How to Apply Walnut Wood Veneer to a Desk Top

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Testing my veneering skills on my desktop. I used a paper thin walnut veneer to cover my old MDF desktops which were always temporary. Finished with an oil stain and lacquer finish coat.

    Nice top. I’m restoring an old antique vanity that belonged to my great grandmother. I was thinking bout doing this to the top also with walnut. Could you list all the finishes and sealers that you used?

    I used a Minwax oil stain for color. Sherwin-Williams vinyl sealer for sanding and finished off with a Sherwin Williams lacquer.

    I plan on doing a very similar veneer with walnut on MDF. Was wondering how your desk has held up so far?

    Thanks for the video. Very informative and encouraging for me to try a veneer project. It looks beautiful. Are these 2 different types of veneer? Looks like those two table tops have different pattern and color. Is it the veneer or may be just the lighting and video shows different results?

    It must be lighting or a slight variation in grain. They came off the same roll. Thanks for watching.

    You make that look so easy. I was planning on doing this to remake a top for my wife's industrial sewing machine. So, following your process, would you recommend cutting out the hole for the machine first or doing the veneer first and then cutting out the hole?

    I would do one large piece and use a trim router to cut the whole out. Thanks for watching. (It's not that hard to be honest, but it is unforgiving once the piece is down).

    Should the iron be used when using either the contact cement or wood glue? Also, would you recommend the contact cement over wood glue for adhesion?

  • @OldGuyWoodworks

    Contact cement is much faster and gives great adhesion. Regular wood glue would be much more forgiving when applying to the surface. You would need an extensive hold down system or vacuum bag.

    hi, so I should put the cement on and wait 15 mins before putting on the veneer? does it need to dry completely or only dry to be tacky?

  • @OldGuyWoodworks

    @OldGuyWoodworks

    I just wait 15 minutes and apply. It doesn't seem to be tacky or dry and you wouldn't think it would bond at all, but it does. It's critical to put the pipes down because once it makes contact, it's not moving. I guess that's why they call it contact cement.

    Excellent video and a great job that was well done. May I ask where you got veneer sheets that wide? The widest i have found are only10-12 inches. Length is not an issue.

    I don't usually do a lot of veneering, so I don't really have a favorite. The one I used here is from Lowe's and it does a good job. Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful. Any opinion on paper-backed vs self-stick veneers re durability ?

  • @OldGuyWoodworks

    @OldGuyWoodworks

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've never used self stick, but I would be afraid of its lack of adhesion over a period of time. Like self adhesive edge banding. That stuff sucks. Thanks for watching.
