Yeah, came to say this. If you tell someone from Philly that cheez wiz doesn't belong on a cheese steak, they will think you are from Philly. If you go to any non-tourist cheese steak place and order a "cheese steak" without specifying the cheese, they will put white american cheese on it.
My favorite Philly diss is how people say the food is unhealthy. Hey, we never said an authentic Philly cheesesteak would help you lose weight or lower your cholesterol. Just eat it & be happy.

That last line couldn’t be more on point! Well said. And I love the sarcasm. In Philly, busting people’s chops is a cultural norm. Many visitors take it as rudeness because they’re not used to sarcasm flowing so freely. If you’re a visitor or prospective visitor reading this, one hugely beneficial piece of advice- take everything a local says as sarcasm first. If we say something rude, don’t take it personally. If we really intended to be mean, we’ll make that clear😂

Philly native weighing in: 1. Sports - Yeah, but I feel like this is anywhere. Don't make fun of the home sports team for any city you are visiting. 2. Cheez Wiz - Philly people don't eat wiz. Tourists eat wiz. American cheese is the standard, provolone is less common but totally normal, Wiz is what out of town people tell out of towners to eat. Here's another tip - tourist places make the worst cheese steaks because they use cheez wiz which is REALLY high in salt, so they don't season the meat. Normal places put salt and pepper on the meat, since they are going to use American and Provolone most often. 3. Food - He hit this. The roast pork sandwich is the real Philly sandwich. We have amazing fine dining as well that gets really overlooked by anyone except people who have visited. We also have a history of good food. "Philadelphia Cream Cheese" is from New York state, but they branded it with "Philadelphia" in 1880 because we had a reputation for high quality food. 4. Rocky Statue - He's right, we don't really care. The statue used to be at the stadiums in deep South Philly, and a lot of the city was pissed when they moved it to the Art Museum because we felt it belonged with the sports, not overshadowing our absolutely amazing Art Museum which is absolutely a point of pride for the city. 5. Parking - No shit, if you pointed out someone's illegally parked car to the PPA (Philadelphia Parking Authority), you legit could get stabbed if it was the wrong person. There's nobody in the city more universally hated than the PPA. Not only do they ticket us for everything, they show us how efficient the government can be if they actually cared/tried. The absolute best working part of the government in Philadelphia is the one that steals your money, so it's a total insult to injury for the whole city. And I say "steal" because they are notorious for making up tickets and then having traffic court side with them 100% of the time, even when it's blatantly obvious that the parking officer lied. They once ticketed a doctor who pulled his car over to render medical aid to a person having a seizure in the street.
As a lifelong Philadelphian ...... the debate of cheez-wiz or not is a very SERIOUS one ..... for me its all about the American cheese OR provolone; Oh - and as great as a cheese steak is - the Roast Pork with Broccoli Rabbe is the hidden gem for people coming to visit!

Went to wrestlemania 40 in Philadelphia and the people were so nice. Everyone was awesome.
I grew up in Pennsylvania so I know all about the "Philly Attitude." This is the thing: Philadelphians are no more or less annoyed by stuff than the average person from anywhere else. The only difference is that Philadelphians openly express exactly how they're feeling right there at that moment. Then as fast as they let it out, they move on and act as if it never happened. There's no such thing as "bottling up your feelings" or "smiling in your face but walking away complaining behind your back" in Philly. People just simply don't function that way. It's a very "what you see is what you get" culture. The sooner you learn to adjust to that, the better you'll be able to get along with the locals. Don't take anything personally. Philadelphians are coconuts. They're hard on the outside but breaking through that shell, you'll find truly good, down to earth, friendly people. I remember being in the subway station and getting ready to get tokens (back when septa still used tokens). A random guy came up and asked if I had an extra token for the subway. I gave him one. I accidently dropped my only other token on the ground and it rolled into a drain. He saw what happened and gave my token back to me and said "It's the thought that counts man." That would never in a million years happen in San Francisco, LA, or most other cities. There's a soul to Philly that's just an acquired taste. I do miss it sometimes.

Native Philadelphian transplanted to Florida: The third biggest difference after the percentage of gun ownership and the tendency to elect governors that would let your children die if it meant getting re-elected is Floridians can't handle the direct approach to their face ( perhaps explains gun ownership). Like the Klingons say: " If you offended me you would have no need to ask."

I recently chose to move from NYC to Philly. I LOVE Philly! On the merits of what the city has (food, cultural amenities, events), it’s 90%-95% as good as NYC, but my rent is literally less than 1/3 the price for something identically nice in NYC (neighborhood, green space access, transit access, …).
I live in Bel-Air now with my auntie and uncle but I was born and raised in West Philadelphia. Fond memories of hanging out on the playground most of my days. One day I was chillin out, playing some b-ball outside the school, when a couple of guys were up to no good and started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and she sent me on the very first flight to Bel-Air.

As someone who grew up in the Greater Philadelphia area, the debate on what type of cheese belongs on a cheesesteak is actually a pretty funny and recurring debate that Philadelphians routinely have lol. Mark, you missed what I think is a really important one that annoys me to no end. Never say the words "Downtown Philadelphia" because it doesn't exist. Non-Philly people do this frequently though I can't blame them. And what non-Philly or a tourist thinks is "Downtown Philadephia" is always known as "Center City". No Philly native I know ever refers to Center City as "Downtown". Also, when eating at Reading Terminal Market and you are sitting at a table, leave it the second you are done. Nothing more annoying that having people hanging out and the cheesesteak wrappers are empty and the soda cups are empty while there are at least 20 other people with food and drinks in their hands waiting the grab your seat though the locals and fast-learning tourists know to grab an empty table and hold it the second one becomes available. Some smaller annoyances: 1) No one in Philly I know of calls Delco (Delaware County) and the other surrounding counties the "collar counties". That was a term made up by the national media to interpret Phillly election results. 2) Don't say that the Phillies blue/yellow "City Connect" jerseys look awesome 3) don't run yellow lights, the timing of the yellow lights in Philly is like 5 seconds. 4) don't diss the 6 ABC Action News theme song. It's over 50 years old, but its an unofficial Philly anthem.

The PPA might just be my archenemy
People spent way too much time being upset by what other people wear, like to eat, what sports teams they life, etc. Who cares? Just go on about your day and get over yourself. People who complain while traveling should just stay home. People who want to see the world and enjoy other cultures and customs, go ahead! Don't worry about what other people think.
I was driving through the city . stopped at Philadelphia downtown. City was beautiful. However i was underwhelmed by the philly cheese steak, it didn’t have many condiments. As an overseas tourist, i was walking very slow and stopping and looking at beautiful buildings and I think people said excuse me a few times, which really annoyed me because I don’t have eyes at the back of my head and they should be walking around me and not making me feel like I should get out of the way.
Do you recommend any bars in Amsterdam?

Hell, if you wear the opposite teams jersey to an eagles game. You will get unopened cans of beer thrown at you, among other things.
Have you ever been to the Canary Islands? (Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura)
Philly local here. PPA is not effective and really doesn't ticket easily. Drivers here just want to be able to park wherever they want. They'll park on sidewalks, in bike lanes, on crosswalks, etc, and they'll rarely get ticketed for it. It's not just a matter of being "slightly wrong".
You got street cred now 😉😛
cheese wiz is great on pretzels XD i normally go for fried onions and provolone ❤ are we annoyed... hmm... only if you're trying to drive in center city or let alone on 76 and get in my way on my commute!! 😅other than that i dont "think" we are 💁🏻♀

I live near philly for past 10 years. The sports thing I say iffy. I go to eagles games in cards gear.. just remember it's the city of brotherly love they Will bust your balls but if you can give it back in a brotherly way you'll fit in.
We got a place for those who persistently annoy us Philadelphians. We introduce them to The Tinicum Swamp.
You forgot "Be Santa Claus". All jokes aside, I like Philly. Great museums, good food, good urbanism, a lot to like.
I went to Philly to visit my aunt. At a mall, no one looked at me, like I was not even there, and everybody looked almost exactly like me. It was very different from where I live now in the Midwest, and very different from western Virginia, where I grew up. It was weird. We weren't there long. In Virginia and where I live now, in an Irish area and, now, German area, up here, I stand out. Not there! I guess it's like New York, but, apparently, more Scottish and Italian. In Virginia, most parts, you're almost forced to be friendly. I don't like the obligation. In Philadelphia, people seemed like expressionless, walking statues. Culture shock! I'll have to give it another try! We stayed with my aunt last time and didn't venture out.
I would imagine if they knew I call it 'Philthydelphia', that might annoy them. Don't tell them.
Bill Burr is going to have another special now that you posted this.
Dont go to Kensington or Allegheny Avenue ar any tome of day. Way too dangerous!
I wear my Yankees and Giant jerseys all the time. Cheesesteaks? Wit or Witout? Tayor Ham or Pork Roll gets it every time. Stay outta South, West Philly and any other neighborhoods that you don't belong in. Stay in Center City or commute on SEPTA from the burbs.
I'm living proof that Cheez Whiz is good for you.
What about quoting “Always Sunny”?
As a Philadelphian I do most of the things you're not supposed to do.
Moved from Chicago to Florida; 10 years ago, WOW! so many New York, Boston, East Coasters here...the small towns are like Alabama and New York had a baby. ;-) Dukes of Hazard vibes! If you have kids choose a good private School. Most parents just let there kids hang, . Which leads to drugs, drinking, pregnant. before 18...Keep your kids in sports and less time on Social media...Plan vacations with your kids, also Pick a good Gated Community with Strong family values...
Me: exists *angry Philadelphian noises*
as a local I can attest that it's true you should not say anything bad about the eagles or phillies, I have seen multiple stabbed and beaten in the street over their sports teams, the cheese whiz thing is only for those who think pats and genos are actually food, It should go without saying NEVER point out anyone car to the parking authority no matter where you are (philly folk don't like snitches) The rocky statue will make a few people miffed but nothing dangerous like the sport teams or ratting someone out to the parking cops. Be safe out there, it's a pretty dangerous city in many parts. R.I.P. Kensington

That’s actually not true. We have several real boxing champions. As for the statue part, “yet” is the most important word to add there. BHop will have one someday. And growing up in the pro boxing community, I can tell you that the Rocky statue kinda represents us all. It’s based on a fictional character but it’s been adopted by the whole area. We have too many great boxers throughout history to make a statue of them all.
As someone born just outside of Philly, this title cracked me up. If you don’t want to annoy someone during your time during Philly, try not existing. If that doesn’t work you can always say “Go Cowboys”. But in all seriousness don’t take it personal it’s just Philly.
Why would somebody care of not upsetting the thugs who booed Santa during a hockey game?
The roaming zombies bother me more than I could ever bother a Philly resident.
I’m from Philadelphia and I moved out. How to annoy Philadelphians: 1. Tell them that they are wannabe New Yorkers. 2. Tell them that cheese steaks are disgusting. 3. Tell them to shut the hell up when they get loud. 4. Stay in the parking space with your engine running. 5. Park in open parking spots in front of row homes. 6. Tell them that they are not, and never were, and never will be Irish.
