, as well as complete your annual physical exams, to maintain a license! I would never want to discourage someone who loves cars and racing from believing, and making the sacrifices necessary to realize their dreams. Believe me, I started with nothing, barely squeaking out of high school, and if I can do it, anyone can! Hope to see you out there!

    I would love to hear back from some of the 22,000 people who have viewed this video so far! If you’re asking about me, I earned the most points in the championship for my class in 2016, which was my second full year. As my kids have grown, I do not want to be away from them 4 months out of the year, so aside from a few races here and there, I can be found at Circuit of The Americas, the Formula 1 race track in Austin, Texas where I instruct each month. Thanks again for watching and for checking back! 🏁

    At some point you’ll definitely need money. Sponsorship is of course the most desirable way, and as you said, for most people will require a ton of door knocking. But before anyone will give you a penny to sponsor you, they’re going to want to see that you are winning. So yeah, you’ll need to do things like in this video! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your experience!

    Thank you for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I hope you have an opportunity to take advantage of the information I covered! Each organization has different rules, primarily dictated by the terms of their insurance policy. If one group won’t allow you, I’d advise you to try another. AutoCross will usually have more relaxed requirements since the speeds are lower and there is generally nothing to hit. Also, your previous experience plays a part in the decision. For example there are 15 year old racers (and younger!) in series like Spec Miata, but those drivers would have typically won shifter kart championships. Have fun, stay safe and I hope to see you out there!

    Frankly, I am not aware of another video like that out there, which is why I made this one. Once you have followed the steps in this video, you will want to reach out to your local NASA region, and find out when their next competition license class is. This is usually a weekend-long event, that you sign up for, and upon successful completion, will have a rookie competition license. You will be required to place a large, orange square on the back of your car for your first eight races, and cannot have any contact during that time. Racing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! Good luck, Thomas.

    Can you make a living doing competition racing? Or what is the best way to make money racing?

  • @GTSCarLife

    @GTSCarLife

    5 ай бұрын

    Hi! Yes, it is possible and there are certainly people worldwide who in fact make their living as drivers. But keep in mind, in sales 20% of the people make 80% of the money. In real estate, it is the top 5% that are successful. Music, acting, athletics, they all have similarly small percentages of people at the top.So to make a living solely as a race car driver, you need to work your way to being clearly better than most of the others trying to accomplish the same. Having said that, I know drivers who supplement their income by being drivers and coaches, as well as working as drivers for auto manufacturers and high performance rental companies. If you want it bad enough, there will be a way. Or you can decide to go the route that so many professional drivers do, and pay for a seat. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your comments. Hope to see you out there!

    I don’t disagree with buying someone’s used project. But majority of the time the work is hack. And you say don’t build yourself because it could cost 100k at a shop, so that isn’t building yourself. But I agree to that extent. But if you have the ability and resources to build your own car why wouldn’t you. The experience and knowledge and getting intimate with it brings you a lot of knowledge of the car and how things work on track.

  • @GTSCarLife

    @GTSCarLife

    I agree, for people who have the ability AND the knowledge to do it right and in compliance with series regulations, building it yourself can be very rewarding. However, very few people actually have the tools, space, knowledge and ability to do it correctly and to be certain it meets all regulations. And even then, buying all the parts will still cost far more than buying a used race car. Thanks for watching!

    Do you have any advice for the females to get into racing? I want to be able to hang with the guys and also hold my own and push them. I just enjoy being behind a wheel, the sound of the engine and being one with the car and just going for it yet I haven’t found any female that has done that . Thanks so much for your help in advance! -Emma

    Yes, I do. The exact same advice as for the guys. I have raced against women in California, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. They can be outstanding, even better than most men because of their attention to detail. Where do you live? My advice would be to go for it! Follow your heart. Be Fast, Stay Safe and chase your dreams! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your questions.

    @lovedove09100 I got my start with NASA SoCal. There were a few women drivers there - Ariel Crawford and her teammate who drove Scions for Crawford. Here in the DFW area there are several more and one in particular that I know well and have great respect for. We used to race against each other in the GTS class. She’s still at it and very competitive. NASA is a great way to get started ! Hope to see you out there!

    Understand. Most of the F1 guys start karts at age 6, and get signed around 15. In all major series, it’s definitely desirable to start young so a team can build a brand around a driver for many years. Still, hope you get out there and have some fun! 🏁

    In reality, it's a sport where if you want to be a successful driver, you have to grow up in a racing family, have connections, or have the money to finance it. Or all three. Are there stories where someone has little money and becomes a successful driver. Sure. But they are the exception. As one person told me, it's really trust fund sport, much like riding horses.

    Formula 1, yes. But not racing in general. My video is how to go about getting a race license. What you do with it up to the driver. Certainly you will need to develop yourself to be a top talent, and you will either need to attract sponsors or be so competitive that a team is willing to pay for what you have. I payed my own way, won some races and earned the most points in a season my second full year. Most importantly, I met some wonderful people, learned so much and had a great time! Never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot accomplish if you want it bad enough! Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts!

    even if I wished for the money and somehow got it, I'm too old and broken. People like me that can drive with a high skill level get to watch just ok drivers race all the time.... because they were born rich or somehow got rich... not a option for me , I was born poor and broken, so my chance of driving a racecar that wasn't stolen is slim... Very Slim! I hate to feel like I do but I am a damn great driver, I'll never get to see how good thanks to being disabled due to my back shaped like a slip-in-slide! Oh I can still drive but I will never get to Race in a Racecar.... because I can't make enough money. I hate me, if I didn't want something then it wouldn't matter if it isn't meant for me!
