Great analysis Ian! I too struggled with the counter puncher as this is my style of play. The weakness of the counter puncher is that they "think" they know where your gonna hit. You can use their knowledge against them. I find I win against them when I go behind them with the ball, they are thinking side to side.

This is a really interesting analysis from a counterpuncher perspective and understanding this particular matchup better since it's a quite common playing style with the nuances you describe and not just a pusher, which I see much less of. I recognize what you talk about, even if I am not always aware of it on the court so it's great to have the key elements explained in a clear way.

All a counterpuncher is in reality is a pusher with better skills. Neither attack unless they are absolutely forced to. Such as when someone approaches the net, then it is attack or lose the point. But they will almost never take the initiative.

Well in reality a pusher is the lowest form of a counterpuncher only seen in recreative tennis while a counterpuncher is played at the highest level, because they will finish easy balls and will attack opponents attacks with pace. Andy Murray is the best counterpuncher and at some points in his career, Djokovic was playing counterpuncher style a lot (most during 2015/2016 when he wasnt feeling the ball in some matches). So pusher is a bad player who doesnt try anything but a counterpuncher is a personal choice of style by a very capable player

If a Counterpuncher can basically do it all, isn't that just a good player? what is the name of The Top10 pros's playstyle? are they not counterpunchers? and if they are, then it wouldn't be fair to try and defeat the playstyle, but them in general right? or they're actually not counterpunchers? i see Counterpunchers as All-Rounders. Are they not it?

Djokovic, Medvedev, nadal, zverev are counterpunchers. The rest of the top 10 guys are aggressive baseliners. Alcaraz and Hurkacz has a hint of all-court play.

Murray is the best counterpuncher in history, Djokovic and Medvedev are often choosing that style of play but not all the time (mostly when they are not feeling the ball too well). Murray, Simon and a few more top pros were playing that style of play all the time and it gave results, especially for Murray because he could attack much better when it was needed, he just didnt do it too often
