Do not try this if you are not comfortable taking a knife apart. We suggest that the first time you try this do it with the knife you value LEAST, in case something goes wrong. Mistakes are the best way to learn. We do not accept responsibility for any problem you face or create. Adjust/fix your knife at your own risk.

Hi Jake! Three weeks ago, I wasn't paying much attention to chinese knives and never made serious researches about Ganzo. Now, I'm waiting for my first Gearbest order and I already know how to fieldstrip and maintain the knives before I even used them. Your channel certainly started something! Thanks for your good work.

That is one option too. Sometimes only having one spring may cause some minor biding issues which is why I didn't recommend it in the video but for someone who knows well what they are doing that can work just fine.

thank you for the pimp your ganzo knife tutorial. now if I run into somebody that has ganzo axis lock that's too tight I can refer them to your video and won't have to state that old Marine Corps Heavy Equipment Mechanic motto of, "if I can't fix it...I'll fix it so nobody else can." 🔧

"pimp" eh?! Well, that's not a word this old fart would use for it, but I know what you mean. :) As I mentioned above in response to Michael, doing it 3 or 4 times because of making very small changes is better than once where the change is too much, because it is hard to reverse the change without breaking the spring.

With the blade opened about half an inch or so, stick the smallest allen wrench (1.5) into the axis lock opening. Then open up the blade slowly, but not all the way. The allen wrench will force/ stretch the spring and viola, tension on the axis lock is reduced without opening up the knife.

I have found if you leave the knife half open for a couple of days this will soften the spring nicely, it works on back locks too

I've seen others recommending softening the spring by jamming the axis lock open overnight by putting a screwdriver through the hole, might give that a try.

Thanks, I need to soften the spring on my new F740 and this helps. Wiha drivers are lovely tools - Wera is another German brand which is just as good IMO, and I have more of those than Wiha, mainly because they're easier to find here in the UK.

Most people make the mistake and soften them TOO MUCH. Less is often enough, especially when the knife is new because there is a bit of a break in period for those springs. Good luck.

Beta Tools from Italy are great too, and my main go-to workshop screwdriver set is all Beta, but I'd have to say Wera Kraftform are my absolute favourites. They make excellent bit driver sets too, with handles that the bit never ever falls out of!

Old video, i know, but a little tip for when using pliers on disassembly. You can use a rubber glove or piece of inner tubing from a tire over the the bit you're holding with pliers. It adds extra grip, and won't cause any scratches or dents.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

Thanks for the suggestion. I also sometimes use a little hot glue (let it cool) sometimes on pliers, or a bit of tape of various types, but my guess is that inner tubing would do very well, I will have to try it.

Good pointers. I usually take them completely apart and polish washers and moving parts but it is a pain to put it back together. You should also note that the spring activates the axis lock but also keeps the knife closed (blade retension). I softened the springs on my g720 but had to retension it as the blade opened way too easily when I didn't want it to open, and I wasn't able to fully flick it open. Very heavy blade on that model.

That is some very good advice. I do basically the same, re: washers, but to include that in this video would make it too long and I am saving some of that for a tutorial on making your folder open more smoothly. Just yesterday I finally got the pkg of 100 bronze washers I had ordered. For any fix that allows you do make changed in degrees of change like how much change to do to the springs, or in my next tutorial I talk about fixing early lockup. It is easy to make to much of an adjustment. it is always best to do very small changes and have to do it 3 or 4 times till you like it instead of one big change where you've gone too far.

If you have a small soldering iron then heat it up and press the tip into the screw head to heat up and weaken the grab of the threadlocker. Ganzo have a history of using different strengths of loctite on the same knife and it can get very frustrating trying to strip your knife down. There are a couple of tricks to help the Torx drivers grip better. Make sure the driver is fully engaged in the head of the screw - some bottom out on the screw head before engaging the splines fully. A dip into a tiny bit of valve grinding paste or something similar will help the driver grip the screw head more efficiently. Be very careful to remove all traces of the grit from tools before storing and screws after dis-assembly. Hope this helps.

This works great, but on one of my ganzo after I did this the upper stop pin rattles. No matter what I do to tighten it wont go away. Have you ever had this happen? The knife functions fine and lock up is good when knife is open but for some reason when knife is closed that stop pain rattles.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

No, it has never happened to me. The most likely reason it would be loose is that the body screws and pivot screws are not as tight as they originally were. Do you also have side to side play in the blade? If yes, then that is exactly what the problem is. You can email me if you want further advice or troubleshooting. canadiancuttingedge AT gmail.com

I have not bought a Benchmade - yet, but I have heard that some people have used benchmade springs on their Ganzo's because it is hard to get replacements from Ganzo. they need to do better customer service for people on this side of the planet, but then I have had over 35 axis lock Ganzo's and I have never needed to replace any of the springs yet.

I buy almost all my Chinese knives from GearBest. i have found the prices to usually be better than FastTech but not always, and I have had VERY poor customer service at FastTech. Also, I do pay by PayPal but I don't use the first opportunity that they give to pay, I choose "Proceed to Checkout" where I can then have more options for shipping and I select "Royal Mail" instead of "Auto (free)" because then the pkg is still free shipping but it is posted from Britain and it arrives here to Canada faster.

Yes, this method will work on any and every axis lock system. If a knife is not like this then it is not actually an axis lock but something else.

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

I looked up your knife. Those have a nasty sharp edge on the bar you have to grab. That is a large part of your problem and this method won't take that sharpness away.

No need disasembly knife; only drop some oil and pull back to maximum axis lock spring and hold in that position few minute. That all:) If you try disasembly is very possible to broken the screw..

  • @CanadianCuttingEdge

    @CanadianCuttingEdge

That is one method that works if a small adjustment is needed. for a more significant adjustment, it needs MUCH more than a few minutes. I have tried exactly what you suggest, but with the lock, arm forced back and wedged in place for many hours without enough effect - that is why I made that video as I did. Your method is a good thing to try first, but if that method doesn't do enough then people can try my method.

That's too bad. Do you know about a product called JB Weld? IF you don't mind doing a permanent change to the knife, you can get some of that stuff and add a bit on top of the axis lock ends to make it smoother for your finger and thumb. It is a paste that is a lot like very very thick epoxy but it hardens into a steel like product (My brother used it to repair an engine block mount hole for an alternator - it is VERY strong stuff) If you use JB Weld it will never come off, but I think it's a good way to make your knife better if you don't mind doing something like that to the knife. You can always use a steel file to file it down if you use too much.

This is the video that killed it for us benchmade owners! They seen how a spring in a ganzo is pretty much like their own! And they don't ship springs to benchmade owners in case they were going into these ganzo frauds! I tried to ask for springs they refused because of videos like these! Now we have to Ship knives back thanks Jake! I know your a Chinese product guy but why get benchmade in a knot! U ruined it for lots now! And ganzo don't provide pocket clips or life time warranty do they! Now they see u doing that now they think everyone is doing it to their benchmades wow!

I don't accept the credit for that. Look at how few views I have on this video, and this info has been out for MUCH longer by others before I posted it. I think you give me more credit as one to have the ability to influence Benchmade to make such decisions. I don't think I have that kind of power. (I think they had their policy of not shipping out omega springs well before I made this video).

Thanks for the comment. My goal is not to make the most minimalist videos that I can, if that is what I wanted to make then I certainly could have made that. The information that you see as unnecessary fluff is information that some knife newbie will find useful. Not every viewer is at the same place in the knife hobby as another viewer is. I would much rather make a video that has too much information than one that misses even one small point, so I err on the side of verbosity.
