They have a lot of assistants. In a case of a popular series, there's an assistant for screentone asssertion, background, panels and dialogue boxes. Original mangakas only draw the subjects.

Some of them apply by hand just to get better ratings on art and to boost their manga's rankings in their magazines to keep it from getting cancelled, there are screen tones available for cutting and pasting but you can draw them by hand if you prefer to draw it on your own.

that's an advance industrial use for lotto tickets mask, you kinda need to talk to the printer guys at the factory. And there is a special printer that does that or even now a laser. Either way digital is cheap try applying a full page screen tone in corel draw and cut parts of it should be a similar experience.

Digital screetones can be also time consuming, they just cost less. I feel that the traditional tones gives a more beautiful image. Digital is so perfect that it is cold, whereas traditional seem more manual, artistic. I do both when I don’t have my traditional one, but the difference is very striking for me.

I only recently heard about screentones, and while I was aware that manga artists sometimes used razors, I thought it was to assist in drawing some geometry, like making a paper doll. I had no idea that applying shading to a character, aside from cross hatch, was done with this collage method, I thought it was all inked in. The thought that a manga page is submitted with multiple layers of material on it sounds crazy but now in hindsight it makes total sense 😅

Hey thanks for making this video. I don't see myself using traditional screen tones anytime soon, but I was curious to know how it was done.

Used to (like 10 years ago) have a book about manga drawing that has quite some pages about various techniques of applying screentones. And now that I actually start drawing manga, I just use digital screentones. Like, yeah it's also on the pricey side (it takes a pretty high resolution monitor to display correctly) but just so much faster

After a 5 year break from drawing I’ve made the ambitious decision to make my own manga. I was thinking about inking traditionally, and then slapping it into procreate for the screen tones, but this has peaked my interest in continuing the traditional route. Great work!
