How to Avoid INFO DUMPING | Write It Badly, Make It Better: Episode 4

Info dumping is hard to catch in our own writing, so I'm super excited to share tips I've learned for how to avoid info dumping. This is another "write it badly, make it better" example so you can see me attempt to fix info-dumping in action!

The "Write it Badly" example sounds like it could work well for a children's picture book.

I seriously live how well you went into how to fix info dumping. When most people go into how to fix it they don't give good examples if any at all. Thank you!

that is what I'm struggling with the first draft. I want to fix things, but I'm forcing myself to keep writing, so that I can get to the second draft sooner.

It's funny how, for me, I didn't fully grasp this one (even though I knew intellectually it was very important) until I goofed my first few chapters, hated them, fixed them similar to how you did in this video, and it's sooo much better after. Sometimes you just gotta go through it and go through the process and REALLY get this one.

Please do more of these videos, this was really helpful! I’m definitely an info dumper. I’m almost done with my first draft and I’ve been thinking about where do I even begin with the editing process. This video was really helpful, I’m a visual learner and loved this, thank you!!

So glad you liked it! I almost have to info dump in a first draft, just to tell myself what's going on, you're not alone. But we can always fix it later in edits! :)

Yay so glad you subscribed! And it's so tough, I feel like even knowing and understanding it, I can still be blind to doing it in my own writing, so thank goodness for edits where we catch this stuff haha!

Thank you for giving an example and explaining it in an easy to understand way. I'm 1/2 way through my first draft of my first novel and I was getting discouraged. Your videos have helped a lot!

Some of my favorite movies, shows, and etc have info dumps. But usually they're followed with visualls and not a wall of text. But the best are Evil Dead 2, Firefly, Priest (2011 vampire movie), amd Torchwood. It was short and too the point. They basically said "here's all the important stuff you need to know. Got it? Okay, moving on."
