How to analyse sculpture - the four types of relief | Citaliarestauro.com

if we consider a statue according to its shape, it can be either free-standing or a relief.
A free-standing statue is, as the name itself implies, a statue that is surrounded by free space on all sides and supports its own structure. It is usually placed on a base (like a pedestal or a plinth, for instance) .
In a relief, the shape is still physically connected to its support. It is classified according to the degree of image projection. Thus we have:
a) High relief (in Italian: alto-rilievo) - more than half of the surface protrudes from its support, and there may even be parts of the sculpture that are completely undercut.
b) Mid-relief (mezzo-rilievo) - an intermediate projection relief.
c) Low-relief (basso-rilievo, or in French: bas-relief) - the carvings are lighter and more subtle, with a minor projection.
d) Sunk relief - the shape is achieved through incisions to the support material.
