How To Be A Friend with chef Christina Tosi | A Bit of Optimism Podcast

When life gets tough, true friends ask for help.
Christina Tosi is that kind of friend. She’s someone I can trust with anything and someone I can cry with. She also happens to be a world-class pastry chef, a genius dessert maker, and the founder and CEO of Milk Bar.
We reflect on the art of asking for help and how sometimes all we need from a true friend is 8 minutes of their time.
This…is A Bit of Optimism.

And, by the way, I wanted to share Christina’s recipe for making an Ice Cream Loaf. It’s magic.
You will need:
• 2 cups (1 pint) of softened ice cream
• 1 cup of self-rising flour
• 1 egg
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a loaf pan and set aside.
2. In a large bowl, mix the melty ice cream, self-rising flour, and egg. Do not overmix.
3. Pour the batter into loaf pan.
4. Bake for 45 minutes or until toothpick clean.
Enjoy.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't call a friend when I'm struggling because i don't want to burden them so this beautiful, emotional, vulnerable, candid conversation between you and Christina is really inspiring and eye-opening! 🌹 I've saved it on my KZread because I know I will want to go back and re-watch it more than once. Thanks to both of you for sharing your special friendship with us! ✨🪷

This is amaizing!!! Thanks for every word you shared with us! I also want to share a quote from a novel, that is related to what you have said about "good and bad times". One of the characteres say: "There is no banquet in this world that doesn't come to an end. Yet soon after, he added, "But, I will never leave you." And the last thing I want to share is something that comes from my teaching experience and is related to "the two ways of asking for help" you mentioned. I used to teach only teenagers (or adults) and every time they felt the need to ask me for help for the first time, it was very difficult for them and when they finally did, they seemed very embarrassed. When I started teaching fourth and fifth graders (primary school), I had the same experience. However, the first time I taught a first grader and she had to write the letter "B" she said "but you have to help me write this, I DON'T KNOW HOW, YOU HAVE TO HELP ME IF YOU WANT ME TO WRITE THIS! (and I write it in capital letters because she spoke very loudly, without mincing words, in fact she moved her hands and made a very cute face) I remember how her eyes sparkled and the smile that didn't fall off her face. I thought maybe it was just her, the way she was, but that was not the case, other childs at first and second graders asked me in the same confident way (some of them in a quieter way, but not embarrassed at all). So I come to the (sad) conclusion that the difficulty of asking for help is something we internalize when we grow up. And we, as teachers, play an important role in that. We say we want them to ask for help, but when we play team games we set points and prizes, and we say they are meant to be collaborative games because kids can ask each other for help BUT "if you get the answer you get 2 points, while if you ask for help you get 1." How can we encourage children to ask for help if we tell them that by doing that they will get less, when it is totally the opposite! I know I had a big role in some of the teens I mentioned earlier, and I'm afraid to follow through with that. I don't want them to feel that way, I don't want that cute little girl to lose that confidence she has when she asks for help. And his lectures, podcasts and books help me a lot to change what I need to change, to do it better.
