Learn how to get your Notary Public commission with our step-by-step guide.
Applicants for a Notary Public commission must be at least 18 years old, be a citizen or permanent legal resident of the U.S., and be a resident or primarily employed in the state of Indiana.
They must also possess an Indiana driver's license, Indiana non-driver identification card or other acceptable form of ID to prove Indiana residence, or possess proof of employment in the state of Indiana.
Applicants who hold a lucrative federal or state government office or have a criminal conviction with a sentence exceeding six months imprisonment are not qualified for a commission.
Steps to become an Indiana Notary Public:
1. Make sure you meet all qualifications under Indiana state law.
2. Buy a $25,000 surety bond.
3. Get an Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History Record. You'll
have 30 days to complete the rest of these steps.
4. Go to the Indiana Secretary of State's website to create an account.
5. Pay the $75 application fee.
6. Take the state-required education course and pass the exam.
7. Complete the Notary Public application form.
8. Upload your bond certificate as well as an image of your signature.
9. Receive your Notary Public commission.
10. Buy your official Notary seal and fee schedule.
While an errors and omission (E&O) insurance is not required, it’s strongly recommended to prevent you from costly lawsuits should a claim be made.
