It is so true.

When alumni get together we invariably discuss our favorite professors and two always pop up. It was obvious that both knew their subject matter inside out but they had very different teaching styles. Prof. A was super engaging, enthusiastic and charming. Prof. B was somewhat unapproachable and intimidating. B spent most of his time lecturing; however, he did ask for participation regularly to take a pulse. To be clear, B didn't let formative assessment dictate his schedule but he certainly knew when to slow down a tiny bit. I may not have loved Prof. B but I certainly appreciated him. Another fun video, Mark.

Just to be clear, I definitely prefer professors like *_you_* and Prof. A every time. Prof. B was just someone who may not have expressly portrayed caring and zeal but it was clear he was determined for all of his students to succeed. Scary but earned all of our respect for sure.

Holy crap Wolters world I started watching you 3 years ago because I wanted to learn German. I remember I wanted to psych myself up so I typed in "Germany" on KZread, and your Berlin video popped up. It worked. Now I just spent the past 3 months in Germany and Austria as a bartender and I'm back in the States to finish my bachelor's and get an Med to become a teacher and your videos are AGAIN the first thing that pops up. I feel like my life has just come full circle. Thank you friend. You've had a great, and rather odd, amount of influence on my life.

Hello! I’m a senior in high school right now doing an intro to education course at a college. I have a presentation soon on the 12 virtues of being a good teacher, my word/virtue being Zeal, which is how I found this video! I just wanted to say that I will be using this video not just because you talk about zeal, but you yourself express it. Read world experience is definitely an assett when teaching

From some who’s been in both a teaching and learning position, I find it extremely effective to be understanding of your student’s or trainees situation. Use your classroom or workspace for both learning and work opportunities. Realizing these people have other classes or lives outside your classroom makes huge difference for you growing relationships with your students which can boost morale and motivate them. Another is a method I use to teach, is first demonstrate how to do it, then walk them through it, then let work on it with help when needed, then I finally leave them to work on it without me looking over their shoulder. I find this gives people the opportunity to see it work in real time, then try with supervision, then try it on their own with the comfort of a safety net, then learn to do it without feeling like they are being watched. Remember making people feel comfortable and that you care for their development will positively affect their performance in class or at work. Which for us benefits in our performance reviews. Being that professor or work trainer that’s hard nosed and super harsh with their class work will only decrease the quality of your relationships with your student and will carry a negative stigma towards your name in school and the workforce. Can’t tell you how many times people tell me about a teacher who they and every other student hated in college or the workplace.

it is like online reviews. Happy and satisfied customers never write or talk about the good ones (maybe once in awhile if someone specifically asks), but the upset ones will share their experience everywhere and often :)

I'm not sure why this came up again a while after I first watched it but I'm so glad I did. Excellent points Mark that as an architect I will think about and use to engage my prospects. My daughter is now pursuing a PhD at U of I and I'm definitely sharing this with her. Listening to your CRAZY definition reminds me of the scene in Rodney Dangerfield's Back To School when he feels compelled to list all of his real world experiences to his frustrated academic entrenched business professor, lol.

You have GOT to be kidding me! I watch ALL of your travel videos as I am an avid traveler. I am actually in college now for History. I am going to be a History/Geography/Government secondary level teacher. I will be pursuing career as a college professor as well in the future. Upon searching for videos on that topic I came across THIS video! I had no idea that you were also a professor! I'm not sure how I missed that watching your other videos but I'm glad to know now. On point Prof. I don't think our students realize sometimes how much we care and how much we want them to succeed. But when they do realize it, they seem to push themselves more. I teach Early Childhood Education courses by the way.

Professor, you are da man. You are teaching by example and real life experiences. Lots of folks out there have fancy titles have no real life experience. I am not being rude or putting anyone down. I am saying it as it is. Whatever you do, i dont have if you have 10 PHDs or JDs or other related degrees, if you dont have job experience & life experience, dont even bother. Learning and knowing are important and they do go together well, my 2 cent opinion.

I have taught adult ed, high school, but primarily special ed in elementary school. So no uni teaching, but this message from Mark is so spot on. I have been using the CRAZY method without knowing it. Thanks Mark for the great inspiring video. I love teaching.

As a student, I 100% agree with all of the information in this video. My 7th grade social studies teacher had 'crazy' down packed, and she was a fantastic teacher. The only people who didn't thrive in her class were the kids who didn't care about school. She frequently expressed that she loved us and she was always trying to improve her lessons.

Super thanks Professor Wolters. I totally agree with you. Teaching competencies, skills and expertise are incremental, developmental and experiential. As teachers we become better over time if we develop a habit of wanting to continue to learn. This is confirmed by Professor Akinpelu (2001) who argues that a teacher cannot teach effectively, unless he/she continues to learn himself/herself. Your video is inspirational.

I am planning to go into teach having done marketing at industry for last decade and knowing how to build and nurture marketing people, but I fear that I do not have any teaching experience or teaching qualification nor PhD, I['ve got a BA/MSc In marketing, what do you think? In a way I was lucky. I had 35 years in industry in 3 countries before entering academia. I had a huge pile of real world anecdote to draw on to make my classes relevant yet fun.

Ask them questions (but not the usual "tell me one fact" thing) and get them talking with each other. that helps them make bonds with each other and they want to come to class more

What if administration assigns teacher to a subject which he or she is not so much into. Because sometimes they do it rather randomly. Especially now when funds are tight and they want to squeeze all from you.

Well they need to suck it up and realize one does not always get to teach the exact subject they dreamed of every semester. Sometimes it is on us as educators to create the passion in ourselves to make our classes better.

As a university professor myself, I couldn't agree more! Admittedly, some of the stuff I teach is so theoretical that you can't really make the material into real-world examples, but you can still make sure to highlight how it's relevant to students' field and their major, and how it's full of really cool, fascinating puzzles, and give real-world examples of trying to solve those puzzles :)

True. I used to teach a very theoretical B2B course and it was tough to get those examples to relate to students but when I would talk about how they would use it at work they perked up a bit.

most of my university professors only cared about 1 thing: money be it for research (a little important), office renovation (a lot as most renovated their office annually), book loyalties (for recommending expensive books for their course), etc. Very little care was put into teaching. Often classes would start 10min late and finish 15min early. and scheduling if exams was purposefully bad with exams at late in the night and right next day. i even had teachers who would demand their assignments a day earlier because the professor or TA is heading out of town for a vacation. this happened over 4 years of undergrad that made me hate academia.

@@woltersworld however, there were some few professors who were in it to teach. they didn't get the high paying research funds, but they taught well. and they made school worth it in the end.

I remember going through undergrad and realising I could find better teachers on the internet, all I needed was the course syllabus and I was better off figuring out stuff on my own.

@@UncleRoykus that is what my goal is for this channel. to develop intro marketing and intermediate marketing courses via videos so people could watch my videos to help them learn.

A point that I'd like to add is "Keep it relevant". One thing that's really been annoying me recently has been a professor who teaches business networking, but regularly plunges into lengthy discussion about how his mail order wife goes abroad and smuggles seeds back into the country, which she then grows in her garden. Sure, it's a nice conversation piece and something that I'd enjoy discussing at greater length in a different setting... but it has nothing to do with helping me to establish or maintain a business since I don't plan on becoming a professional seed smuggler for a living.

Without a PhD you cannot go for a tenure track position at a 4 year school. You could be an instructor though

@@thephoenix3155 We will get there. We were looking at this Christmas, but my sister in law has a baby on the way and they want to celebrate baby's first christmas as a family so we are here for Christmas, so it looks like December 2020 is New Zealand time

I hate my Professors, they cant teach for their life, i learned most of the topics they taught through youtube, since on youtube the guy teaching takes 5 minutes to explain it all broken down and the professor in university takes 3 hours and im still lost
