How to Apply Unique Textures with a Rolling Mill
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Apply unique and intricate textures to metal with your rolling mill. John Sartin processes many different materials-including card stock and dry organic materials-between two annealed plates of copper sheet metal using his Durston Olivia™ C130 Combination Rolling Mill. He also provides some solid tips on wet versus dry materials, ways to keep your rolling mill running smoothly and preventing potential bodily harm from misuse of your valuable equipment.

Those leaves were beautiful
I'm off work today and you popped up!
Thanks for this very clear explanation. I willl be happy to try soon .Tusiche (thanks in tibetan), tashidelegs (good happy life).
I was surfing around trying to learn how roller mills were used with textured paper and this video explained that and more. I was a commercial jeweler for years and used a rolling mill, but for only mundane tasks like making wire or small sheets. Great video.
Love this!
Great demo!

Thank you Ellesiem! We're working on an unboxing video as well as a maintenance video. I'll post them both here as soon as they're ready.
Could you mention again what you did after rolling the copper with the textured pieces again in order to get the darkened look on the metal? I missed what you said. Thanks
I was told in a class that you cannot use leaves for texture. Thank you for showing how to do it

Great video thanks! I tried using dried seaweed to texture today, but it didn't work out. I used paper around my copper and seaweed rather than two pieces of metal to protect the rollers and on one attempt the rollers just mashed up the paper and seaweed and the imprint was of mashed paper I think. I'm guessing the roller was too tight? In theory dried seaweed should work shouldn't it? What thickness of metal should be used? And does a rolling mill work with blanks or should you only use sheet? TIA, Deb x
Hi, Thank you for a nice video. A saw someone asked about the thickness of the copper sheet but did not see a reply. What is the thickness of the sheet you are printing on please?
Is there any pointers you can give on running a leaf through a Rolling Mill I've gotten it to give some details but not as beautiful as the one you've shown perhaps I'm doing something wrong I do soft in my metal before I feed it through and I have taken your advice to dry my own leaves anyhow would be greatly appreciated also very cool video

I've also tried feathers and they didn't turn out this nice either perhaps
👍👍👍♥️
How thick are the plates you’re imprinting onto? Is there a maximum thickness you would recommend? I know that silver works…what about Bronze?
Just need to check in on this: let's say I want to make just one pendant from a piece of lace or leaf or feather, etc., would I just put my annealed metal with the item on top and roll that through or do I have to make a sandwich with another piece of metal on top of the item? Logically, I don't see why it just couldn't be put through with just the metal and the item, but I always see people putting metal or foam on top (the foam makes no sense to me - why would you put something soft when you want to make a strong impression?). I trust Rio to give me the correct scoop on this. Thanks.

i have this same question! do you have any insight on it now? thanks!
Do u have to anneal dead soft to use the roll mill?
Зачетные вальцы!
I wish somebody would talk about when you get a brand new Rolling Mill and how to use it. I have a brand new Rolling Mill and it's covered in grease or something and I'm not sure how to get started. Can you do a video about that? Thank you

Hi Lisa, we actually have a rolling mill unboxing video in the works. We'll reply here with the link as soon as it is available. As far as the "grease" on the mill, that is to protect the machine from rust during shipping. You can use a white solvent like mineral spirits and a lint-free cloth to remove it.

Can use leather to texture the metal using a rolling mill?
What is the proper way to use a steel plate made for a rolling mill? should the steel side be protected with another piece of metal?

Das sieht mir persönlich zu sehr nach Maschine aus. Gerade die handgeschmiedete Unregelmässigkeit macht das Material für mich interessant. Und die Seele, die das Werstück mit formt...
this feels a bit like cheating haha.
