The last question really reminds me of Charlotte's Web when Fern's mother goes to the doctor, concerned that her daughter thinks animals really talk. And basically the doctor says that maybe animals do talk, it's just that adults don't listen as well as kids. I had an intense imagination as a kid. As a 50-year-old still feel bad when a stuffed animal is lying face-down on the carpet. I'm a mostly pretty rational adult these days, despite the fact that I kind of half believe that Middle Earth might exist somewhere. ❤

I have two small children and also suffer from serious mental health issues so I can totally relate to everyone worried about how this is going to affect their kids. What I think we need to keep in mind in all of this is that children are highly adaptive and are experts in making the best out of the cards they are dealt with, so to speak. Dr. Scott's childhood memories are a great example of this. Of course this isn't an excuse to do whatever and treat our children badly, I guess that's clear. But if we are a) aware of our thoughts, words, actions and feelings and b) aiming to always do our best - and sometimes our best just isn't very good, that's life - then we are tremendously less likely to cause harm than parents who aren't even aware of these things (or don't care). What's also important to remember is that humans in general are very capable of dealing with trauma if we have adequate social support. Those of us suffering from C-PTSD because of childhood likely didn't have enough resources growing up to support us in processing and healing. So usually the trauma, while obviously not great to experience, isn't the "real" problem but the lack of safety, reassurance, love and support. All of this said, even if traumatic events or circumstances happen to our children, us being there for them (and I mean really being there, not just physically but I think that much is clear to people who are worrying about these things and keep educating themselves) can make all the difference. I have to remind myself of all of this repeatedly when the anxiety puts so much pressure on me that it's almost unbearable. Hopefully this can be helpful for someone out there too! ☺

I was also very imaginative as a kid and engaged in the same magical thinking. I was alone a lot of the time, being the oldest sibling in a neighborhood without kids my own age. I don’t remember thinking my stuffed animals were actually sentient (although I was suspicious for a long time after watching _Toy Story_ ). I still treated them as if they were sentient…. I covered them up when it got cold, moved them around so that they’d have something different to “look at” and reposition them in more “comfortable” poses if they leaned over. It wasn’t about play… it was because it bothered me to see an anthropomorphic face and dismiss it, even though I could logically tell myself that the eyes were just glass

Thanks for the extra content, Dr. Scott. I was interested in the question about traumatizing your kids. First, I started your book last night (bawled for a good while right from the first few pages), and today, I've been asking myself the first few questions. My own mom has always been highly anxious, so I was asking myself if certain beliefs I hold come from her in relation to that. I believe that some of her fears and anxiety did traumatize me, even though she never meant it to, and was overall a good parent. I'm finding this very helpful already. Thanks again.

Hey Dr. Scott. Have you done a video on the cost of bad habits and holding onto those vs. the benefits of change and letting go? I think I saw one of your shorts on this subject. I am interested in a video of that graph if you have one.

Thanks, Vicky, for asking this question and thanks Scott for answering it. I have been pondering the difference between anxiety and excitement. I feel like my nervous system has been overwhelmed by too much input and stimulation, so that things I used to get excited about now feel anxiety-provoking. Perhaps also due to shifting motivation.

A few years back I got to meet Philip Mehler who is basically a celebrity in the world of treating eating disorders (no idea why he wanted to meet me or how he even knew who I was 😂) and one thing I really took to heart was that he said multiple times he was “immersed” in the world of eating disorders. Like this can’t just be a 9-5 then you forget about it.

I have been in remission for my Major Depression for 11 months now. The longest time, ever. I recently saw my sister try to kill herself. It was extremely traumatic. I have images flashing before my eyes. How do I keep myself in remission from my Depression and not let this trauma cause me any mental damage?

Dr Scott, think its better for you to focus scaling up the community/subscription base, live streams like today's episode and offer free help content over membership/engagement stratification. YT income will come with your authenticity and altruism in helping many. Between anxiety and excitement, while they are similar intense emotions, researchers found mind flipping of someone saying "I'm excited" bring more positive drive, stimulus and confidence as opposed to anxiety driven by fear, uncertainty and unpredictability.

Absolutely hate the word normal! As in an aspiration or the ideal. Its so narrow and obviously denotes everything outside the definition is abnormal therefore wrong. Its a word i try to avoid as much as i can. I try to reframe it as more the average. My family is mostly neurodiverse above average in many ways and below average in others but none of us are abnormal we are just not average. I think the language we choose can impact us greatly. No one should be made to feel abnormal we are all on a scale somewhere the bit in the middle is just the most populated not necessarily the best.

Many followers here come across as judgy and exclude people during live due to age and race. So whatever. Keep up the good work, I just can't be a part of his community.
