A Notary’s role is to protect the public. Notaries verify a signer’s identity, confirm they are aware of what they plan to sign, and that they are not being pressured to sign a document.
New York Notary applicants must be 18 or older, be of good moral character, live or work in New York state, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, have the equivalent of a “common school education”, and have no disqualifying offenses on their record. If you meet all necessary requirements, you’re ready to get started.
Here are the important steps it takes to become a Notary Public in NY:
1. Meet the state's eligibility requirements.
2. Learn New York's Notary Public License Law.
3. Take the exam and provide your ID and thumbprints.
4. Receive your test pass slip in the mail.
5. Complete the Notary application and have your oath of office notarized.
6. Mail your notarized application, original test pass slip, and application fee to the Department of State Division of Licensing Services.
7. If you’re approved, your commission ID card will be sent via mail.
8. Buy your required Notary journal and official New York Notary stamp.
