    Lajos Egri once opined that all the meaning of a drama is contained in the premise. I think that adds additional context to why some people struggle with loglines. In one sentence, you're making a thesis that has to last 90 minutes or more.

    i disagree that Reservoir Dogs is "simpl[y] criminals vs authorities." I think it's Loyalty vs Betrayal. The cops only figure in the background of the story Even though Mr.-- is a cop, it's more important that he's a rat, pretending to be the others' friend while actually betraying them. Mr. Pink stays true to the code, and thus survives at least to the end, maybe even escaping. Mr. Blonde is a psycho, as perhaps are Eddie and Joe, but they stay true to the others and would not rat on them. The logline you wrote would still work, as it indicates the conflict I described.

    Thanks for the insightful video, Tyler. Very clear and straight to the point, as always. I disagree with your Fight Club logline though, because I think the inciting incident, goal and stakes are incorrect. Meeting Tyler (inciting incident) sets the protagonist on his story path, in which he tries to escape his dreary, enslaved existence by starting/running an underground fight club (goal). But the club turns into a terrorist movement which threatens to destroy society (stakes). So imo a better logline would be: “After an emasculated office drone meets a charismatic anarchist and starts an underground fight club with him to reclaim his individual freedom, he must prevent the destruction of society when that project turns into a full-scale revolution”.

    Tyler thanks so much for all your videos! Quick question, I'm struggling writing my logline, specifically with the Goal and with the Stakes. I'm getting a bit confused about whether or not and on how to write the moral conflict. For example, for each stake and/or goal I can also identify a moral issue getting involved. In these cases what do you recommend?

What would that look like? Assume we're doing Game of Thrones and you're creating a pitch document. Would such a definitive log line be realistic or possible?

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 *📝 Writing a logline follows a simple formula comprising four key elements: main character, inciting incident, goal, and stakes.* 02:43 *🔍 Loglines should clearly depict two contrasting sides of conflict, such as philosophical conflicts or opposing worldviews.* 05:45 *🎯 The main character's goal in a logline must be specific, achievable, and directly related to resolving the problem introduced by the inciting incident.* 07:48 *💥 Stakes in a logline illustrate what's at risk for the main character if they fail to achieve their goal, providing urgency and tension to the story.* 09:11 *❌ Common mistakes in loglines include vagueness, adding excessive information, and failing to clearly connect the four key elements.* 13:04 *🔄 Rewriting loglines involves ensuring specificity, clarity, and coherence among the main character, inciting incident, goal, and stakes.* 17:41 *💡 Remember the four key elements: main character, inciting incident, goal, and stakes, and ensure they are well-defined and connected to create a compelling logline.* Made with HARPA AI

    I went through your list of loglines. I have one question: in Lion King, don't you think the *Inciting Incident* happens too late in the film? -- it's almost the Midpoint. I had a thought the Inciting Incident here is When Simba is born (in Scar's perspective), he threatens his throne as the future king. So Scar is set out to plot and kill Mufasa/Simba. Then after Mufasa is killed & Simba ran away (Midpoint), The Logline perspective returns from Scar to Simba to continue his quest as the future king who wants to take his reclaim his kingdom and saves it from inevitable doom. I know it doesn't follow the normal logline formatting, but can exceptions like that be made, if you have a strong selling story? Thank you,

Thoughts?

  • @sacha7958

    @sacha7958

    I obviously don’t know the story so can’t really give a better log line. But I would say that the goal “must overcome” is much too vague. And I also can’t really find any philosophical conflict reflected in your log line. It did make me think of the episode Total Rickall from Rick and Morty. And for that episode I would give something like the following log line: When the Smith family discover a fake memory implanting parasite, they must find all their imposter friends and family members, before they can no longer differentiate between parasite and family.
