I'm most likely creating a small discord community of people who are interested in art + business where we can get together and talk about growth, finances, marketing, and connect with other creators + new business owners for collaborations and mentorships. This is literally what I've been wanting to do for a while now but never had the courage to do so... basically I've been working for over 3 years a job I hate (a """"""developer"""""" job, note the quotes), on the other hand 3D art has been my therapy during this time and basically kept me from literally going crazy; now I decided starting next year I'll quit my full time job as a programmer so I can try my luck doing this on my own. I guess my biggest issue is myself. I have the talent and from the few clients I had, I've always taken gigs I'm 10000% capable of delivering. Its just I get so much anxiety and I tell myself I can't do it so I don't do it. Everyone tells me my work is so good, but what they don't see is my internal struggle. Idk maybe all I need is some therapy. If anyone has any tips in getting over this, I'd love to hear it. Edit: this post is 2 years old... I'm doing exceptionally great these days. Man, I can't tell ya how much I appreciate your financial independence as an artist videos. I'm a 2D artist and I'm a point in my life where I want to pursue freelance work and support myself from it. I have day job at the moment, but my biggest obstacles are finding the mental energy after work to make a professional level portfolio and having quality pieces to put myself out there. That's one of his tactics. He's on the edge of "clickbait" and uses every opportunity to promote and advertise himself . But his videos deliver good content, so Im not even mad. I respect the fight for money.

I've been a free-lancer for 8 years, I'm in a slump right now and no amount of experience can tell you when life puts you in a spot of scarcity. Thank you so much for the advice, these videos are very stress relieving, because it presents the current issues in a way that someone going through a hard time free-lancing can understand it, and go through them step by step.

Glad to hear I’m on the right track doing most of the same steps. I’ve been steadily doing illustration work for local writers along with commissioned art and logos for businesses on the side and developing new skills along the way that I never thought I’d need. Haven’t jumped on to the websites you mentioned yet since book illustrating is very time consuming and I have to hold on to my part time job so trying to make sure my plate isn’t too full.

This is the most informative video on professional freelancing I've watched yet. Most just show your options and good websites but you show how to do things outside of websites and freelancing platforms. This video also tells you how to put yourself in that professional mindset and I really appreciate it.

This is a nice video. I'm still in school, but I have always wondered about what happens after school, especially if you don't get hired by a company right out of graduation. This gives a pretty good, easy to follow overview of how I could get started. Thanks!

This is great! I see a lot of artists myself included struggle starting out to get work and stay stable. Much of it comes from fear of not being good enough. They forget you have to start somewhere.

As a personal anecdote, I have been working toward launching my career in programming and artificial intelligence for a number of years (no formal training). I started doing some Fiverr gig work last fall, and it really picked up quickly. I still have much to learn, but it is just a huge boost of confidence to work with clients and establish myself formally as more than just a hobbyist. I'm going to try doing some art on their soon... One thing I can recommend is to do market research (how many people are competing to provide service X vs Y vs Z) and choose a niche carefully.

currently working a tech job myself. While I don't have much history with 3d or animation, it's still been my dream from childhood. Thank you immensely for these tips on freelancing I'm hoping I can begin this side business and build it into the "Empire" as you say!

Thanks! I may lose my full-time job as an engineer so I'm trying to figure how much money I can make as a freelance artist. So far I've made about $2500 over four different jobs on the side since I started a year and a half ago. I would probably need to make 10-15 times that to support myself and my wife.

I'm glad that I watched this, I've wanted to get into the 3D art space for quite a while, a lot of MAJOR life events happened and I found myself with my life turned upside down and unemployed. I decided I wanted to give my business a chance to focus in on 3D and 3 commissions later here I am. I'm still scared, this is still new, very new, but I don't wanna ever have to go back to having anyone over me and the freedom that I've got now.

I have been freelancing for about a year now, and only have had 2 major jobs this year. I have been trying to update my portfolio weekly, applying to places, and even got my 100th rejection email this past week for the year. People keep saying everyone is hiring, and I have been applying, so why does it feel like myself and others aren't getting jobs?

Your videos are very helpful, but my a** still clenches with the thought of freelance. I started as a freelancer, worked 2-3 years, but I hated it, not because of the subject, but because of the company aaaand...the extreme pressure of "will I make it next month" I kinda worked full time for those guys, but...as a freelancer. I had the same amount of projects / tasks and pay every month, but I knew I'm on the edge, because ya know...no contracts. Now I'm full time, and I hate it even more. I have to wake up at 07:00 AM...nope. I skyrocketed in 3D for 6 months. From a person with 5 hours in Blender, now I'm a person with a thousand hours in Blender and I'm leveling up this s*** like crazy, I never expected it was THAT easy. My only issue is that I'm not sure I'm...technical enough. Yeah, my stuff looks really nice, but is it optimized? Is my topology good enough? Do I understand UVs and texturing and maps ENOUGH? That's what's stopping me. Once I feel comfortable with my technical skills (because I got the visual part, that's what I'm good at, visuals and design) I'll starts with mashing both freelance and full time, until my freelance is strong enough so I can leave. I see my current job as..."well...those people are actually paying me...to learn 3D". And it's good ya know, if I was not so competitive, to want to be better than their best artist (he was mostly doing 3D) I was probably not going to start learning 3D anytime soon...but because of this job, I did. So that's something :D

Spent ages in college. Got an office job which I worked for like 2 years. Been unemployed for almost a year now, but started drawing again. I barely drew in the last decade. Haven't had this much fun in for last decade either. Still suck at drawing though, but I'm definitely improving and working on building an audience.

this came at the perfect time for me as I'm on leave from my day job and have been focusing on my growth as an artist. I know I have some skills that I've labored on and still know I need time to improve. How do I market myself when I know I am not at the same level as others? simply writing it off as "I'm a new professional artist" seems weak in my head. I have had a few commissioned clients so I know I have something but guess I'm not confident in some of my anatomical work.

Since you don't have many clients yet, you can market it with the angle that 'you can devote 100% of your time, energy and emotion to their project' since you're not bogged down with multiple clients. You can argue that overall, commissioning you would be a better investment than someone who has a backlog of work.

He didn't even bother to mention the MAIN step...It's easy to say these things when you a PROFICIENT in drawing. MAKE SURE YOUR LEVEL OF DRAWING IS HIGH AF. KNOW HOW TO DRAW WELL... Not beginner/amateur level. This video literally has higher level/quality of digital artwork. This STILL applies if you're a cartoonist, animator, etc.

Inspiring! I am a Junior 3D artist, can’t find a job in industry for a long time. Everyone requires 3-5 years of experience. I’ve heard that all the freelance work go to India or China since people don’t ask for a lot of money there, so it’s hard to compete. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Unless you're super talented or get really lucky it's the same for everyone. It's normal for most jobs in art related industries, it's often more about who you know than what you know. It's a weird situation because every employer asks for at least 2 years industry experience but very few employers are willing to give it. Always apply for those jobs anyway because I think they just put that on as standard, if you're good enough they could overlook it. It does mean however that if you're up against someone with industry experience you're at an instant disadvantage, which sucks.

I would say you have 2 choices for this situation. Either you go crazy mode and and do an absolute beast of a portfolio while having a stable job not in this industry and loose a lot of hours of sleep. Or you lower your standards by a lot and apply mainly in indie game studios and other small local projects that you think they may require your skills. The only problem with the latter is that you might still not be able to make enough money so you might need to have a part time job outside the industry at least in the beginning while you build up your reputation and network. Also not living alone helps a lot. So either live with a family member or good friend and partially pay them rent.

I took this advice & found a mentor that's got 20+ years of experience in Freelancing, via a Freelancing course & its very helpful. 12:06 I'm learning a lot from it & I'll be working hard on my portfolio, as well as finding my first client.

I'm 15 and gonna fix my pc probably this week since it was broken. Thank you for the inspiration. I think I'm gonna make 3d in the style of VALORANT's trailers (similar to Arcane or LoL trailers)

One more note. If your employer asks if you're happy with your rates / work environment. Please be honest with them. I've had it happen a few times where I ask for feedback and my freelancers say everything is a-okay before then getting ghosted by them in the middle of a project.

I could never work as a freelance, there were some pages where they did a battle royale style and I never won, on some occasions other users took my hard work, added a couple of touches and collected the prize, that demotivated me. I spent 7 hours restoring and showing the client the progress of an old photograph of her grandfather that was damaged, I gave the final work, they added a small touch-up on her eyes and they paid the woman who made that scam. F. The Internet is cruel to some people.

I don't know how realistic 7 figures really is (for a 2D artist) unless you're getting lucky with crypto gambling, but 6 is definitely doable with some skill, a twitter account, patreon, and maybe a few quality items on something like gumroad. Find a niche (this can be tough), keep your promises manageable and stay consistent. It can take a couple of years to hit that mark, but definitely realistic.

@@kitnai6639 I'm not sure how much I'm capable of coaching, but I can expand on a few things. If you're just starting out you really want to have a good idea of what exactly you'd like to do with your illustration and how far along you are in being able to hit that goal. Basically, know where you want to go, commit to it, and continuously assess your ability to get there. It's important to be specific -- be able to concisely tell somebody (and yourself) what that goal (or goals) is. Something along the lines of "I just want to get paid to draw" isn't specific and sounds aimless. There's nothing wrong with being aimless for a bit, but if you're going to do this as a career you have to find a way to move past that stage and maintain focus. A disclaimer. Just because you're setting a goal, and you're going to stay disciplined and work hard to hit it, doesn't mean you should be closed off to other possibilities. You might find, at some point, that you want to change direction. This happens, but just like a career change or some other crossroads in life, those decisions should be considered carefully. If you're just shifting goals every couple of months then you're back to being aimless. Personally, I think this is the most difficult and most important part of getting good at anything. Once you do it though, the rest kind of takes care of itself

I made 6 figures last year (on $500 US per day) but some of the advice here isn't great imo. Cold calling is a waste of time. It's very slow but the only way to truly improve your chances of charging big and getting work is to aim to be the absolute best you can and pursue that goal aggressively. Hell, the very best digital artists make double what I make. But DAMN they good.

Man, is really nice how you explain it. What can you say about people needs? What I mean is, we artist are versatile, but every single one is better at one specific thing. So, it is worth getting better at something we one to, or at something most of "The Clients" are looking for? Example: let say 75% of the clients out there are lookink for 3D modeling, but don't have any experience on it but only 2D drawing. That's probably the 25% (if not less). Then that 25% divides on other factors like: portraits, character designes, landscape, etc. Which I am better at portraits. So, what is better to start a Business? Starting with something totally new or developing what I already have?

​@@neftalyroman3654 A bit late to the party: Market research is the way. You say you're good at portraits. Fine. Here are questions for yourself: - What kind of portraits? Fantasy? Realistic? Cartoonish? Is there a theme that stands out from your drawings? Then: - Who might be interested in those portraits? List them. - Who might have enough money to pay? Categorize. - Now you have the group of people: Who are they really? Where do they hang out? Find it. How to find it: - Google is your friend, Facebook groups, linkedin searches, Instagram Hashtags etc. Sparktoro is pretty neat as well. Everything goes. You WANT to find their hubs. For you it could be DnD Art, maybe some university students are looking for portraits for their OCs. Maybe it could be through seniors houses, doing their portraits for their families to remember them. Could be the same for pets. People don't buy art. They buy a connection, a story to share, they buy a right to be accepted by their peers. Once you found their hubs: - Go through the messages, the comments, ask questions and if you can interview those people. (Check out "User Research on Google). - You need to find their "bleeding neck problems". Example: Your cat is old, it's going to pass soon. But you have nothing to remember it. You're pressed by time to find something that will leave a trace of him in our world. That could help you grieve. It's quite hardcore, but here you could probably help them better live through their grief period. Now: You have your niche market, and what they're looking for. What's left is for you to design your product based on your artskills. Exposure only is a gambling game. Market research and User Research is what gives companies an edge. It's a really sketched overview but I hope you get the gist of it =) lemme know if you have questions! Best of luck =)

I have a Computer science degree and have applying to hundreds of jobs... they all tell me I need professional experience or my interview was good but they chose someone with more professional experience. Also I noticed interview requests hit my phone's spam filter a month ago and I didn't notice PAIN thinking about freelancing now... some of my relatives just want me to get a retail job at this point ;_;

I`m only starting out and it`s all just so overwhelming. Everyone asks for experience, I am starting to think that it`s impossible to find any freelance projects at all and I`ll be stuck at some 9-5 till death or by some miracle becoming famous.

With working from home being common place now I dont really see the point in freelancing IF you can get a full time studio position. Getting insurance on your own is much more expensive than having on provided by a company. Working on stuff i think is cool isnt an issue because.. I wouldnt apply somewhere that didnt do something I wanted to do. I would recommend doing freelance on the side, but always having a full time position locked in.

For someone who's into 2d and 3d, does that mean they need to create different portfolios?

I think you’d do a all in one but don’t make it chaotic. Having both shows range

If you're going to make your portfolio on websites like wix, you can specify it on your bio and create a separate section showcasing just your 2d skills, recruiters will probably think it would be nice to have a person with 2d knowledge in 3d field, it can add value to your works. Good luck

Yeah, how do I make it non chaotic and what if I don't have a website, but I use platforms like artstation or Instagram?

I still have issues getting my first client fivr. I haven't got any n not sure where I'm getting wrong it's been 4 months I made fivr account before I made n deleted as Nothing was happening n made again n nothing is happening

I shared my fivr gigs on Facebook groups, my art style and being open to client preference when it comes to style and portfolio are being shared whenever asked or otherwise. Even on twitter..but it seems something fundamentally I'm missing. Cuz my friend he did nothing of sort but he gets constant line of client and he is at the point of deciding which work to take n which not .while I'm still struggling to get my first

right but how do u actually land multiple projects that have long enough deadlines to be able to work on multiple at a time. the projects that i get pretty much have to be dealt with one at a time because the deadlines are pretty tight and i cant imagine killing myself with an extra job or even 2 extra jobs to make the sort of income you are talking about. that part of freelance eludes me.

Do you have to do 3D? I have no experience with it and I’m only really good at 2D work
