I used to be reluctant to borrow ideas from other players because I didn't want to be unoriginal. What I didn't realize was EVERY great player you've ever heard is a collection of ideas they've acquired from different players that they listened to. It's all about rearranging and presenting it tastefully. Excellent and helpful video.
"If I should lose you" at chet barker's tempo, is a classy song !
Hi Dan, I've been to a few of your videos over the years but wanted to say thanks. You have a really accessible teaching style - great hearing how you work through coming up with basslines. I'm a beginner/intermediate player and it's encouraging to see the creativity part demystified. The videos also have a good pace for people know some theory but don't know how to jump into playing the good stuff right away, Thanks for all your hard work and I'll definitely explore your channel some more!

Yeah - Dan bridges all of the nuances of playing bass that other's demonstrate so fast and so abstract, good luck learning from it.

Dan! Just started playing bass again, I’m a drummer and have played some bass on and off for some periods (over 20 years). This time I really want to learn it from the ground. Your lessons are wonderful!! Thanks! 😊

Great lesson as always, Dan. My little question for you (or anyone who knows a straight answer) would be: when the chord is for example Am, how freely can one use the 7ths, 9ths, 11ths or 13ths? Whenever I try to craft at least a riff in those basic chords I try to be a purist and not add any notes that don't strictly belong there unless they're the passing tones or chromatic. I feel like it's a wrong instinct and yet the purist in me says that I shouldn't change the color of the chord, or else... hehehe

I say let go of being a purist! There are no rules and it’s down to what works, what fits, what sounds good. Listen to great players and see what they do. Copy that and eventually you’ll develop a style you like. You can always keep it simple…or not (!). Up to you.
Thank you for all of these lessons. My main problems are, playing with a metronome, as soon as it starts my brain and fingers don't seem co-rdinated any more! Reading from manuscript, getting my left hand onto the correct fret, my right hand onto the correct string and last but by no means least, playing in time. I love jamming and creating bass lines but when it comes to reading music, playing the correct notes and the correct string and in time I find very difficult. I play 5 string because the MD of our band likes the LOW Eb, D and C and especially that sonorous low B. Any ideas on how I may improve this reading, playing correctly and in time, any help would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes.

I find it helps to work on them individually and then (unfortunately) there’s no shortcut - it’s doing it a lot. Every day if possible. It’s amazing how quickly it comes together but only with that consistency…

@@OnlineBassCourses Thank you Dan, I have really slowed everything right down. Slowly, slowly step by step and listening to the regular beat of the metronome until I can hear it and feel it without panicking. Best regards.
Hey Dan, here another question for you. If I practice one of you exercises, when I come to the 17th fret to the 19th fret on the A string ( not even the E ) your exercise say that my pinky press the D on the 17th or E on the 19th fret but I can’t reach it. I adjust the position of my hand so I can reach the note with my ring finger. Is that my lack of experience or do you have the same problem? Maybe cause my fender p bass has a thick nek? That is my biggest problem with my bass the rest is perfect. Greetings

Hi Wim. Which exercise are you referring to? I have hundreds! If it’s written that way then that’s probably how I’d play it. But, if your bass doesn’t allow you access for whatever reason, it’s not a problem at all to adapt your technique. A thick bass neck would probably make it more difficult. Feel free to adapt my exercises.
