I would only attempt this on a small area or small project. you could possibly apply gelcoat first in the same colour to build up thickness then finish with flowcoat before rubbing back. however this is not a job I personally would like to undertake and due to the slight differences in batches between gelcoat and flowcoat you could end up with a slight marbled finish or even risk cutting back too far and having to start again. If you were faced with having to do this it would be far easier having it professionally sprayed by a boat builder/restorer as they have specialist equipment and formulated products for re-applying gelcoats or just fairing it off with an epoxy fairing compound and painting it with marine paint. We did have one customer who against our advice tried to do this on one side of his hull, four months later he was back, this time for marine paint and said he'd never attempt that again :-D
