They have a lot of assistants. In a case of a popular series, there's an assistant for screentone asssertion, background, panels and dialogue boxes. Original mangakas only draw the subjects.

That's a thing I see in manga about mangaka. Whete they would try out using screentones for the first time and ended up cutting all the way to the paper.
My life has been a lie! I've always believed that mangakas drew screentones by hand. haha 😂 Edit: ppl chill. you can't always assume that everyone else knows what you know. this comment is literally 3 years old and I already knew screentones the moment I watched this vid and typed the comment geez. Edit 2: also, what I meant by drawing it by hand is drawing each dots and line individually. dumb thought but ye バカみたいですみません。

Some of them apply by hand just to get better ratings on art and to boost their manga's rankings in their magazines to keep it from getting cancelled, there are screen tones available for cutting and pasting but you can draw them by hand if you prefer to draw it on your own.
Your manga looks so fucking cool.

that's an advance industrial use for lotto tickets mask, you kinda need to talk to the printer guys at the factory. And there is a special printer that does that or even now a laser. Either way digital is cheap try applying a full page screen tone in corel draw and cut parts of it should be a similar experience.

Digital screetones can be also time consuming, they just cost less. I feel that the traditional tones gives a more beautiful image. Digital is so perfect that it is cold, whereas traditional seem more manual, artistic. I do both when I don’t have my traditional one, but the difference is very striking for me.

Man, this is beautiful! I admire digital art but traditional is my passion, I love the fact of everything made by hand! Great video!
You draw so beautifully... And it was so pleasing to see the process of applying the screentone :D
This is such a cool video, thank you for satisfying my curiosity...but like dude, you are so crazy skilled. Watching the way you handle your tools and watching how smoothly you can cut with an exacto knife is just amazing. I can't believe you had so much control when you were retracing the perfectly straight lines to cut out the screentone. What a legend.
Yes! Been waiting for a traditional screen tone video 😊
your work is so amazing and breath taking. I love it!
Wow! This is more fun than doing it digitally! Thanks for sharing this🖤
I can tell by watching the way you handle your materials that you really know what you're doing! Totally gonna subscribe.
This just popped up in my recommended and I stared away at my screen in satisfaction :0. You are very skilled. Nice manga!
WoW your comic looks so amazing, like it was really done by some top tier mangaka, and you even do most of it traditionaly, looks so great
Ngl I'm so impressed that this was done on paper. Truly amazing
Thanks for this video man- I found it really helpful and eye opening
I always knew that mangakas hand cut the little screens thanks to those few episodes of crayon shin chan I watched as a kid, he was visiting the home studio of someone who creates manga with his mom. I think now most people do it digitally since it is pretty expensive.

Same here.i watched that episode about that.
man i remember seeing that in monthly girls' nozaki kun and that sounds like a pain to go to the store and stockpile screentones, now that we've got digital stuff it'd prolly save some money and time, but doing it traditionally sounds admirable and cool
I’ve read some of the first chapter of your book on your website, AND GOD I WISH I COULD BUY IT
your speech bubbles, perspective, action and line arts gave me strong bleach vibe dood good work
great explanation. screentones give that old school vibe. great job. very imformative.
Wow bro I never knew this was how this is done. Found this video on accident and I don't even read comics but this is so so cool. Great explanation. Thanks dude
Wow that is amazing how you turned a pencil drawing into a manga panel!! Very impressive! I came for understanding screentones, they are basically uniform shading I suppose! And it's application was very fascinating!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I am making some fanart to make a T-shirt for myself and showing this was really helpful! Thank you man! If you ever creat a paid online course I'll be there for it!!
Your art style is so stunning
10/10 great job aside from me learning how they add in that texture (I literally thought they just put it in using a computer) I learned how to create proper boxes like that one thank you.
I only recently heard about screentones, and while I was aware that manga artists sometimes used razors, I thought it was to assist in drawing some geometry, like making a paper doll. I had no idea that applying shading to a character, aside from cross hatch, was done with this collage method, I thought it was all inked in. The thought that a manga page is submitted with multiple layers of material on it sounds crazy but now in hindsight it makes total sense 😅
Wow, this is just so satisfying to watch.
This is a lot of help. Im making my own personal manga as of now. This will really help me
This was very helpful! Thank you!!
It's so cool that you've managed to make something with your artwork and your skill. I'm still here racking my brain on whether I should make my novel idea into a novel or graphic novel or just make a novel with very many illustrations a la Alexandre Dumas' classics. :/
Just seeing you draw is very inspirational!
thanks dude this was a really big help!
I can see the disadvantages with doing screentone traditionally but i can't help but admire the process, that is one beautiful and unique craftsmanship!
That was the coolest thing i've ever seen!!!
Really nice tutorial keep em coming!
Thanks for the vid!
I love traditional screentones, but they're ridiculously expensive outside of Japan so I'm sticking to Manga Studio for a while... Thanks for the video! I'm gonna order your manga on payday next week. It looks really cool! :)
Thank you for sharing how it's done traditionally. It's always been a mystery for me.
Foarte foarte bine! Mă plăceam! ❤️❤️
If that is actually your whole tankoban manga book, I am Soo blown away!! It's Soo professional!!! Judging by the facial artstyle, I'd say you are a fan and strongly inspired by the cool artstyle of Bleach!!

Great vid.
nice so classic and nostalgic
Hey thanks for making this video. I don't see myself using traditional screen tones anytime soon, but I was curious to know how it was done.
Used to (like 10 years ago) have a book about manga drawing that has quite some pages about various techniques of applying screentones. And now that I actually start drawing manga, I just use digital screentones. Like, yeah it's also on the pricey side (it takes a pretty high resolution monitor to display correctly) but just so much faster
Wow your comic looks so well done. Where do you get it printed? It's so cool.
My left ear fucking loved this
Thank u for tips
Its interesting to see how far technology has come. You can make any kind of art digitally and itd look like it came traditionally
I like your art style a lot, it reminds me of kubo's style in bleach
Just got my copy of vol1&2 of apple black
Bro your really good
just recently subbed. your drawings look very similar to the style of Bleach; which is really awesome. do you watch a lot of Bleach?
your art style reminds me of Bleach's Kubo Tite. Nice!
This makes being a manga artist feel like a surgeon.
After a 5 year break from drawing I’ve made the ambitious decision to make my own manga. I was thinking about inking traditionally, and then slapping it into procreate for the screen tones, but this has peaked my interest in continuing the traditional route. Great work!
