Already knew the treble hook snare . Have never had to use it but it’s part of the kit . Also have nails for spikes on a windlass trap . Very good job pointing out the contamination of the canteen .. when it comes down to real survival there are no rules and regulations to follow .. it’s simply survive or perish , this mindset must be the motivational drive to keep you alive .

Finally I’ve found another channel with someone that is actually teaching practical applications when sharing their knowledge. And then I see you’ve also completed the advanced course at the pathfinder school too!?! I’ve watched Sean Kelly for years and seeing another whose mastered the skill that provides different perspectives on the same skills and how they’re applied is simply amazing. Soo happy, gained a sub and views for sure because I love seeing different methods and then applying them myself. Keep them coming when you’re able to, saw you’re still active duty but I’ll watch them when you do post em whenever it is.

As always like the video. I'm george 67. My father was a drunk. He started hitting her. So I helped her leave. Had a year and half in school.to go. Was tired of him hitting me. So I stopped him. He said get out of my house. Not working no where to go. Pack up my camping equipment and left. Went about 10 miles up the mountain. Pitch my shelter half. Long store short. There I stated for 1 and 1/2. Never went to store and didn't come down from my. Mountain. Taught myself a lot of what you are doing. I came down joined the army. They sent me some where I didn't want to go and do things I didn't want to do. Back in the early 70s . Came home and found out I can survive any place. Thank you for your service.

Great stuff! Obviously you have your methods pretty scienced-out over time but the main area we seem to diverge on is water. I'm a big fan of having a much larger metal container in my kits. The first is a stainless steel 5 L milk pail with a lid. It's a bit heavy but not really huge, it fits into all but the smallest packs I own. And it's the perfect size to stuff my Helikon-Tex Swagman roll into! That gives me a very potent shelter system and the ability to easily move, sanitize and store over a gallon water at a time. And when that's too heavy or bulky I have a titanium 2900 ml pot with lid & bail. This fits in pretty much every pack I own and being Ti it weighs practically nothing. IMO it's an absolute game-changer to be able to water a few liters at at time! In fact it makes things so much easier that the TV show "Alone" limits contestants to pots of 2 L or less (at least they used to, haven't seen the show in a few seasons).

  • @tenchraven

That hook technique also works on birds. Works better, really, because they gulp. It is also a great reason to have wire leaders, or a reason to sacrifice 4" or so of snare wire per hook set. As for the water gathering, a couple of produce bags or an oven bag folded at the bottom of the canteen/bottle carrier adds functionally no mass and no volume, it's like having a couple of playing cards down there. And it simplifies that question.

You accomplish a lot in 15 minutes. I went and bought some of those 1 walled metal bottles so water can be stored and be heated over the fire. No sense using plastic, not as durable or as usable. Both can store things from getting wet too. Cant beat wool blankets, good for year round use and kept in the vehicle for the emergency. Thank you Andrew, always look forward to your videos. God bless you When out in the field, what do you do to keep your axe and knives sharpened? Somehow my kits always seem to include the kitchen sink, meaning i add so much to it that its very heavy. Seems like everything is essential to me, but a guy of knowledge like you knows how to do without the extras.

Good morning Andrew. You have a calm and friendly way of teaching serious topics. I'm planning a travel/camping/boondocking/work trip. This morning, I'm drinking coffee and binge watching my playlist of favorites. Gotta refresh this tired brain of mine on your "down and dirty" survival tips. Although, Andrew, I have seen you do a bit of 'glamping' in your videos! Chai Tea in the field. I'm all for comfort, if possible!! I camp in my little car. the seats fold flat and I use Mylar bubble wrap to cover the windows. I blow up an air mattress with my battery powered pump. Voila! If my car is full of stuff, I do tent glamping. It can be surprisingly comfortable. Repacking my various bags and kits has changed what they contain slightly but the basics never change. Me and my grown son have traveled 4 years for my job. Thank you for helping me find the strength and confidence within myself to live the life I've always dreamed of. It's rare that a son chooses to spend time with his mom, so I'm doing it!

Add a a couple of gallon freezer bags or a turkey roasting bag for unsafe water collection. Take back to camp and process/use as needed. I like those little Lipton soup packs, 2 in a box for a buck. Also bullion cubes bring flavor to a fresh game stew or can be sipped on cold nites. Sugar, salt and pepper packs .Also if your not apposed to cooking , check out the small packet of premixed cupcake ,cornbread . and gravy mixes. It is amazing how just a few calories of warm food can boost morale. Even plain hot water can warm your internal core, rehydrate you and save energy reserves. Thanks for the Vid, Hope your promotion went threw and congrats again on passing the advanced survival class at Dave Cantebury school.. Lead the way ranger !

Ethical shmethical. Food is needed for survival. Hypothetically, if I were having to survive I would probably be poaching to beat the band. Hypothetically. You guys, and you know of whom I am referring, are a veritable plethora of survival knowledge and skills. One question was answered with the canteen. I was wondering, after the water was gathered in the canteen, could it be heat sterilized and returned to the canteen thereby sterilizing any residual moisture in the canteen? The limitation is how much water the cup holds which is roughly half the canteen. So boil, cool, consume, repeat. Thank you, Major. Appreciate all your hard work.

I always hated 'L' shaped flashlights until now. That was pretty smart. Semper Fi.

Monofilament and treble hooks make a great early warning device around your camp too, especially at night

As a kid I grew up in the bottom lands of the Arkansas river, the trick we learned was take empty 2 liter pop bottles and use them for dirty water and a bonus empty pop bottles will float, so off in our Alice rucks they would go. We would use them as makeshift rafts and tie bank line to the rucksack and than to us so we wouldn't lose them and float down river to our camp. (Summer time) in the winter we would still use the empty pop bottles to fill up with dirty water and than disinfect.

I’ve seen the treble hook trap before. It is very unethical and illegal if caught. At least, that’s what a Game Warden in MS told me. However, in a real life or death survival scenario, gotta get the food somehow. I prefer handhold traps with nails around a hole. Or snare setups. But, this was a good tool for those that may have never seen it. The lightbulb trick was a new one to me. I never would have thought to sacrifice a bulb like that. Very slick. Only other thing I’d have done, fill the bottle and the cup with water. No point in wasting empty space during your trip back from the old waterhole. Good video. I’d love to see more detail on setting up the pack and how to load it up securely. Oh, and where the heck can I get a belt like that?!?! That was friggin’ cool!

Qt. size or larger bags can gather water as well! I carry a bag from a "box of wine" for that purpose and a nozzle modification gives one a gravity fed H2o blatter for camp or solar shower...etc etc etc
