    Great video and a great track man! Do you use any aligning software like Vocalign to get your doubles or harmonies tight time-wise? Also do you EQ your saturated vocals in some specific way? I struggle with mine being a bit harsh and spoiling the overall sound.

  • @MakePopMusic

    @MakePopMusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    I didn't use any time alignement or do slip editing on these. This was just as performed. And I normally cut out a bit of top end and low end when I saturate just to tighten it up a bit! Also, setting up a send or parallel track for saturation can help tame it because you can blend to taste!

    Can you do a video on EQing and compression if you haven't already. Especially on subtractive EQ, as in what to listen for. I know it's subjective but I'd like to see your approach on how you take out the "bad frequencies" and what exactly a "bad frequency" is to you

  • @lifewhyz

    @lifewhyz

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you can't hear the difference between a "bad frequency" and a "good frequency" mixing probably isn't for you. Now, that may sound condescending, but it's true. Either you can hear offending frequencies, and you remove them, or _they're not there to begin with._ There's really no special art to it. I can tell you right now that you'll _start_ hearing them once you start hunting for them, especially in Solo. But that's not necessarily an indication that you found a "bad frequency". Rather, it's an indication that you don't like hearing that frequency all by itself. So to answer your question, what you're looking for isn't "bad frequencies" so much as it is the resonance from frequencies that clash with the key of your song. I don't know if you can read music, so I'll try to keep this simple. The chord of C Major is made up of three notes: C-E-G. So if your song is in the key of C, and you sing in C, E and G, the song will sound good, it's in tune. But when your microphone picks up vocals in your room, it also picks up resonance. And if there's a resonance at D# for example, you're going to hear it. _That's_ what you're trying to remove. But again, if you don't hear it to begin with, it probably isn't there. And *more often than not, this is a problem with instruments, not vocals.* If I had to recommend any plugin to address this issue (when it comes up) it would be Newfangled Audio's EQuivocate by Eventide. You can break the audio up into individual bands which can then be soloed, and then you can pull them out one at a time. Finally, if you are having resonance issues requiring subtractive EQ, I would first _really_ recommend that you work on mic placement and room treatment before using subtractive EQ on vocals. Hope this helps.

    @@lifewhyz so all we're trying to do is get rid of the resonant frequencies? Your explanation makes things a lot clearer. Thanks

  • @lifewhyz

    @lifewhyz

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@kalandemumba4970 Yes. But only those frequencies which would clash with the key of your song. So a resonance might actually sound good depending on what frequency it's in. Resonance is just a build up of frequencies making them louder. It can be good or bad. Again, I hope I didn't sound condescending when I first replied. But I meant it, because some people don't really want to _know_ things, they just want to do them. So I didn't know if you were looking for a magic number, like "attenuate 18,114 kHz and 412Hz 1/4Oct. by 3dB" LOL. But it seems like you genuinely want to know and I was in your position before, so if I can help, I would like to. In fact, as I was typing that, it occurred to me that it might also help you to think of an EQ like a Piano. Then when you imagine the notes on the piano, you can see how they correlate to the frequency range of your EQ and what it is able to manipulate. And that's where Q comes in. When you boost or cut _anything_ the _width_ at which you do it is called the _Q._ Q is measured from 0-100 in most instances. The higher the Q value, the _narrower_ the band you'll affect. And the lower the Q value, the _wider_ the band you'll affect. There are a total of 10 bands from 20Hz to 20,000Hz (20kHz). That basically translates to a keyboard with 10 octaves on it. A wide boost/cut could be as many as be _10 octaves wide,_ whereas a _narrow_ Q might be an octave or less. So when you boost/cut a frequency range with a low Q, it's to change the overall volume across that range. Say, for example you wanted to add some air to your top end, you might boost +1.5dB at 8k with a Q value of 0.20. (Remember, that's 2.0, not 20!) But with a _high_ Q of ~15+ you're affecting a very narrow range. This is what people are talking about when they say "surgical EQ". So if you know the fundamental frequency of your sound, and it's in a certain key, you'll know when you hear something that doesn't sound right. The resonance will literally be out of key. The most common incidence I can think of where I use surgical EQ is on things like toms, snares and sometimes 808s. You might have heard a tinny, pinging sound from them before. It gets really annoying. So to fix that, I would solo the instrument and cycle a small part of your song where the offending frequency plays. Then, I would grab a band on my EQ, I'd narrow it to 100, and boost it _all the way_ up. Then I swipe back and forth over the area where the frequency is coming from and once I've found it, I attenuate it by maybe -7.5dB. Some people will completely remove the frequency. But personally, I think that sounds unnatural. Mixing is about moderation in so many ways. So I try to hide the frequency, not murder it. Otherwise, it's gonna come up missing and people will start asking questions once officer Compression comes looking for it. LOL. Anyway, I hope this helped. If it did, it would be real cool if you could subscribe to my channel in return. There's even a couple old music videos on there from when back when I was rapping. But I'm planning on adding beat mixtapes and tutorials discussing stuff like this if you're interested.
