How To Approach Amino Acid Binding Questions | MCAT Content

Amino acid binding questions can be a bit tricky since they describe a molecule that binds to a particular protein or the environment the protein is in rather than the protein itself. From there you have to extrapolate which amino acids comprise the protein.
These questions are actually easier than they look. By understanding how polarity and charge dictate what kinds of interactions a protein has we can easily answer these questions and pick up more free points about the highest yield topic on the MCAT amino acids.

Literally exactly the video I needed. Thank you. So this a steadfast rule? For the active/binding site of a protein, in general, the {{c1::charge}} of the site should be {{c2::OPPOSITE those of the ligand}}, and the {{c1::polarity}} of the site should be {{c2::the SAME as that of the ligand}}.

Yes this will always work. All we are doing here is applying what we know from intermolecular bonding in chemistry to amino acids.
