I agree! Of all the historical clarinet sounds, I wish most of all that I got to hear him play in person

was in audience for a marcellus master class. Totally blind and a simple toot after putting reed on and that man...that God of clarinet .....could imitate EVERYTHING each different student did..timbre, attack, note shape, EVERYTHING on one setup.

I had a professor who summarized the idea that you should never play so loud that you lost the focus in the phrase "never louder than lovely."

That is a wonderful way of saying it! I always felt it sounded weird coming out of my mouth...so I never say it that way - but I fully think its a great way to say it

as a beginner clarinettist I would live to play the Debussy. If is funny you said the word floating. Because when I listen to this I alway think of flying or soaring through the sky...or better said I feel my soul is soaring through the sky...

funny thing. listening to Marcellus does make me a better player...but the strange thing is the more I listen....the better HE gets! in a similar vein...the more I played the Mozart, the HARDER it got! Playing skills are not the only skills critical to being a musician...listening skill is equally important.

Hi All these examples are wonderfull. But sometimes it feels a bit stiff or to much tone sound and to little expression. There are so manny ways the clarinet can sound. Do listen to players like Jack Brymer or George Pieterson. They where just amazing. A european sound yes. Try to compare how they frase f ex listen to Peterson in Debussy. It’s just wonderfull how he use the clarinet like a voice more than a clarinet- his version of Debussy is just outstanding

Hi Joachim! I agree with you about the many ways in which the clarinet can sound beautiful. I have a good friend that studied with George Peterson, but I am not that familiar with his playing. I know Jack Brymer's playing. De Peyer's playing is the playing that I know best that is outside of the tone profile that I hear for myself. Yes, this group of recordings is pretty specific to my own "thing". I can't dispute that. During my Covid quarantine, I was going through players that influenced me that had videos that I was shocked didn't have more views. I agree that my pursuit could have, and perhaps should have, gone outside the people that play in a way that is what I emulate. I will be the first to be on board with appreciating playing that sounds different than my own.

I am a new clarinetist player I do not know which brand to buy I want to buy a good brand but I also need an affordable price can you please let me know which do you think is the best brand

Hi Malachi If you can find a buffet, selmer, yamaha, or even Jupiter at a price point that feels accessible to you - I would go that route. There are certainly cheaper ways to go, and some may be ok at first, but they don’t hold up very well. The most important thing is a mouthpiece on any option you go with. I made a student mouthpiece video with options from 10 to 30 dollars that will make any student model clarinet a better experience. The lowest price of one of the brands I listed will be a good starting place. Those are all reputable manufacturers

@@malachiayala3346 The standard reed I start people on is Rico orange box #2 amzn.to/3CK2TOY this should be good for at least the first six months of playing (more than one box...but this type of reed)
