I watched both videos of you taking and reassemble this stove and came to realize I don't have this stove so I went on ebay and found one in as good shape as yours and purchased it for $43 dollars today. Great instructions thanks.

Hi there, Firstly, many thanks for putting the time in to make these more than excellent tutorials about overhauling and operation of these Coleman stoves. I have a 443 exponent, which was bought off Ebay and said to be overhauled. Well, it was taking a long time to settle down after flashing up and used your video to clean out the generator tube and now working a lot better, with better low flame control. I found the cleaning wire was not the easiest to get out of the tube, but gently did the trick. This was pretty black, with small flecks of dirt along the length. Cleaned up the wire, then heated the generator tube up with my blow torch until the colors ran across it, to burn out the dirt, let it cool down and re-assembled. The wire now moves free in the generator tube. Just out of interest, the pump washer was well worn, but had a spare long shaft version, almost new, from a 533. Put this in instead of the original. Yes, it does stick out a bit, but find it makes pumping easier, not skinning my fingers, like with the original. To complete the re-assembly, I needed to change the filling valve seal, as it was losing a little pressure. The beast goes like a furnace on full power with this done. These Coleman stoves work really well for me, but they are history and made in Kansas. Doesn't get much better than that. Once again thanks for the tutorials and they are well worth a subscribe

Got my old 1996 Coleman 440 running with this video. Had a clogged jet and leaking valve. Unclogged the jet and replaced the o ring. Back in business. Thank you Sir for posting these two videos! Too easy.

I've used one of these for 40 years and it's never let me down. If only everything was engineered as well as these old Coleman stoves. Unfortunately, Coleman is making some crap now too. I bought a portable Coleman propane grill a couple of years age. It has 3 heat settings: Too damn hot. Way, way, way too hot. And centre of the sun. It's not much good for grilling food, but it would make a great forge.

Great video. My stove was not pumping and wasn’t regulating properly. I’ve stripped , cleaned and oiled it now thanks to your video and it’s now working a treat.

Great video! Well explained, good lighting and shots. I have a 533 and it only goes on or off... no simmer control. I have a new generator coming but will try rebuilding the valve stem assembly first as per your excellent instructions!

Hi, great video. i have a 440 sitting idle for more than 10 years and this video will definitely help me to get it to run. BTW, i think the long wire in the generator pipe is used more as a control regulator to the jet rather than cleaning the pipe.

Very helpful videos. My stove is not holding pressure … had it for about 30 years … gonna use your comments to hopefully get it going again.

Great video and my advice with any stove or lantern packed away in an unpressurized aircraft or auto travelling up and down aprox 15,000 feet above sea level -> Make sure the device is completely empty of fuel and leave the fuel cap slightly loose to relieve pressure as you change elevations . I found this out the hard way after flying from Kansas to northern New Mexico at 22,000 feet . The little dual fuel developed a leak and a "coleman expert " told me to send it in and have it resealed with a "special thread sealer" . I used common Loctite and it still works great . Thanks for sharing this video. This stove has been misunderstood. I'm so used to seeing this stove erupt into flames when they start it. Like you people probably don't know the prime setting.

You can use orange Teflon tape which is made specifically for gas applications

Hi, I really enjoyed your Coleman stove videos, like disassembling and assembling as well. I must say that is the most complete and best explained video I've seen. But I have a problem, I have a Coleman 533 that the first time worked very well and I used premium gasoline, which was a huge mistake because the stove got was blocked. I disassembled and cleaned the generator, the cable with the hook and also the pump. The problem is that when pumping and out my finger in the tiny hole on the knob, the pumping process becomes too hard not being able to enter pressure by means of the indicated form. There's no pressure entry, not even 1 pump get inside and I think it's already damaged. Please, is there any way to know that I'm doing wrong, or maybe something I have to check out in the stove? I know this is old. You need to turn the pump nob counter clockwise 1 to 1.5 turns to have it work effectively. If it only turns a small amount, you will be pumping and the air will not go in and pressurize the tank. Gripping the nob with a tool may help.

Thank you JIUJITSU. Excellent video. I have a Feather 442 with a very similar generator and valve assembly. Unfortunately, my one has no flame control at all. Burns very well at maximum, but cannot simmer it down: turning the red lever to low, the flame remains the same. At the very leftmost position the flame suddenly dies. I have recognized that the wire inside the generator never sticks out at the other end (at the jet). It seems to be too short. Do you think it can be the cause of the lacking flame control?

do you know what the tank is made of? some of these stoves have metals that rust fairly easily but I've heard that the 400b is "light" which could mean the tank is of a lighter (aluminum?) metal than steel. of course if you find that a magnet is attracted to the tank, well then, IT'S STEEL!

I need to replace the valve stem assembly on my feather 400 b. Do you know which one fits it?

Thanks for these videos. I just won an eBay auction for a Coleman 400A for $12. The seller says it works but I’m expecting eventually perform this type of maintenance. A couple of questions: Do you always use 87 unleaded gas? If so, how often does the generator need cleaning? Can I use a plastic seal from the inside of a 2 liter soda bottle cap to help seal the fill cap?

Thank you! I use low octane because it doesn't have all the additives that foul the generator so quickly. I've only changed the generator tube once. The liter seal for a seal on the fuel cap sounds effective, but I use innertube rubber or o-rings.

Okay, just got the 400A in the mail. I disassembled the same way as this video. The generator is the older style than the one in this video. It has a black knob at the end of it. Anyway, as I was removing the brass fitting at the black knob, the threads and the center pin sheared off clean and left the other half still in the generator. Looks like I’ll be putting another $20 in this project. The valve assembly with the red knob is on the other side and I refurbished it like you did in this video and it seems to be able to hold pressure and releasing it with no hissing on close.

@jiujitsu2000 Thank you for the detailed explanation! Have you found a space efficient way to store and transport this stove I.e empty coffee container or other? I still use the original box and wrap in a garbage bag to protect in rainy conditions. Thank you.

@@jiujitsu2000 Thanks for the quick response. I use my featherlite 400 for canoe trips exclusively with white fuel. Recently it has started to smell as if it is leaking. Do you think it would be a reasonable first step to replace the plunger? I have ordered one through Canadian Tire...seems reasonably priced at $19 CDN compared to other online options. When you transport your single burner coleman stoves whether for backpacking or other purposes, how do you protect it and the fuel dial when packed amongst your gear? Thanks again!

@@noconspiracytheoriesplease.745 Sometimes the pump cup just needs a little bit of oil. But replacing it is never a bad idea either if the old one looks OK when you replace it hang on to it. As far as protecting the dial and stuff during transit I'm just careful where I place it generally in a cardboard Box or against against a corner or something like that where things can't Bang against it

Ah by the way dude, what I wanted to ask still when I saw your light up video of the 400b: I noticed, that you also get this yellowish flame when cranking up the stove to full power. This is the only issue I also have with my 533, eventhough its brandnew and I am only using white gas. Do you know where this comes from? When turning it to mid Power it runs with an awesome blue flame. Thanks man for your help

@@jiujitsu2000 I tried more air, doesnt help. I already pumped it up like crazy. Also noticed, that I always get a yellow flame when cranking up from low/mid to high. Then I always need to wait for some seconds until the flame gets blue. This happens everytime I switch to high. Eventhough the whole stove is heaten up like crazy. Dont really understand that. Maybe I should breakdown the whole stove, Check, and build together again. Mabye this already helps

I have the Dual Fuel 533 stove which is similar to this. My stove however has no flame control and it’ll have blue flame popping a little under the burner ring Assembly and there will be a blue flame coming out from the screw on top of the burner ring assembly. I watched this video and took the entire control valve apart, the plastic part that goes into the tank and the generator totally apart cleaned everything and made sure EVERYTHING was the same in this video and I’m still having the same problems. Any ideas on how to fix these issues?

I just finished cleaning my stove and it's burning much better. I don't have the same visual change in flame intensity you do. Any ideas?

@@jiujitsu2000 I cleaned the generator wire and jet like you did and I hit the generator tube itself with some compressed air. Can you suggest another way to clean it? I'm hesitate to soak it or run a brush through it for fear of leaving something behind and clogging the generator.

hello, I bought coleman 533 10 days ago, I use unleaded gasoline, I burn the stove by following all instructions, but there is a dark leak under the burner during burning, sometimes it turns into a ball of fire. The leak continues even though I clean the generator, please help

Hey, my pricker wire won’t go back in. It seems to catch at the first bend. I’ve tried using the drop of 3-in-1 Oil for lube. Nothing’s worked so far. I don’t want to bend or damage it. Any ideas?

Hey, since I figure it out, I’ll answer my own question for anyone else with this issue. The pricker wire has to round 3 acute angles. The wire is thin and slick to the fingers. I used a small needle nose pliers and GENTLY AND SLOWLY advanced the wire in. You DON’T want to pinch the wire tight because you don’t want to mar it. Just enough grip it. Take your time, use a drop of 3-in-1 Oil if it helps. Take care not to kink the wire or cause a burr on it.

Does anyone know the size of the oring in the valve assembly?

What is the use of that pink finger nails?
