As a draftsman of 30 years plus, the drafting tool you got is a hundred dollar set and German made, I have the same one and recognized the box immediately. Also, your big square eraser for removing your masking is a gum eraser. Enjoyed your tutorial and used my quill pen to apply.

I was pleased to see the draftsman set also. I inherited my father’s set. I still enjoy hearing the sound of the snaps when I open it and it’s smell. I only use them on rare occasions. My set is around 60 years old.

As a graphic designer for over 45 years, the square rubber piece was called a rubber cement pickup in the days of doing "paste-ups" for "camera-ready art" . :-)

I believe this eraser, though the same color as gum erasers, is quite different. It's harder and made specifically for removing frisket. I doubt you'd be able to erase a pencil like with it without damaging your paper. Gum erasers are softer and gentler on paper and would probably disintegrate trying to remove masking fluid.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve been interested in the ruling pen for awhile, just haven’t invested yet. After seeing your examples, I think I like the results of the nib pen the best. I use the W&N masking fluid. I’ve applied with an old brush and an orange stick, which is a wooden stick for pushing back cuticles. It has a pointed and beveled edge.

The nib pen is so good for making fine lines! I've never tried an orange stick, but I've heard it works well.

Thanks for sharing - some great ideas. I would not dip my soapy brush in the full bottle as you are likely leaving some behind. Might be better to decant a bit of the masking fluid and dip the soapy brush in that. :)

That's a pretty nice drafting set. It's a full set of the standard instruments. The one interment not typically included in such sets is a drop bow compass. These are really wonderful for making perfect tiny circles. And, if you can use an inking tip on a regular compass, you'll really love how easy it is to use a drop bow compass.

The idea of last inking pen Is really great ,I had it but didn't know how to use it.

Great informative videos. I would also like to add a few points... 1. When having to apply the MF in a number of areas, rather pour a little in another container so as not to leave the main bottle open for extended periods, as it tends to dry out very quickly. 3. Remove MF from your artwork after a few days. Leaving it on for an extended period may make it extremely difficult to remove and the paper may tear. 3, Store your MF upside down in the fridge to prolong the shelf life of your MF considerably. Hope this helps.

I too had issues with the resist pen. Just like someone else mentioned, I unclogged it with a beading needle. Frustrating, had to clear out the nozzle every minutes 😫. I really appreciate this video 👍

Most important point (no pun intended) of working with a drafting pen is: keep both blades on the paper. That is keep them in a vertical plane to that effect, and some tilt within that plane is permissible. Normally, they're used with straight edges, so dipping is not gets messy because you have to have the outer surfaces totally clean. Eye droppers are the tradition, but I see many getting good results loading a ruling pen with a brush.

That is exactly what I used to unclog the resist pen. But I had to do it every few minutes. Too much trouble for me.

Definitely add water with the soap before dipping the brush in the masking fluid!

There is a fine needle inside the blue cap of the Fineline masking fluid so when you screw lid back on make sure it Is inserted inside the metal point.

I've always wanted to try masking fluid and the only one I can get in my area is the Winsor & Newton one and I have been really hesitant to get it in case I dont like it since it is a bit pricey. but watching this video I see that it isn't so scary to use and im confident to try it out. thank you

With regard to the fineline applicator that blocks with you, try inserting a thin Tailors pin in the applicator nozzle to stop air getting in and the nozzle open

We used to use the plastic tips which slide on for crazy glue type glues and there are many size tips for dotting and for dispensing many things. Very fine and thicker, blunt tipped of course you don't actually want to use a sharp tip. You might find them crafting stores, even hardware stores. Most screw onto the bottles and are very cheap so just throw it away after using, I used to put a long pin such as the ones used to pin on a corsage, or a hat pin type, or even quilting pins then leave it in and pull it out when you go to use it again. You would need to try different things.

I used to have tools for making friskets to do air brushing. Rubber cement was the thing at that time, but you were supposed to let it dry to a light tack before letting it touch the paper. If it was too wet, it would soak into the paper and tear the paper up when removed. I have to wonder if these would have been better for that.

i bought the fine liner type but the moment i put it work, it squirted out very watery substance and i had no idea what to do with it after that. I did give it a shake before use.

Yes the tool with the needle like nozzle can be a pain. I’d suggest having a bowl of soapy water nearby. Dunk it, dry one end and blow out the remaining fluid.

Clever idea to use a nib!

Those fineline tips come apart into 3 pieces. Pull apart and i use the needle from the cap and tweezers to clean the tip. Takes patients but worth it i think. Always push back into the nozzle not out, and store it upside down so it doesn't have a chance to dry in the nozzle.

I’ve never tried it with acrylics, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Those fineline masking pen bottles are supposed to have a “needle” inside the cap that fits down inside the very thin metal tube you use to draw with. It’s supposed to keep the tube from clogging and is part of the cap. Yours looks to be missing but you can use a floral wire or sewing needle to push out any gunk. Warming it a bit like in some hot water helps too. The fountain pen 🖋️ or a scroll calligraphy pen work best with applying the liquid masking.

I had a wire in the cap, but it didn’t seem to be long enough to clear the whole tube. I like a calligraphy pen as well. Simpler to use!

@@SusanMonroeArt Oh I can relate! I hate trying to unclog stuff by trying to find something to jam into it! It’s frustrating and sometimes a total waste of time! I’ve gotten things stuck, stabbed myself, broke things off, and caused a mess! You can actually buy replacement needle caps for those type bottles if you feel it necessary. I sometimes dip tips (for glues like E6000) in Vaseline before putting on the cap or I plug up the squeeze hole with a long nail (like for caulking). But some things are just easier to use by dipping into them rather than squeezing! Thanks for your videos! Maybe this could inspire your next video?

Use a pin and make sure to To unclog that bottle, Wash off after every use. I havent tried it with masking fluid but i use the same type of bottle with glue for quilling.

Ask a guitar playing friend to send you some steel guitar string scraps. They come in different gauges, and there might be one of a size that adequately cleans the tube.

Thank you for the tutorial! I was unaware of the variations in masking fluid, personally I’m only familiar with the marker. I read that rubber erasers may work for removing marker fluid, are there any other options that you know of? I do not have access to a sponge currently. Also, I’ve had this masking fluid on my watercolor paper for at least a week now 😬 do you think that affects the removal of it at all?

I've had masking fluid on for over a month and not had any problems. I think it just depends on the brand. That said, the marker kind can be more difficult to remove if it's on for a long time, so be careful about that. Thanks for watching!

Very helpful video. I might suggest a tip for using the Fine Line applicator. It does clog easily. You can unclog it by inserting a long quilting pin through the hole. These are very fine/thin pins and are about 2 in long so they can go all the way through the tube. I find that my hand gets tired very quickly when using that tool because you have to exert pressure on the bottle to squeeze it out. So I don’t use it much. I’ve been told you can dilute your masking fluid with a little water to make it flow easier. What do you think of that? Do you see any issue using diluted fluid? Thanks very much!

Thank you for posting, I’ve tried using my nibs for masking and can’t get it to flow without applying pressure which can score the paper. Can you share your favorite nib for doing this.

I wish I knew a foolproof trick for preventing this! It still sometimes happens to me. I think the best thing to make sure of is that your masking fluid is liquid enough that it flows really smoothly from the nib. I tend to press harder when the masking fluid is having problems flowing easily. I hope this helps!

a hard fiber masking nib pen also works great and they have shapes to give wider shapes some fluid.

I use toothpicks. Rubber stylus for sculpture didn't work well but I've used ink nibs on pen handle and brush ends and ruling pen

I use a stippling tool. It works great and wipe when through because it’s metal. 👍There are different sizes of this tool to allow how much you want on your paper. Great video ❤️

Would it would work to paint a watercolor wash on paper, then print masking fluid over that with leaves, then paint over the leaf prints? I do this on silk with water based resist (see my video). I spread the resist on a table, press the leaf into the resist then onto the silk. My concern is if the masking fluid would dry too fast to print, or if it might be stringy like rubber cement. I do have some gutta, a rubber based silk resist, not sure how that compares with masking fluid, or if it would work on paper.

You can also use a silicone brush. Masking fluid does not stick to it. They can be ordered on Amazon as a kit with several size brushes in it. Use it and wipe it off with your fingers.

So a few things about the fineline, your meant to unscrew the plastic top and remove the blunt needle tip after your done using it and while its still wet use the wire built in to the cap. If you forget and the masking fluid clogs it i take a torch style lighter and heat the metal tube of the needle for a few seconds and it will cook up the latex and usually you will hear a little pop noise and it should be unclogged! Make sure you take the needle put beforw you heat it or else you can accidently flood the hot barrel with masking fluid and it will gum it back up. And fyi the gum erasers for removing the fluid? They sell them at my dollar tree and ive seen them in other dollar trees around seattle area.

molotow stuck fast to my paper , rains 100% cotton 300gsm, couldnt get it off .

I had Molotow ruin a piece as well. I think that it just can't be left on very long without becoming like glue. I would love to mention that in the video, but don't know how to change it now.

Very helpful. Too bad I watched it AFTER I bought the Fineline making fluid. I wonder if I could use the liquid from that with a pen nib, brush, or ruling pen. I assume it’ll work, but I can see how that fine tube would just gum up.

Love this video. Masking is something new to me, so I learned a ton here! You've probably already figured out a solution, but try soaking it in warm, soapy, water. ;) That should loosen the clog enough that you can eventually wash it out.

I found it difficult to remove the W&N fluid and pulled some of the paper up with it. I’m using 300gsm 100% cotton paper. I’m wondering whether I used too much water and maybe it wasn’t dry enough, or I may have used too much soap and water on the brush before using the fluid. Please help

I'm sorry you had a problem with the masking fluid. When using soap and water on the brush, make sure the brush isn't full of water. It should just be damp with soap on it before you dip it in the masking fluid. I hope this helps!

I think thin iron wires would be best solution.

Does the soap not contaminate and eventually ruin your remaining masking fluid?

How long before a product of masking fluid becomes rubbery? I'm trying out mine right now and it's very rubbery, not at all fluid like shown in this video. But the thing is that I'm pretty sure that this bottle wasn't much better when I bought it, maybe a bit but I don't remember it ever being as loose and fluid as in this video so now I'm thinking that the bottle that I bought was on it's deathbed even when I bought it... And that was maybe 2 years ago if I'm guessing maybe 3 tops. I think I seriously need a new bottle cuz this one is close to useless and gave a really streaky result as I couldn't apply it evenly and if I tried adding more it stuck to itself and pulled off the previous masking so yeah... But how can I make sure that I don't accidentaly buy an expired product again? Cuz I can't see that there's a date printed anywhere or expiration date.

That's such a good question! Unfortunately I don't know how long a bottle of masking fluid lasts before it goes really bad. I buy a new one every few months and so far I don't think I've gotten any that's already old. I would definitely buy a new bottle if you're having problems!

I just used a cheap one I got at Barnes and nobles a long time ago.

To prevent fine line applicator from clogging hold upright and squeeze to expel any fluid remaining in the syringe and then insert a long feeds maker's bead tipped pin. To unclog you can order ultra fine twist still bits from machinists supply houses but you need to know inside diameter of the syringe and the bits are expensive. Very.

@@SusanMonroeArtHi Susan. Squeezing the bottle only works to prevent clogging by forcing air through the needle and ejecting the wet fluid after you use it. Once clogged it won't help. Unfortunately. I was lucky and was able to use a jewelers file to file through the needle on one and snap it to a length short enough to push a very small needle through it. Once I figures out how to clear the needle after use I've had no problems. Thanks for the name of the pin. I didn't know what they were called. I hate spell checkers. What in the world is a feeds maker's pin? Hur hur huuuuuurrrr...

The music at the is a loud when you use head phones and even when not. Then volumne is low for you. Soak in dish detergent & use a pin or a thin piece of wire to open it.

No. The soap doesn’t have any effect on the masking fluid. It just sticks to the bristles of the brush and protects them from getting sticky.

The color very likely will glow under ultraviolet light. Be sure to shake the bottle to distribute evenly the color which sometimes is orange in your masking fluid bottle

I know that it can be hard to see. I’ve recently started using Pebeo Drawing Gum. It comes in a bottle like Windsor and Newton’s but is blue tinted and easier to see on the paper. That might work better for you. I wish I could add it to this video!

The resist pen needs to be opened on the blue part only. It actually unscrews on 3 places. The cap and bottle, the white part and the cap (the yellow piece will be showing at the bottom of the needle) and the blue cap can be unscrewed from the middle white piece. There is a tiny metal insert that needs to be put back inside the needle after ever use. DefinitelyNOT my favorite masking fluid lol

I shake it to evenly distribute the yellow coloring that makes the fluid easier to see, otherwise the yellow color all settles at the bottom of the bottle. The bubbles aren’t a problem for me - I just dip my pen through them into the masking fluid. But if you don’t want to shake it, then don’t. It’s up to you. 🙂

To avoid bubbles, just roll it between your hands gently like fingernail polish.
