The 5 principles of highly effective teachers: Pierre Pirard at TEDxGhent

After a high profile career as CEO, Pierre Pirard decided to redirect his focus and became a teacher. Working in Brussels' most disadvantaged neighbourhoods, he discovered that these children -- usually portrayed as troublemakers -- are able to rise above this negative image. He believes that these kids are the future of our society and that we should care for their education, no matter what their socio-cultural and economical background is.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    The four 'principles' of leadership and teaching: 1. Believe in your students and let them know you believe in them. 2. Set important goals for the student. 3. Plan purposefully how to achieve the important goals. 4. Invest in your student: Ensure the student stays on target.

    I'm a teacher and I completely agree with Pierre the speaker, but one thing which I have observed is that it's so hard to make the learners believe if you don't believe in self first. So I'm really working on myself to be a firm believer, because that's why I went and got a certificate to be able to teach; because of the passion and drive for Mathematics, and now having lost my faith and belief through discouragement and losing hope in the education system, I wish to reclaim my faith and my love for this way of life.

    It's okay to lose your faith in education. Teaching is exhausting. It can often be underappreciated. It usually doesn't pay wonderfully. Many leave the progession from exhaustion, because you are always always giving so much of yourself. And sometimes, leaving is what you need to do to take care of yourself. For a short time, for a long time, maybe forever. That's okay too. Forgive yourself for needing to care for yourself.

Excellent work to you sir for actually using your brain to independently think for yourself and question the teacher's as to why their classes succeed or suffer. Bravo for sharing what you had learned from the children and the teachers alike. Many thanks from, An aspiring leader! 👏👏👏👏

  • @vwilliams8196

    @vwilliams8196

    You can have high expectations, but the system works against those expectations. For instance. in my school system, students are placed into band yet do not pay for their instruments. Often times, the band teacher will have 40 children in his or her room, and about 15 or more will not have an instrument. Then the band teacher is expected to build a good program. When other more affluent systems have parents who care enough to get their child an instrument. Even when they don't have the money. I stress "don't have the money," because often a parent in "deprived neighborhoods will spend about 300 dollars on their child's shoes and hair but won't get the kid an instrument. You can't teach school when you have intruders from the neighborhood coming into the school, to harm children. True story, once an intruder came through the window. He was a male, and beat up this girl. Doors locked, everything locked, but no one thought to lock the window.

    4 years before this speech Pierre Pirard found himself in the middle life crisis. That was the time to change something. From someone who had been leading companies, he decided to become a teacher - easy job, students willing to listen and study, a long holiday, 20 working hours a week. A working place he also chose meticulously - Molenbeek in Brussels. In the school he found many different people representing different worlds. He discovered that for some teachers things work quite well, and for the others do not. Some teachers couldn't make a change (name the why's) and others could improve the lives of others dramatically. In the comment below, there are four principles that Mrs Teacher shared with Pierre, ones that he wants to share with us. Then he comes back to leadership with this quote: "True leadership lies in guiding others to success. In ensuring that everyone is performing at their best, doing the work they are pledged to do and doing it well." In his school in Molenbeek he has met more leaders than anywhere else.

    respect is a positive character of a person which s/he learn it from the crib. it is valuable commodity, that it can not be bought by money, but can be learned. Parents play the most important role in shaping/ molding the mind of the a child. And remember that environment influence most the rearing of a child. Do not mistake "respect" to fear or pressure because these are opposite ideas. ha ha ha!

    Yes it comes from the home but needs to be instilled at school. This is the case with special needs children and all children really. They need help in both settings .

    You can see from this talk that the speaker has not been a teacher for very long, and does not understand his profession deeply. Teaching is, at it's heart, about understanding. Understanding, yes, the students that you teach. But to the same extent, knowing the material you teach. Knowing why it is taught. Because for students to understand something, it needs to connect to them, in a meaningful way. The belief that this is possible is the easiest part of this connection. Encouragement is easy, and comes naturally when your teaching becomes better. When students begin to notice the importance of the subjects, and their own ability to understand them, they notice themselves how they are able to do the things that you, or the world in general, demands of them. (Also all models of the sort presented should start with an axiom that defines the optimized variable. Otherwise it's pretty meaningless to talk about behavioral goals)

    Imagine differentiated instruction, collaborative learning, and students centered learning, all in one. Teachers who have not used Sabere Synergistic Board will continue to be overworked and burned out. SSB is sweeping Asia. Asian schools are adopting American evolution in education. Go figure!!! It makes the teacher's job easy and increases students' engagement, learning, and learning gains. It is the board that teachers usually say "Oh my god" when they see it. Check it out. It will turn your teaching life around. Innovation Drives Education!!!
