At minimum, stop "watching" the news on TV, they drag stories out and even then it's aimed at an average level of comprehension. You can get way more information and depth much faster by "reading" the news.

It's unfortunate that individuals who experienced a traumatic childhood don't learn healthy boundaries. Therefore, they haven't been able to gauge their limits. Many suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). We may be able to enjoy our lives after we deal with our trauma. But, we can't relive our childhoods. Thanks for sharing this information.

I'm now almost 74, and I live near Seattle, Washington State. I quit watching (and reading) the news about 40 years ago, when the central story on a slow weekend was a vehicle accident that killed a number of kids, IN MISSISSIPPI. "If it bleeds it leads" is their mantra. It keeps our whole culture in angst and upset. Too upset about things that don't matter or that we can do nothing about, to think clearly. Absorbing ALL of our attention and energy, so we can't do anything about what we DO care about. Despite avoiding the "news" or at least the editor's version of it, it's really impossible to avoid knowing what is going on. Truly. It's impossible. But turning down or out the screaming hysteria really helps.

Stimulation, period. Glad you discussed the 'watching sports' example. There's something to be said for going out, chatting with friends, socializing, etc to offset depression. But at some point, when I hit rock bottom, I realized that my nervous system needed a break from ANY stimulation. Even what is typically considered positive & therapeutic activities. Anything very stimulating & mentally or physically draining was setting me back.

I’m an RN, BS. Nursing is the worst. There’s always a staffing shortage, who will care for the patients because Sue called out. Mary is on maternity leave, Beth is on vacation! Can you please help us in your days off???? What days off?! You constantly call me in every day I have off! Patients need care but mistakes are high when you work 7 - 12 hour shifts!!!! It’s always so. The hospital doesn’t want to hire extra RNs ($$$$) but the other nurses are burned out. I retired early!! I couldn’t do it anymore. I was suffering and patient care was suffering. Enough!!!!! I’m done and very happy!!!

Watching the news is pure poison for the human mind. Sports aren't even entertaining anymore, and it's all the same boring nonsense that doesn't affect your life in any way. Put the damn phone down. DO NOT use your phone for the first two hours when you wake up instead of reaching for it the second your eyes open. Find a piece of nature and go hiking or walk with music on, and you'll feel infinitely better. Go to the gym for an hour each day, and you'll notice a huge difference in your mood.

For me, it’s reading comments on KZread, Reddit and other social media that causes the most anxiety. I feel bad and beaten up after viewing them. I am doing my best to avoid them. A concentration of judgmental and mean posts/comments about my group of people on Reddit for example nearly destroyed my mental health. It was so hard to look away, scrolling to see even one good comment. I realize that now it’s called doomscrolling.

I grew up with two narcisstic parents so I struggled with hoarding. Of course I married a covert narcissist unknowingly. But I spent a huge amount of time organizing our lives and home including spending weeks organizing paperwork into a mainstreamed filing system. A year and a half later while I was going to school and working and taking care of the baby and taking care of the man child and doing all chores and maintenance I came home to find my husband dumped all the files in with all the papers to be filed and bills to be paid and all the other papers he could find into a big mixed up mess. I felt myself break that day. That was nearly three decades ago and I haven't been able to recover from it... yet. The husband is no longer in my life.

Do you have recommendations for those of us that may have periods of days, or even weeks, when unable to be physically active? Is there another way to activate that destressing effect while layed up from, say, a surgery, or the flare period of a chronic condition? I find those to be my toughest times and biggest struggles, and, personally, am facing a series of 2-4 surgeries over the course of the next year, so finding a way to activate the effects of physical activity to alleviate the rumination that comes with being sedentary is a HUGE concern for me, and i know there are others that struggle with the pain/depression cycle, the inability to even take a walk every day to "get out of their head." Suggestions?

"It's a cultural thing to be a mild hoarder" (especially for all of us living in the US). So true! I am from Europe, but my husband is American and we do currently live in the US. He definitely has an issue with owning too much and having a very hard time letting things go. It causes me so much (unnecessary) stress! I definitely want to go into a more minimalistic direction myself, it's just hard to start when it seems so overwhelming and you have to deal with resistance from your partner as well as your own.I started, but then gave up again because it's just so much.

At one point I was close to working a full time job from home just not getting paid for it. I’ve had MDD, anxiety and ptsd for ages but after a major fire almost 2 years ago that’s led to financial disaster and dealing with my hearts adopted adult son’s 8 psych hospitalizations this past year I live in a state of constant panic. I stopped watching politics in 2017 when I destroyed TV because someone came on babbling their typical stuff and it just hit at wrong time and before I could stop myself I snap kicked my TV and cracked the screen. this made me reflect on things I can and cannot do anything about.

For me, it’s board games. It’s like sports in this video. My friends don’t understand and always pressure me to play with them. I avoid hanging out with them entirely if I know there’ll be games. I know it’s just a game but it’s too stressful for me. Lots of rules. Lots of competition. Lots of deception. Lots of mind game. Nah, thank you.

You said something very interesting in the beginning! You basically said that Anxiety isn't real, that it's a mental mechanism. So basically it seems that the next time I feel anxiety coming on, I should be able to tell my brain/myself, to " shut the F up, you're not real just a mental process that can't Effect me if I don't want it to"! Heck, in my brain that really helps me. And you are right on, with the balance between Stress and Anxiety. I know I have to manage my stress overloads, sometimes even more at certain times. But many times, I need to back up, make a Hit List, tell everyone demanding something from me, that things will take a little more time, and just try to knock off just a few important tasks pet day, till I'm caught up Thank you for being available to us low income, can't afford quality therapy from someone as good as you are. Thank you Keep it real, and id love to see the blessings you will get from your heavenly Father one day! Thank you

Yeah...the Smith Machine remains in the boxes on the floor in the way and I just spend time thinking about reasons to keep it when I actually have a gym membership. I don't like the idea of picking up viruses and stuff at gyms because they are petri dishes...I'm not very handy and don't enjoy putting things together so I think it's going back. If my fitness goals are real, i will make them happen at the gym where the equipment is already there and set up. Whats more, now that i am of a particular age, i get most gym admissions free. And, it gets me out of isolation. Good talk, Doc Scott 👍🫵👍

On the news front, I also need to balance the information intake. Especially as I'm in the climate and environmental space, it's hard seeing the stuff I was studying and predicting 20 years ago coming to reality is really hard. I like positive leftist news youtube.com/@positiveleftistnews?si=Nre-ADpRn1RHiv8s and while it still has inherent bias to negative news is because its a meta view of all sources- "ground news"
