Glad you stopped and interjected about your bespoke bats. I was looking to learn best practices to precisely add bat pins for store bought bats, which seem to have industry standard locations of predrilled holes.

Do NOT use hammer action when drilling metal or wood. Its not necessary, the drill bits are not designed for it and you stand a very good chance of snapping the drill bit with possible damage to the surface of your wheel or yourself!

I know people have pointed out don't use the hammer mode on the drill but it didn't sound like you were using a hammer mode(hammer is much louder) and when pausing the video it looks like the drill doesn't have a hammer mode and is just on drill mode unless im being blind :p Normal drill mode at full speed and not too much force is the way to go with metal from what I know. Awesome video though. I have a varient of the same wheel and might attempt this. Im suprised that all wheels dont come with these built in.

Ohh sorry I haven’t edited it yet. Basically all you need to do is cut out circles of Masonite and add holes in the right spots for the bat pins. Super easy.

Thank you. But I wonder why you'd need to use a wing-nut. I think you only need to drop the screw down, which would hold it just fine because of the 90-degree torque motion of the wheel. Any thoughts? Cheers from Japan.

So that when you take the bat off, the screws stay there and don’t come with the bat. I’ve generally got clay covered hands and just want to lift it off and set it down easily.

What kind of drill bit did you use? Just something for metal?

  • @NicoleHerrickDIY

Yes it was a regular metal drill bit, nothing specialised as the aluminium is quite soft.

Hi we are just adding the pins to ours! Did you coat your Masonite with anything and did you have any troubles centreing using the diy bats?

Oh cool. No I didn’t coat the Masonite bats, they surprisingly stay waterproof. I thought they would puff up. No trouble centring, you could add some rings with a sharpie maybe if you need some visual circles.

Hi sorry I never got a chance to edit the video. I made them from Masonite which you buy at the hardware store. It is waterproof. Just cut with a jigsaw and drill holes to match your pins.

Ohh it wasn’t, I’m so sorry. Basically I just cut out circles of Masonite with a jigsaw and used a template to mark where I needed to drill the holes for the pins. Masonite is used for bats as it doesn’t absorb any water and is super smooth on top. I also made some that have an inner cut out for mugs etc. Hope that helps.

Please avoid the hammer function on a drill when drilling into metal. to avoid over heating a small ring of wet clay [1" diameter] around the hole site, filled with a little water, will avoid over heating if your wheel head is very thick. Obviosly the correct drill bit helps as well. i.e. not wood or masonry bits.

Good point. My wheel head is aluminium so like butter to drill through so I wasn’t worried about overheating but if people have steel wheel heads then that’s definitely the way to go. Thank you. Yes I used a drill bit for metal.
